Yes—compatible USB headsets work with PS5. A wired USB audio headset plugs directly into the console, while a wireless model normally needs its dedicated USB receiver. A USB-C charging cable, Bluetooth-only headset, or PC-only USB sound card is not automatically a PS5 audio connection. After plugging in, select the headset for output and microphone input in Settings > Sound. Sony says compatible USB and analog headsets are supported, while ordinary third-party Bluetooth headsets are not supported as a normal direct PS5 audio device. Identify what kind of headset you have
“USB headset” describes several different designs. Check the manual, connector labels and included accessories before troubleshooting.

A headset can have a USB-C socket for charging while requiring a separate wireless dongle for gaming. Conversely, a USB connector that works on a PC may rely on software or drivers unavailable on PS5. Check the manufacturer’s PlayStation compatibility list before buying or returning hardware.
Choose the right PS5 USB port
Port layouts vary by PS5 model. Earlier CFI-1000 consoles have front USB-A and USB-C ports plus a rear USB-A port. CFI-2000, CFI-2100 and CFI-7000 model groups use front USB-C ports and a rear USB-A port. Sony’s current model and port information is at playstation.com/support/hardware/ps5.

Use the connector supplied by the headset maker. If a USB-C receiver includes a USB-A adapter, either connection may be supported according to that manufacturer’s instructions. Connect a receiver directly to the console rather than through an unpowered hub; Sony gives the same advice for certain wireless transceivers. Sony’s transceiver guidance explains why hubs and extension chains can prevent detection.
Connect a wired USB headset
- Turn on the PS5.
- Plug the headset directly into a compatible USB-A or USB-C port.
- Wait a few seconds for detection.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Under Output Device, select the headset if it was not selected automatically.
- Set Output to Headphones to All Audio for game, menu and chat sound.
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone (or press the PS button and choose Mic), then select the headset under Input Device.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level and speak. The input meter should respond without reaching the clipping range.
- Use Settings > Sound > Volume to set headphone volume, then check the headset’s own volume wheel.
These labels follow Sony’s current US support documentation checked August 18, 2026; a future system update may rename or rearrange an option.
Connect a wireless USB-dongle headset
- Charge the headset.
- Insert its dedicated PlayStation-compatible receiver directly into the PS5.
- Switch on the headset and wait for the receiver and headset indicators to show a connection.
- If audio does not switch automatically, go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the receiver under Output Device.
- Set Output to Headphones to All Audio.
- In Settings > Sound > Microphone, select the headset as Input Device and test the meter.
- Install firmware with the manufacturer’s Windows or macOS app when required. Do not assume PS5 can perform a third-party firmware update.
Pairing buttons and indicator patterns differ by brand. For Sony PULSE Elite, insert the included PlayStation Link adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port, press the headset’s PlayStation Link button and follow the on-screen instructions. PULSE software updates are under Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update. See Sony’s PULSE Elite setup instructions. The headset searches for about 30 seconds; pressing the PlayStation Link button starts another search if it times out.

Set PS5 output, chat and microphone controls
- Output Device: selects the active headset or receiver.
- Switch Output Device Automatically: controls whether PS5 changes output when a headset is connected or removed. Disable it if the console keeps changing to TV speakers.
- Output to Headphones: choose All Audio for complete sound. A chat-only choice will not send game audio.
- Input Device: selects the microphone the console uses.
- Adjust Microphone Level: set the meter in the recommended range without clipping.
- Volume: controls PS5 headphone volume; also check physical controls on the headset.
Party chat and in-game chat are separate tests. First verify the microphone in a PS5 party, then check the game’s own voice-chat setting, mute state and privacy or parental controls.
Enable PS5 3D Audio
PS5 3D Audio is console processing, not a proprietary “3D headset” connection. A compatible USB headset, USB wireless receiver or DualSense-connected analog headset can receive it. Establish ordinary audio first, then open the PS5’s Settings > Sound 3D Audio controls and follow the on-screen calibration for your listening setup.
Some headsets add their own virtual surround, spatial mode or EQ. Start with PS5 3D Audio and turn off extra surround processing; enabling two spatial systems can create a hollow, bright or unnatural presentation. Compare 3D Audio on and off before deciding the headset is faulty. SteelSeries confirms that compatible Arctis models receive PS5-processed 3D Audio over USB or 3.5 mm (3D Audio explanation).

Supported PlayStation headsets may also show EQ choices such as Standard, Bass Boost, Shooter and custom modes under the PS5 audio menus. Those presets are not universal features of every third-party USB headset. Sony’s current audio controls are documented at PS5 audio output support.
Fix common USB-headset problems
No sound
- Confirm the connector carries audio rather than charging only.
- Try another PS5 USB port and remove hubs, extensions and unapproved adapters.
- Manually select the headset in Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device.
- Set Output to Headphones to All Audio.
- Raise PS5 volume and the headset’s physical volume; check its mute switch.
- Restart the PS5 with the receiver connected.
- Test the headset on a computer or other supported device and check its firmware and PlayStation compatibility.
Microphone not detected
- Turn off the headset’s mute switch and press the DualSense mute button so it is not active.
- Select the headset under Settings > Sound > Microphone > Input Device.
- Insert or extend the boom microphone fully.
- Watch the input meter while speaking and raise the level if necessary.
- Test a PS5 party before testing in-game chat.
- Check whether the device’s USB interface supports microphone input on PS5; some PC interfaces expose output only.
Game audio works but party chat is missing
Use All Audio, center any game/chat balance wheel, verify party members are not muted, and check whether the game is using a separate in-game chat mode.

Low volume or incorrect game/chat balance
Adjust PS5 headphone volume, the headset wheel and any game/chat balance control separately. Return the balance to its center position before diagnosing a software fault.

Receiver is detected but will not pair
- Charge the headset and select its 2.4-GHz/USB mode rather than Bluetooth mode.
- Reinsert the receiver directly into the console.
- Move it away from crowded USB devices, or use the manufacturer’s supplied extension cable.
- Repeat the documented pairing button sequence.
- Update headset and receiver firmware on a compatible computer.
- Confirm you have the PlayStation version of the receiver, not a PC-only variant.
TV speakers keep taking over
Switch Output Device Automatically may be changing outputs as the headset connects, powers down or loses its receiver. Adjust that setting under Settings > Sound > Audio Output. A connected wireless receiver may remain visible even when the headset is switched off, depending on the model.
The PS5 sound is different from PS4 or PC
Compare PS5 3D Audio on and off, then reset headset EQ and virtual-surround modes. Sony’s explanation of PS5 processing differences is available in this SteelSeries support article.
USB DAC or audio box does not work
Do not assume every DAC, mixer or USB sound card is class-compliant on PS5. Sony’s INZONE guidance warns that certain USB Type-C audio boxes are not guaranteed to work with PS5 and directs users to the controller connection instead (INZONE H3/H6 guidance; additional INZONE connection guidance).

Choose USB, wireless or the DualSense jack

If USB detection fails, a CTIA-compatible single-plug headset through the DualSense can be a practical fallback. Headsets with separate PC microphone and headphone plugs need the correct combined connection; do not force incompatible adapters.
When replacement makes sense
Consider replacing or returning the headset only after trying a different PS5 port, a direct connection without a hub, manual output and input selection, firmware updates, and another supported device. If the headset remains output-only, requires unavailable PC software, or is Bluetooth-only, choose a model explicitly listed as PS5-compatible rather than buying another generic USB-C cable.
