This is an Epic-approved community effort, not an official Epic Games release. OldUnreal says it reached an agreement with Epic Games in 2025. Its patch repository clarifies: “This project was approved by Epic Games, but it is not an official Epic project, nor has it been reviewed or tested by Epic.”
What does the new patch change?
OldUnreal’s patch aims to keep UT2004 usable on current systems while repairing and updating the game. Its project materials list stability, security and performance fixes; quality-of-life improvements; modern platform support; a new SDL backend for Linux and macOS; a renderer; and modern build systems. The release author named on the OldUnreal GitHub release, Stijn-volckaert, wrote: “Please note that this is the first public patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 in over 20 years.” That is the project’s description of the time since an earlier public patch, rather than a separately established historical statistic.
How to install UT2004 or patch an existing copy
Use the installer for a new installation
- Open the OldUnreal UT2004 installer page.
- For Windows, download and run the installer. OldUnreal says its Windows installer supports Windows 7 and later; it fetches the ECE disc image, installs the game and applies the latest patch.
- For Linux or macOS, follow the GitHub instructions linked from OldUnreal’s installer page. The project lists Linux and macOS builds for x86_64/amd64, arm64/aarch64 and powerpc64le.
Patch a copy you already have
Manual patching has more prerequisites than the installer route. OldUnreal says the game client must be version 3369 and the Epic ECE Bonus Pack must be installed first. Back up the game folder before applying a patch. The repository provides platform-specific packages: a Windows ZIP, a Linux tarball and a macOS application bundle. Linux upgrades from older installations have additional file-removal and case-sensitivity cautions, so follow the repository’s platform-specific instructions rather than copying files blindly.

Should you install a stable release or a preview?
OldUnreal recommends stable releases for regular play, including online play. Previews are aimed at testers and modders and may have limitations, including problems playing online. The project specifically identifies AntiTCC incompatibility for the preview discussed in its release materials. Before choosing a preview, read the notes for that exact build; compatibility can vary by release and server.
Does UT2004 work on Windows 11, Linux or Mac?
OldUnreal’s Windows installer supports Windows 7 and later, which includes Windows 11 by that stated minimum, but the project’s approval should not be mistaken for Epic testing the patch on Windows 11. Linux and macOS users are directed to GitHub rather than the Windows installer.
The 3374 release notes list Linux and macOS support for x86_64/amd64, arm64/aarch64 and powerpc64le. The repository says the patch drops 32-bit CPU support, Windows Vista and earlier, and DirectX 8 support. Consult the release notes for the specific build and platform before upgrading.

Can you still play UT2004 online?
Online compatibility is not guaranteed across every build and server. OldUnreal warns that previews may not work online, and its FAQ describes connection problems with some older servers. In some cases, the FAQ says players may need to reinstall official 3369.3 files. Check the current release notes and OldUnreal’s server guidance for the build you are using, particularly if a server rejects a patched client.
Is the OldUnreal patch official?
No. It is a community-run project approved by Epic, but OldUnreal explicitly says it is not an official Epic project and has not been reviewed or tested by Epic. OldUnreal also says it is doing the work for free: “No. We’re doing this for free because we’re fans of the game and we like a challenge.”
