Checkmate combines those jobs with host, container and incident-monitoring features, but its reference deployment adds MongoDB.
Neither project’s cited documentation provides a neutral, same-workload comparison of CPU use, memory, latency, database growth or alert-delivery reliability. This guide therefore compares documented capabilities and operating trade-offs rather than declaring a performance winner.

What Uptime Kuma monitors
Uptime Kuma is designed around endpoint and service availability. Its project README lists the following monitor types:
#1 Best Overall
- Hardware Controller with Professional Network Management-Centralized management for up to 100 Omada devices including Omada access points, Omada Security Gateways and Jetstream switches.
- Premium Hardware Design-Industry-leading flexible Rackmount/Desktop design with a powerful chipset, durable metal casing, 2 fast ethernet ports and 1 USB 2.0 port for auto backup.

- HTTP(S) requests for websites and APIs
- TCP connection checks
- Keyword and JSON-query checks for validating response content
- WebSocket checks
- Ping checks
- DNS-record checks
- Push monitors for jobs that report their own state
- Steam Game Server checks
- Docker-container monitors
The same README lists multiple status pages, certificate information, proxy support, two-factor authentication and notifications through more than 90 services. It also lists 20-second intervals. That figure comes from the project README retrieved in 2026; it should not be read as a controlled measurement of alert latency or as proof that every monitor operates at that interval under every configuration.
When Uptime Kuma’s scope is enough
It fits a homelab, small web property or game server where the key questions are “Is the endpoint reachable?”, “Did the response contain the expected value?” and “Who should be notified?” You can cover a wide range of protocols without adding a separate database service to the basic Docker installation.

What Checkmate adds
Checkmate documents the same broad availability categories while extending into infrastructure and incident operations. Its feature page lists HTTP, ping, TCP, gRPC, WebSocket, DNS, PageSpeed, infrastructure, Docker, game-server and SSL monitoring. Capture-based hardware monitoring reports CPU, memory, disk, network and temperature data to your Checkmate instance.
Incident and public communication tools
Checkmate lists public status pages, incident history, selectable themes, branding and API validation. Its 2026 feature page lists 12 alert channels and global uptime checks from six continents. Those are published feature counts, not an independent reliability test or a guarantee that an individual deployment will probe from every listed location.
Data ownership
Checkmate’s infrastructure documentation says Capture reports to your own Checkmate instance, with data kept in your database; it describes no SaaS backend and no telemetry pipeline. The same documentation states that Checkmate and Capture are AGPL-3.0 and have no per-host pricing.

Feature-by-feature comparison
Endpoint and protocol coverage
For ordinary websites, APIs, TCP services, DNS records and game servers, both products provide relevant checks. Uptime Kuma’s README explicitly includes keyword and JSON-query validation, while Checkmate’s list adds gRPC and PageSpeed as named monitor types. If response-body assertions are central to your checks, verify the exact validation workflow in the current Uptime Kuma interface; if gRPC or page-load measurements are requirements, Checkmate has those categories documented.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Docker and container checks
Both products can monitor Docker, but that capability requires access to the Docker daemon. The access decision is more important than the label on the monitor; details and safeguards are covered below.
Host and infrastructure metrics
The cited Uptime Kuma README passage does not establish host CPU, memory, disk, network or temperature collection. Checkmate documents those metrics through its Capture agent. Select Checkmate when you want availability and basic host telemetry in the same self-hosted system rather than pairing Uptime Kuma with another metrics stack.
Certificates, SSL and PageSpeed
Uptime Kuma’s README lists certificate information. Checkmate’s feature page lists SSL and PageSpeed monitor types. These labels indicate documented functionality, but the supplied documentation does not provide a neutral comparison of certificate-renewal detection, browser-engine behavior, measurement geography or PageSpeed score accuracy.
Deployment and storage requirements
Running Uptime Kuma in Docker
The official Uptime Kuma wiki gives this Docker pattern:
Rank #3
- (10/100/1G) Gigabit Bypass network tap / sniffer equivalent to port mirror on a switch.
- The two monitor/sniff ports are isolated from the network being monitored.
- Automatic bypass of device on power fail.
- Power-over-Ethernet (POE) pass-through. Rated at .75A max at 57vdc
- 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.
docker run -d --restart=unless-stopped -p 3001:3001 -v uptime-kuma:/app/data --name uptime-kuma louislam/uptime-kuma:1
This maps the web interface to port 3001 and keeps application data in the named volume mounted at /app/data. The wiki warns that POSIX file locks are required to avoid SQLite corruption and specifically highlights file-locking problems on NFS. Use storage that reliably supports POSIX locking; do not place the SQLite-backed data volume on an NFS share unless you have verified locking behavior for your environment.
- Install Docker on the host and make sure port 3001 is available or deliberately remap it.
- Run the documented container command with persistent storage.
- Open the mapped port, create the administrator account and configure authentication before exposing the interface beyond a trusted network.
- Add one low-risk monitor first, confirm that an expected outage creates an alert, then add production endpoints.
- Back up the persistent volume and test restoration before relying on the monitor during an incident.
Uptime Kuma also has a non-Docker Node.js/PM2 installation path. The cited material identifies that option but does not provide a complete command sequence here, so follow the project’s current installation instructions for version-specific steps.
Running Checkmate
Checkmate’s installation guide describes Docker as the recommended fast path. Its reference deployment uses the ghcr.io/bluewave-labs/checkmate application image together with MongoDB as a separate required service. That is a larger dependency footprint than Uptime Kuma’s single-container example: plan for the application, the database, persistent database storage and a backup procedure.
The same guide documents Kubernetes/Helm and source-installation options. The image supports both linux/amd64 and linux/arm64, and the documentation names Apple Silicon and Raspberry Pi 4/5 among supported ARM devices. Exact environment variables and database settings can change with releases, so use the current Checkmate installation guide rather than copying an old compose file.

- Provision MongoDB with persistent storage for the reference Docker architecture.
- Deploy the Checkmate application image and connect it to MongoDB using the release’s documented configuration.
- Protect the administrator interface, create a status page only after deciding what information may be public, and configure alert channels.
- Install Capture only on hosts whose metrics you want to collect, then verify that CPU, memory, disk, network and temperature data arrive in your own database.
Docker monitoring is a security boundary
Uptime Kuma’s warning
Uptime Kuma’s Docker-monitor documentation states that exposing the Docker socket or TCP port gives Uptime Kuma full control over the host’s Docker daemon. It also says that exposing Uptime Kuma to the Internet is not recommended when this monitor type is enabled.

In practical terms, a compromised dashboard could use daemon access to create containers, mount host paths or otherwise control workloads. Treat the Docker monitor as a privileged administration integration, not as an ordinary read-only health check.
Checkmate’s documented connection methods
Checkmate documents three approaches:
- Local Unix socket: for a containerized Checkmate instance, the documentation shows mounting
/var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock:ro. - Remote daemon over TLS: remote TCP access is upgraded to TLS and requires client credentials.
- Capture endpoint: use the Capture agent’s endpoint instead of directly giving the application a Docker socket.
A read-only socket mount reduces accidental write operations but does not make an exposed dashboard safe by itself; the daemon interface remains sensitive. Keep the dashboard behind authentication and network controls. For remote Docker, use TLS, protect client credentials and restrict which hosts can connect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStatus pages, alerts and incidents
Uptime Kuma
Uptime Kuma’s README lists multiple status pages, domain mapping, certificate information and more than 90 notification services. That breadth is useful when a homelab or a game community uses several chat, email, webhook or automation destinations. The README’s 20-second interval figure describes the project’s advertised monitoring cadence; it does not establish end-to-end delivery time during an outage.
Checkmate
Checkmate lists 12 alert channels, public status pages, incident history, themes, branding and API validation. Incident history is the notable distinction for teams that need to document what happened, not merely show a current up/down state. Its six-continent global-check claim describes the feature page’s stated probe coverage; it is not a neutral availability guarantee for every monitor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hardware footprint and Raspberry Pi choices
Checkmate explicitly documents ARM64 images and names Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5. That makes a Raspberry Pi 5 a reasonable optional host for either application, provided you select adequate storage, power and cooling for the board and the database workload. The documentation does not provide a controlled CPU, RAM, latency or database-growth comparison on Raspberry Pi hardware, so do not infer that one product will be faster from architecture labels alone.

For longer measurement time, kindly connect an external power source. The product interface displays battery usage, providing a clear understanding of the power status.
For Uptime Kuma’s single-container pattern, persistent application storage is the main documented state requirement. For Checkmate’s reference Docker layout, account for MongoDB storage as well as the application container. On either platform, use reliable local storage and maintain tested backups.
Which should you choose?
Choose Uptime Kuma when
- Your primary requirement is endpoint uptime, response validation and a public or private status page.
- You want the smallest documented Docker footprint: one container, port 3001 and persistent
/app/data. - Notification breadth matters more than built-in host telemetry; the README lists more than 90 services.
- You are willing to keep Docker monitoring tightly isolated or omit it.
Choose Checkmate when
- You need host CPU, memory, disk, network and temperature data alongside uptime checks.
- gRPC, PageSpeed, SSL, Docker-host, game-server or incident-history features are part of the same dashboard.
- You want public status pages with themes, branding and incident history.
- You accept MongoDB in the reference Docker deployment and can operate the additional service.
- You prefer an AGPL-3.0 project that states there are no monitor limits and no per-host pricing.
Use the security requirement as a tie-breaker
If you do not have a clear plan to protect a Docker socket or remote daemon credentials, do not enable Docker monitoring merely because it is available. Start with network-level checks and add privileged integrations only after restricting access, securing authentication and documenting a recovery path.
Practical setup checklist
- Define which endpoints, protocols and failure conditions matter before creating monitors.
- Place the monitoring service on a host and network path that are independent enough to observe the services you care about.
- Use persistent local storage with reliable file locking for Uptime Kuma; plan MongoDB persistence for Checkmate’s reference deployment.
- Configure at least two alert destinations and test each one with an intentional, reversible failure.
- Decide which status-page details can be public; status pages can disclose hostnames, component names and outage timing.
- Back up application and database data, then perform a restore test.
- Restrict administration interfaces, enable two-factor authentication where available and avoid direct Internet exposure of privileged Docker integrations.
- Record the monitor interval, alert routing and escalation owner so an outage does not depend on one administrator’s memory.
What the available evidence does not establish
The cited official sources do not include a neutral benchmark using identical monitors and workloads. There is therefore no supported conclusion that Uptime Kuma or Checkmate uses less CPU or RAM, delivers alerts faster, produces a smaller database or has higher alert reliability. Those questions require controlled testing on your hardware, network, monitor count, interval and notification providers.
Likewise, a listed monitor type does not by itself describe every limit, retention policy, probe geography, browser implementation or authentication configuration. Confirm release-specific behavior in the current product documentation before designing a production deployment around a detail that matters to you.
Verdict
Uptime Kuma is the clearer choice for straightforward self-hosted uptime and status monitoring with broad notification coverage and a simple documented Docker deployment. Checkmate is the better fit when uptime is only one part of the requirement and you want infrastructure metrics, Docker visibility, PageSpeed, SSL, incident history and public status pages together. The trade-off is operational complexity, especially MongoDB and the security work required for privileged Docker access. Choose by the scope you need, not by an unproven performance assumption.
