Unlisted videos are hidden from ordinary discovery but viewable by anyone with the link; private videos are limited to the owner and people the owner invites. Choose unlisted for easy link-sharing, and private when access should be restricted to named viewers. Neither setting makes a video public in YouTube search or the channel’s Videos tab under normal circumstances.
Unlisted vs. private at a glance
| Question | Unlisted | Private |
|---|---|---|
| Who can watch? | Anyone who has the link. | The owner and viewers the owner invites. |
| Can a viewer pass access along? | Yes. Anyone with the link can reshare it. | No URL-based sharing; access is granted to chosen viewers. |
| Does the viewer need a Google Account? | No. | Yes. The viewer must sign in to the account that received access. |
| Appears in search or the channel’s Videos tab? | Normally no; it may appear in search if added to a public playlist. It does not appear in the channel’s Videos tab. | No. |
| Can viewers comment? | Yes. Anyone with the link can see comments. | No. |
These distinctions are described in YouTube’s privacy-settings comparison and its comment guidance.
Choose based on how you want to share
Use unlisted for convenient link-sharing
Unlisted works when you want to send a video to a group without inviting each person individually. Recipients do not need a Google Account, but the link is not an access control: anyone who receives it can pass it on. Do not use unlisted for sensitive material or when you need to know exactly who can watch.
Use private for named viewers
Private is the better fit when viewing should be limited to specific people. Invite those viewers through YouTube’s sharing controls; they need to watch while signed in to the Google or YouTube account that received the invitation. If they use a different account, the video may not be available to them.

Use public for general discovery
If your aim is to reach the general public, choose public rather than either restricted setting. Public videos can appear in YouTube search, recommendations, channel listings, and subscriber feeds, as explained in YouTube’s comparison.
How visibility and discoverability work
“Not listed” does not mean “secret.” An unlisted video is absent from ordinary search results and the channel’s Videos tab, but its link grants access. YouTube also notes that an unlisted video can become discoverable if someone adds it to a public playlist. Private videos are also absent from search and the Videos tab, but a link alone does not grant access; the viewer must be invited and use the invited account. See YouTube Help and its explanation of older unlisted content.

Comments and education playback
Unlisted videos can have comments, and anyone who can access the video through its link can see them. Private videos do not support comments. For Google Workspace for Education workflows, note that YouTube says private videos do not play in services such as Classroom; YouTube describes unlisted as an accessible, non-searchable option for that situation. Check the intended account and playback service before sharing with a class. Details are in YouTube’s comment guidance and privacy settings help.
Change a video’s privacy setting
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Find the video, then select its current setting in the Visibility column.
- Choose Public, Unlisted, or Private. For a private video, add the invited viewers using their email addresses and make sure they use the invited accounts.
- Save the change. If you chose unlisted, share the link only with people you are comfortable allowing to reshare it.
YouTube’s step-by-step instructions are on its change video privacy settings page.

Check older unlisted uploads
YouTube changed the status of unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017, starting July 23, 2021, unless their owners opted out. If you are troubleshooting an old link, verify the video’s current visibility in YouTube Studio instead of assuming the original link still behaves as expected. YouTube’s older unlisted content guidance explains the historical change and notes that legacy links kept unlisted do not receive the security update introduced in 2017.
What privacy settings do—and do not—promise
Private restricts viewer access; it does not prevent YouTube from reviewing a video. YouTube says its systems and human reviewers may review private videos for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention. Treat privacy settings as controls over who can watch, not as a guarantee that the platform cannot examine the content. See YouTube Help.
