The late-2024 timing prediction was right, and the broad claims of stronger graphics, improved ray tracing and AI-assisted upscaling were borne out. The exact leaked figures are a different matter: Sony’s published specifications and performance claims are the reliable reference, and results vary by game.
When did the PS5 Pro release?
Sony announced the PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, and released it on November 7, 2024. That confirms the leak’s central prediction of a late-2024 launch. Sony’s announcement and launch notice establish the dates.

The original US launch price was $699.99. Sony’s announcement also listed launch prices of £699.99 in the UK, €799.99 in Europe and ¥119,980 including tax in Japan. Those are launch prices, not current quotes.
For a dated US comparison, PlayStation Direct listed the PS5 Pro at $899 on August 18, 2026; its same US hardware page listed the PS5 disc model at $649 and the Digital Edition at $599. Prices and availability can change, so treat these as a snapshot rather than a universal or permanent price. See PlayStation Direct’s US PS5 listings.

How did the leak compare with Sony’s final product?
| Leak area | What Sony confirmed | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Late-2024 launch | Announced September 10 and released November 7, 2024. | Correct. |
| More powerful graphics and faster rendering | Sony said the console renders about 45% faster than the standard PS5. | Broadly correct; the 45% figure is Sony’s comparative claim, not a promised gain in every game. |
| Improved ray tracing | Sony described ray-tracing performance as roughly two to three times that of the standard PS5, depending on the workload. | Correct in direction; the benefit varies by title and implementation. |
| AI-assisted upscaling | Sony introduced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). | Correct. |
| 2TB storage | The console has a 2TB custom SSD. | Correct; 2TB is the drive’s stated capacity, not necessarily space available to games after system software. |
| Exact technical figures | Sony documentation lists figures including 16.7 TFLOPS for the GPU and 16GB GDDR6 plus additional 2GB DDR5 memory. | Use Sony’s documentation, not a leak, for confirmed figures. Claims about clocks, bandwidth or other details should not be called official unless Sony documents them. |
| Disc drive in the box | The PS5 Pro is digital-only out of the box; a compatible detachable drive is sold separately. | Not included. |
| Guaranteed 4K at 60 frames per second in every game | Sony describes capabilities for supported titles, not a universal output guarantee. | Overstated. |
The original leak’s exact wording and provenance are not established here, so a precise line-by-line audit of every rumored number would be misleading. The broad prediction was validated; leaked technical estimates should not be retroactively presented as Sony specifications.
What hardware does PS5 Pro have?
Sony’s documentation describes a custom AMD-based system with an eight-core Zen 2 CPU and an AMD Radeon RDNA-based graphics engine. This is an upgraded PS5, not a move to a new Zen CPU generation. The detailed figures below come from Sony’s safety documentation for the CFI-70XX family; they are hardware specifications, not performance guarantees in a particular game.
- Memory: 16GB GDDR6 system memory, plus 2GB DDR5.
- Graphics: 16.7 TFLOPS listed for the GPU.
- Storage: 2TB custom SSD, with an M.2 SSD expansion connector.
- Networking: Wi-Fi 7, with compatibility with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 routers.
- Connections and expansion: HDMI output and a port for the optional detachable disc drive.
- Approximate dimensions: 388 × 89 × 216 mm.
- Maximum rated power: 390W.
These hardware details are listed in Sony’s CFI-70XX safety guide. The 2TB SSD is built in, and additional storage can be added using a compatible M.2 drive.
What do the graphics upgrades mean in practice?
Faster rendering and frame-rate options
Sony’s approximately 45% faster-rendering claim describes a platform capability relative to the standard PS5. In compatible games, developers can use the extra headroom for higher or steadier frame rates, improved image quality, or a mix of features that previously required choosing between a visual-quality mode and a performance mode. The result depends on the game, its patch, selected graphics mode and display; it does not mean every title will run at 4K and 60fps.

Ray tracing simulates the way light interacts with surfaces to produce effects such as reflections and more realistic lighting. Sony’s two-to-three-times comparison refers to ray-tracing performance, not a fixed visual improvement across all games. A developer must use the capability, and the performance and image-quality trade-offs differ by title.
PSSR upscaling
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is Sony’s machine-learning image-reconstruction technology. It can reconstruct a higher-resolution output from an image rendered internally at a lower resolution, helping balance clarity and rendering cost. It has a similar broad purpose to other upscaling systems, including Nvidia DLSS, but it is not the same technology and should not be assumed to produce identical results.
PSSR benefits depend on the game’s implementation. Sony’s current PS5 Pro page also describes an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for supported titles; this later software feature should not be confused with what a pre-launch leak established. Sony’s PS5 Pro page describes the current features and supported-game information.
Which games benefit, and what is compatible?
PS5 Pro can play PS5 games, but enhanced visuals are not identical across the library. Some games receive a specific PS5 Pro enhancement, while Game Boost can improve certain other titles without being the same as a dedicated patch. Sony currently advertises more than 100 PS5 games enhanced for Pro; the list can change as games are updated.
Sony says more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5 Pro, but notes a small number of incompatible titles. Check a specific game’s status rather than assuming every PS4 disc or download will work. Sony’s compatibility information covers software and accessories.

What is not included with PS5 Pro?
Disc drive
The console is sold without a disc drive. Sony’s compatible detachable drive supports PS5 games, a large selection of supported PS4 discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs. An internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Check the drive listing for compatibility before buying: Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro.
Vertical stand
Horizontal stand feet are included, but the vertical stand is sold separately. The PS5 Pro is compatible with Sony’s newer stand, not the original PS5 base. See Sony’s vertical stand listing and PS5 setup guidance.
In-box contents
Sony’s US product listing names the PS5 Pro console, DualSense wireless controller, horizontal stand feet, HDMI cable, AC power cord, user manual and pre-installed Astro’s Playroom. The console includes a 2TB SSD; a disc drive and vertical stand are not listed as included. Check the product listing for the current package details.

Existing PS5 owners with a capable 4K display
The upgrade is easiest to justify if you notice image-quality or frame-rate compromises, regularly play titles with Pro enhancements, and have a 4K television capable of showing the difference. A high-end display can make the extra rendering and ray-tracing options more useful, but it cannot make an unsupported game gain a dedicated Pro mode.
New console buyers
If having Sony’s most capable console and 2TB of built-in storage matters more than price, Pro is the higher-performance option. Compare the current price with the standard PS5 models and account for any disc drive you need before deciding; the Pro’s launch MSRP and later US listing price are not interchangeable.
Physical-game collectors
Include the cost and setup of the separately sold compatible disc drive in your decision. The US disc-drive price is not stated in the cited listing snapshot, so check the live listing rather than relying on an old price. If you do not want to buy an add-on, choose a console that includes a drive.
Budget-conscious players or 1080p-display owners
A standard PS5 is likely the more practical fit if low cost is the priority, your display cannot show much of the visual upgrade, or the games you play do not have Pro-specific enhancements. The Pro’s advantages are capabilities to use, not improvements every player or game receives automatically.

Verdict: the timing was right, but the buying decision is now about value
The 2024 leak was right about a late-year launch and broadly anticipated a stronger graphics system, better ray tracing and AI-assisted upscaling. Sony confirmed those directions when it announced PS5 Pro, then released it on November 7, 2024. For anyone considering one now, the important variables are the current local price, whether their games benefit, the display they use and whether they need to add a disc drive.
