The original PlayStation and PSone output analog video through their AV Multi Out; they do not produce native HDMI or YPbPr component video. The port can carry composite, S-Video, RGB and stereo audio, so the right cable depends on both your console and your display. A plug that fits is not necessarily electrically correct—especially when PS1, PS2 and PS3 cables look alike.
Identify your console first
Check the SCPH model number on the underside or rear label before buying a specialized cable. This guide covers the original large PlayStation and the PSone slim, in NTSC-U/C, NTSC-J and PAL versions, whether unmodified or fitted with a video modification.
The Japanese SCPH-1000 launch model is unusual because it has dedicated composite RCA and S-Video sockets. Later Japanese models removed some of those connectors, and most later revisions rely on AV Multi Out. A dedicated socket and a Multi Out cable are not interchangeable assumptions.
Power is separate from video. Large PlayStation models use an AC input arrangement, while the PSone uses an external DC supply. Confirm voltage, polarity and connector against the model rather than substituting an adapter because it looks similar. See the pinout reference at ConsoleMods.

What the PS1 actually outputs
The unmodified console’s native analog choices are:
- Composite video: the most compatible and softest option.
- S-Video: separate luminance and chroma for a cleaner picture.
- RGB: separate red, green and blue channels and generally the highest-quality native analog output.
- Stereo audio: left and right analog channels.
There is no native HDMI and no native YPbPr component mode. A component product must actively convert RGB to YPbPr, while an HDMI product must convert and usually scale the analog signal. The HDMI connector itself does not improve an image.
Most PS1 games use 240p, with some 480i modes and games that change resolution. The technical notes document 256-, 320-, 384-, 512- and 640-pixel horizontal modes, in both progressive 240-line and interlaced 480-line timings: PS1 Video Output Notes. A CRT often locks to these signals naturally; a modern television, inexpensive converter or capture card may reject them or interpret 240p as 480i.
AV Multi Out pinout
The following numbering is viewed from the front of the console’s AV port. Online diagrams sometimes reverse audio channels or viewing direction, so verify the orientation before wiring anything.
| Pin | Signal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Ground |
| 2 | Left audio |
| 3 | Ground |
| 4 | Right audio |
| 5 | Luma |
| 6 | Composite video |
| 7 | Chroma |
| 8 | Ground |
| 9 | Blue/RGB or a related switchable signal on later systems |
| 10 | +5 V output |
| 11 | Red/RGB or a related switchable signal on later systems |
| 12 | Green/RGB or a related switchable signal on later systems |
On PS1, the relevant pins carry RGB. PS2 and PS3 can repurpose some Multi Out pins for YPbPr depending on system mode; that does not give the PS1 a user-selectable component output. The shared-family reference is PlayStation Series AV Multi Out.

PS1 cable types explained
Composite RCA
The familiar yellow/red/white lead uses yellow for composite video, white for left audio and red for right audio. Composite combines luminance, chrominance, sync and color into one signal, so it is widely supported but prone to color bleeding, dot crawl and softness. Cable colors follow Sony’s practical convention, but color alone does not prove correct internal wiring; see Sony’s connection guidance.
A basic cable needs video, stereo audio and grounds. Some cables also route the console’s +5 V line for automatic input switching; omitting that line can still work if the display is selected manually.
S-Video
S-Video separates Y (luma plus sync) from C (chroma), normally producing cleaner color edges than composite. Use a direct S-Video lead or a breakout that provides S-Video plus red/white audio. It is a strong choice for an S-Video CRT when RGB equipment is unavailable. It is not component video, and dedicated S-Video sockets exist only on certain early models; later consoles use an AV Multi Out cable. References: PS1 Video Cables and PS1 Video Output Notes.

RGB sends red, green and blue separately and generally preserves more of the original signal than composite or S-Video. A PS1 RGB lead is not necessarily a wire-for-wire product: capacitors, 75-ohm termination, shielding and sync handling may be inside the plug or cable.
EuroSCART versus JP-21
EuroSCART and Japanese JP-21 use similar-looking 21-pin connectors with different assignments. Never plug an unknown JP-21 cable into EuroSCART equipment. Buy for the exact pinout used by the display or scaler.

Sync choices
PS1 RGB cables may use composite video as sync, luma (sync-on-luma), or a sync-stripper circuit that produces cleaner composite sync. A cable can work on one scaler and fail on another if the destination expects a different sync type. Professional equipment may demand clean sync, while many consumer scalers accept properly designed composite-video-sync or sync-on-luma. Details and modification options are covered at PS1 CSYNC Output Mod.
Bad conditioning can produce a dark or excessively bright image, wrong colors, no lock or audio buzz. Replacing an unsuitable cable with a PS1-specific design is safer than adding random inline components.

RGB-to-component
The PS1 outputs RGB, not YPbPr. Products such as PlayStation-compatible HD Retrovision solutions use active electronics to transcode RGB to component: HD Retrovision FAQ. They are not passive cables that simply connect red, green and blue pins to red, green and blue RCA plugs. Connect the product’s labeled Y, Pb and Pr outputs exactly as specified, provide separate audio, and confirm that the display accepts 240p/480i over component.
HD15/VGA-style adapters
An HD15 dongle is an adapter, not an upscaler. RetroTINK’s PS1 HD15 dongle carries analog RGB and stereo audio to a compatible scaler, with sync on HD15 pin 13; it is not a universal direct VGA-monitor solution: official product page. The page also warns that some HDMI-modded consoles may not provide enough current on the AV Out 5 V pin, causing sync drops, and that the PS1 version is not intended for PS2 or PS3.
RGB-to-HDMI cables and generic adapters
Active RGB-to-HDMI products, including RAD2X-style designs, offer a compact path and commonly scale to 480p. They are simpler than a separate scaler but provide less configuration flexibility. Generic AV Multi Out-to-HDMI boxes vary substantially: possible failures include incorrect 240p processing, lag, poor deinterlacing, washed-out levels, overscan and loss of sync during resolution changes. Do not treat an advertised “720p HDMI” label as proof of PS1 compatibility.

Choose by display and goal
| Priority or display | Recommended path | Advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest cost CRT | Composite RCA | Broad compatibility | Softest image |
| S-Video CRT | Proper S-Video lead | Cleaner color separation | Requires S-Video input |
| RGB CRT/PVM or scaler | Correct EuroSCART or JP-21 RGB cable | Best native analog quality | Pinout and sync must match |
| Component-centered setup | Active RGB-to-YPbPr solution | Uses common component inputs | Product-specific and not passive |
| Simple modern TV | Active RGB-to-HDMI cable | Few boxes | Limited scaling controls |
| Multi-console enthusiast | RGB cable plus dedicated retro scaler | Best timing and configuration flexibility | Higher cost and more equipment |
| GunCon gaming | Composite-capable CRT setup | Preserves original light-gun behavior | Not suitable for ordinary LCD/OLED use |
| Direct digital installation | Internal HDMI modification | Clean modern integration | Requires console modification |
A modern TV may accept direct composite but upscale poorly or fail to lock onto 240p. For the best chance of stable results, use a scaler designed for retro 240p/480i signals rather than a generic AV-to-HDMI box.

Connecting common setups
Composite
- Turn off the console and display.
- Insert the Multi Out plug.
- Connect yellow to a composite video input, white to left audio and red to right audio.
- Select the television’s composite/AV input and start the console.
If there is no picture, ensure yellow is not in a component jack, try another input and a known-good game/cable, verify that the TV still supports analog composite, and try S-Video or a scaler.
S-Video
- Connect the Multi Out end to the PS1.
- Connect S-Video to the display or scaler.
- Connect red and white audio separately.
- Select S-Video.
A black-and-white result points to incorrect wiring, a missing chroma connection, NTSC/PAL incompatibility or an input interpreting the format incorrectly. Do not use an unverified passive adapter on a composite-only input.
RGB SCART
- Identify EuroSCART or JP-21 at the destination.
- Buy a cable made for that exact pinout and specifically for PS1 RGB.
- Connect to an RGB-capable input or scaler.
- Select RGB/SCART mode when required.
- If sync is absent, try a correctly designed sync-on-luma or conditioned-sync cable.
RGB-to-component
- Use a PS1-compatible active RGB-to-YPbPr product.
- Attach any required console-specific adapter.
- Follow the product’s Y/Pb/Pr labels rather than assuming RCA colors represent RGB.
- Connect audio separately and verify 240p/480i support.
GunCon and light-gun requirements
Picture quality and light-gun compatibility are separate goals. Original GunCon devices depend on CRT timing and display behavior; a working RGB-to-HDMI chain does not make a light gun work on an LCD or OLED. GunCon setups normally need a compatible CRT and composite video. Some RGB leads include a composite breakout for this purpose. HD Retrovision discusses PlayStation GunCon testing in its FAQ, but component output alone does not make modern flat panels compatible.
Why PS2 and PS3 cables cause confusion
The physical AV Multi Out family is shared, but signal behavior differs. A PS2/PS3 component cable is not automatically a PS1 component cable, and a PS2/PS3 RGB lead may assume different conditioning. PS2 and PS3 can switch certain pins between RGB and YPbPr; the PS1 should not be described as having that selectable component mode. Physical fit proves only mechanical compatibility, not correct wiring. See PS2 Video Cables and HD Retrovision troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting by symptom
No picture
- Recheck the signal type and connector standard.
- Confirm the scaler input mode.
- Test whether the display supports 240p.
- Try a known-good game and cable.
- Consider incompatible sync, a PS2/PS3-designed lead, or a damaged Multi Out socket.
Picture is black and white
Check NTSC/PAL compatibility, S-Video chroma wiring, and whether the display is set to the same input format. A monochrome image does not by itself prove a failed console.
RGB is too dark, too bright or the colors are wrong
Suspect missing or incorrect capacitors, termination, cable shielding, an input-level mismatch or a cable designed for another PlayStation generation. Use a known PS1-specific cable instead of experimenting with random components.
Menu works, gameplay disappears
The game may switch between 480i and 240p. Some displays and capture devices lose lock during that transition. Test both menu and gameplay and use equipment documented for resolution changes. The timing behavior is summarized at ConsoleMods.
Professional switcher reports no sync
The equipment may require clean composite sync rather than composite video or luma. Use suitable sync conditioning, a cable designed for that input, or a documented console modification.

Test the console directly into the display, then add the scaler, switcher and capture device one at a time. Poor shielding, ground-loop interaction, incorrectly wired audio grounds and long unshielded runs are common causes.
Light gun fails
Verify the CRT requirement and preserve the required composite connection. HDMI output alone cannot substitute for the original CRT operating principle.
