Start by backing up %APPDATA%Until Then, then verify the Steam installation. The most relevant causes of Until Then crashes on Windows are incompatible old configuration or save data, demo-to-full-release migration problems, an underpowered or incorrectly selected GPU, outdated drivers, overlays, and damaged game files.
Use the fixes below in order. The first steps are reversible; do not delete your save or download random DLL files before protecting your progress.

Identify the crash first
| Symptom | Start with these checks |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens after clicking Play | Requirements, Windows and GPU drivers, Steam files, and overlays |
| The game crashes immediately | Old %APPDATA%Until Then data, corrupted files, drivers, and runtime components |
| It crashes after several minutes or during a scene | GPU compatibility, graphics settings, heat or power, and overlays |
| It crashes at the same chapter transition | Verify files, reset backed-up configuration or save data, and test with low settings |
| It crashes after importing a demo save | Update the game, back up the data, and test with a clean AppData folder |
| Windows restarts, shuts down, or shows a blue screen | Investigate Windows, the graphics driver, temperatures, power, and hardware—not just the game installation |
A desktop crash usually points to the game, its data, or software around it. A complete system failure is a different category of problem.
Before fixing anything: back up your progress
Close Until Then and make a copy of this folder:
%APPDATA%Until Then
Press Windows + R, enter the path, and press Enter. Copy the entire Until Then folder to your desktop or another safe location. This protects local saves and settings before you reset anything.

Steam Cloud is useful, but it is not a substitute for a manual backup. Cloud synchronization can also restore older or problematic data after you remove it locally. If a clean-folder test works but the crash returns when Steam Cloud restores data, temporarily review Until Then’s Steam Cloud setting and test again. Re-enable synchronization only after deciding which local save or configuration you want to keep.
Check the PC against the real requirements
Steam lists Until Then as a 64-bit Windows game with these requirements:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core i5-4460 or AMD FX-8320 | Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti or AMD Radeon R7 260 | NVIDIA GTX 1650 or AMD Radeon RX 570 |
| Storage | 3 GB | 3 GB |
| System | 64-bit processor and operating system; Steam lists Windows 7 or later | 64-bit processor and operating system; Steam lists Windows 7 or later |
See the official Steam listing for the current requirements. Steam still displays Windows 7 for the game, but the Steam Client itself requires Windows 10 or later, so Windows 10 or Windows 11 is the practical environment to troubleshoot.

Meeting the minimum CPU requirement does not mean the graphics hardware is sufficient. A developer response specifically cautions that some Intel integrated GPUs are below the game’s minimum GPU requirement. Lower settings may help, but compatibility below minimum specifications is not guaranteed.
To identify your hardware:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - Check the System tab for Windows, processor, and memory details.
- Check the Display tabs for the GPU and driver.
- Compare the GPU itself—not just the processor—with Steam’s requirements.
1. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Use this when: the crash began after a Windows or driver change, the game will not launch, or your driver is substantially out of date.
Install pending Windows updates, restart the computer, and install the current stable driver for your graphics hardware from the manufacturer:
- NVIDIA drivers or the NVIDIA App
- AMD Drivers and Support
- Intel Driver & Support Assistant, or the laptop manufacturer’s validated driver
Laptop owners should consider the manufacturer’s driver when a generic vendor driver causes display or power-management problems. Restart after installation and test Until Then before changing several other variables.

Treat that as a diagnostic step, not a universal fix. Do not assume a particular driver version fixes Until Then unless the developer has documented it.

2. Verify the Steam files
Use this when: the game fails to launch, crashes after an update, or repeatedly fails at a scene transition.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Until Then and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then restart Steam and launch the game.
Steam’s file-verification guidance describes this as a way to replace missing or damaged installation files. It should not delete your saves, which are normally stored outside the Steam installation, but keep the AppData backup anyway.
Verification will not necessarily repair a corrupted save, stale configuration, graphics driver, or overlay conflict. If Steam reports that files were replaced and the same crash remains, continue to the AppData and graphics steps.

3. Reset the old %APPDATA%Until Then folder
Use this when: the game crashes immediately, began crashing after an update, or was previously installed as a demo or an earlier build.
A developer or publisher community response specifically recommended removing old data in %APPDATA%Until Then when it was incompatible with release builds. Do this safely by renaming the folder rather than permanently deleting it:
- Close Until Then.
- Exit Steam completely, or confirm that the game is no longer running.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%APPDATA%Until Thenand press Enter. - Copy the folder to a separate backup location.
- Rename the original folder to
Until Then_backup. - Launch the game and test it with a clean folder.
This may reset settings and can affect local saves. If the game now works, do not copy the entire backup back at once. Restore files selectively, testing after each change. If the crash returns, the last restored data is a strong suspect.
To undo the test, close the game, remove the newly created folder, and rename Until Then_backup back to Until Then. If Steam Cloud restores the problem immediately, review synchronization settings before repeating the clean-folder test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Treat demo-save migration as a special case
Use this when: you played the demo and the crash began after moving to the full release or importing its save.

Patch notes document a Windows crash related to migrating demo save data and record a fix in an update. That does not guarantee that every old demo save is compatible with every later build.
- Let Steam download all available updates for Until Then.
- Verify the game files using the Installed Files steps above.
- Back up
%APPDATA%Until Then. - Rename the existing folder to
Until Then_backup. - Launch the full release with a clean configuration.
- If it works, restore only the necessary save data and retest.
If restoring the old data brings the crash back, leave the clean data in place and contact support rather than repeatedly overwriting it. The documented migration fix is evidence of a specific problem, not a promise that every damaged or incompatible demo save can be recovered.
5. Make Windows use the correct GPU and lower settings
Use this when: you are on a laptop, the system has both integrated and dedicated graphics, or the game reaches its menu but crashes in scenes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On Windows 11, set the game to use the high-performance adapter:
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Display.
- Select Graphics.
- Add Until Then if it is not listed.
- Select the game executable and choose Options.
- Select High performance, choose Save, and relaunch.
Connect the laptop to AC power and use a performance-oriented Windows power mode while testing. NVIDIA and AMD control panels also provide per-game GPU settings, although their labels and layouts can change.
This only prevents Windows from choosing the weaker adapter. It does not make an integrated GPU that is below the GTX 750 Ti/Radeon R7 260 class meet the requirement.
If the game reaches the menu, set graphics quality to Low, choose a lower resolution or windowed mode, and disable optional visual effects where available. Restart the game and test the exact scene that previously crashed. The developer has indicated that lower-end and integrated-graphics systems may need additional graphics controls, but lower settings are a possible workaround—not a guaranteed fix below minimum specifications.
6. Disable overlays and conflicting background software
Use this when: the game launches but crashes during scenes, recording, alt-tabbing, or an overlay notification.

For one clean test, temporarily disable:
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA or AMD overlays
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner overlays
- Screen-recording software
- RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities
- Aggressive antivirus or security monitoring features
Disable one group at a time where possible. That makes it easier to identify the conflict and restore software you need. Do not permanently turn off antivirus protection. If security software appears responsible, use its normal settings to add a narrowly scoped game-folder exclusion only after considering the security trade-off.
Steam’s crash troubleshooting guidance also recommends disabling non-essential software and checking system requirements.
7. Repair Windows gaming components
Use this when: an error mentions a missing DLL, DirectX, Visual C++, audio, or another Windows component.

- Install or repair the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages from Microsoft.
- Install DirectX components only from Microsoft or from the game’s own trusted redistributable folder.
Do not download individual DLL files from unofficial “DLL download” websites. A missing runtime component can indicate an incomplete Windows or game installation; replacing one file from an unknown source can create security and compatibility problems.
These are general Windows troubleshooting measures, not confirmed explanations for every Until Then crash. If there is no runtime-related error, prioritize the game-specific AppData, save, file, and GPU checks first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Reinstall only after protecting saves
Use this when: verification, a clean AppData test, driver checks, and overlay tests have not resolved the problem.
- Back up
%APPDATA%Until Then. - Uninstall the game from Steam.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Until Then again to a normal Steam library folder.
- Verify the files after installation.
- Launch the game before restoring old saves or configuration data.
A reinstall replaces the game installation, but it will not reliably fix an incompatible GPU, bad driver, overlay conflict, or problematic save. If the clean installation works until old data is restored, the data—not the installation—is the likely cause.
What to do for a repeatable chapter or transition crash
If the game always fails at the same cutscene, chapter, or loading transition, follow this narrower path:
Best Value
- Are you looking for a canasta Apparel for a real card game lover?
- Then you should buy this Wild Cards Canasta design! For a game night!
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Verify the Steam files.
- Back up and rename
%APPDATA%Until Then. - Test with low graphics settings and overlays disabled.
- Record the exact chapter, scene, language, display mode, and whether the crash occurs every time.
- Search the official Steam technical-issue route and contact the developer if the clean test still fails.
A deterministic crash can be a game-specific bug. Do not assume that buying new hardware will fix a repeatable transition failure.
When a crash restarts the whole PC
If Windows reboots, shuts down, or shows a blue screen, stop treating the issue as an ordinary missing game file. Graphics drivers, overheating, unstable hardware, power delivery, and Windows software can all cause system-level failures.
Check Windows Event Viewer, GPU and CPU temperatures, power connections, and recent driver or hardware changes. Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts and stop-code errors identifies hardware devices, drivers, and software as possible causes. Avoid repeatedly launching the game while the computer is overheating or unstable.
What to send support
If the crash remains, provide useful evidence instead of only reporting that “the game crashes.” Include:
- Windows version
- CPU, GPU, and RAM
- GPU driver version
- Whether the GPU is integrated or dedicated
- The exact point of failure
- Whether the crash is repeatable
- Whether it began after an update or demo-save migration
- The result of Steam file verification
- Whether renaming
%APPDATA%Until Thenhelped - Any error message or crash log
Include reproducible steps, such as “launches normally, then crashes during the Chapter X transition after loading this save.” That gives the developer a much better starting point than a generic crash report.
Windows-only scope
These instructions are for the Windows/Steam version. Steam also lists a SteamOS/Linux version, but Windows paths such as %APPDATA%Until Then, Windows driver instructions, and Windows runtime repairs do not transfer directly to Steam Deck or Linux. Use the game’s platform-specific Steam discussions and support route for those systems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Intel integrated graphics run Until Then?
It may run on some systems, but the developer has warned that some Intel integrated GPUs are below the listed minimum graphics requirement. Lowering settings is worth trying, but operation below minimum specifications is not guaranteed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Will Steam file verification delete my saves?
Verification repairs installation files. It should not normally remove saves, but backing up %APPDATA%Until Then before troubleshooting is still the safest practice.
Is deleting the AppData folder safe?
Not without a backup. Rename the folder to Until Then_backup first so you can restore local saves and settings if the clean test does not help.
Should I force DirectX 11 or download a DLL?
Do not download standalone DLL files from unofficial sites. Repair Windows runtimes only from Microsoft or the game’s trusted redistributable files; there is no documented universal DirectX launch switch supplied here.
Are these fixes valid for Steam Deck?
No. This guide targets Windows. Steam Deck and Linux use different paths, drivers, and troubleshooting procedures.
