Remnant: From the Ashes has no single, confirmed character level cap. The one firm ceiling in the available sources is for individual traits: each trait tops out at rank 20. Gear power and Survival Mode progress on separate tracks, and the game-wide total of trait levels is a figure the sources disagree on, so it should not be quoted as settled.
The confirmed cap: rank 20 for each trait
The Remnant: From the Ashes Wiki’s Traits page, a community-edited reference, states that each trait has a maximum level of 20. Traits are passive abilities that improve your character, and most have to be discovered through play rather than bought. The wiki page is not dated, so treat the 20-rank figure as the best-documented value available rather than a statement tied to a specific patch.

The 20 figure is a per-trait rank ceiling. It is not a limit on your gear power, your Survival Mode level, or your character overall.
Why “max level” has no single answer
Players use “level” to describe four different things. Each one runs on its own scale, so their numbers should not be compared directly.
#1 Best Overall
| Progression system | What increases | How it is earned | Where it applies | Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Individual traits | The passive effect of each trait | Trait points from leveling and Tomes of Knowledge; traits found through play | Campaign and Adventure | Rank 20 per trait (Traits page, Remnant Wiki) |
| Equipment power (gear score) | A weighted average of your equipment’s upgrade levels | Upgrading equipment | Enemy scaling | Not stated in the available sources |
| Survival Mode levels | Maximum health, stamina, and damage | Level-ups within a Survival run | Survival Mode only | Not stated in the available sources |
| Aggregate trait total | The combined ranks across all traits | Trait points | Campaign and Adventure | Conflicting figures (880 and 800); see below |
How trait points come in
The Traits page lists two ways to gain trait points:
- Leveling: trait points are awarded as your character levels up in Campaign and Adventure.
- Tomes of Knowledge: these items also award trait points.
Because most traits must be discovered in play, the number of traits you can rank up depends on what you have found, not only on how many points you have.
Rank #2

- Explore dynamically-generated worlds that change each time you play through them, creating new maps, enemy encounters, quest opportunities, and in-world events
- Overcome tough-as-nails enemies and epic bosses throughout hostile environments to earn experience, valuable loot and upgrade materials you can use to build a wicked arsenal of weapons, armor, and modifications
- Invading other worlds to seek an end to the root is dangerous and survival is Far from guaranteed. Team up with up to two other players to Increase your chances of survival
The overall trait total is unresolved
The same Traits page gives two different aggregate figures. One statement says the current maximum total trait level is 880. A later statement says players keep gaining points up to a maximum trait level of 800. The page does not explain which is current, and it may contain stale or inconsistently edited text.
Until a current in-game value or developer statement confirms one number, do not treat either figure as the game’s overall cap. The rank 20 limit on individual traits is the figure you can rely on.

Gear power and enemy scaling
Gear power, also called gear score, is a weighted average of your equipment’s upgrade levels. The independent Two Against the Root reference tables describe it this way and state that enemies scale to this gear measure rather than to your character level. In practical terms, the reference implies that raising your gear power, not your character level, is what changes how strong enemies are.
The available sources do not give a maximum gear power value.

Survival Mode progression
Survival Mode runs on its own level system. According to the Survival Mode page on the community-edited Remnant Wiki, each Survival level-up raises maximum health, stamina, and damage. Those level-ups do not award the trait points used in Campaign and Adventure. Survival levels, therefore, should not be counted toward your trait totals, and Survival numbers should not be read as a Campaign or Adventure cap.
Patch history: the Elder Knowledge change
The official Swamps of Corsus update notes, published by Gunfire Games and Perfect World Entertainment via Steam in April 2020, reduced the Elder Knowledge experience bonus to a maximum of 20%, down from 40%. The update became available on April 28, 2020.

It describes one past limit on a single bonus. The available sources do not show whether that limit changed in later updates, so it should not be used as evidence of the current overall trait cap.
Quick Recap
How to check the current figure yourself
- Read the latest official patch notes for Remnant: From the Ashes on Steam for any change to traits, leveling, or trait points made after April 2020.
- Check the rank shown for a trait in your in-game trait screen. If it stops at 20, that confirms the per-trait ceiling in your version of the game.
- Treat community wiki totals as unverified until they match the developer’s notes or values you can see in the game.
