Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf an external SSD does not appear on your Steam Deck or ROG Ally, start by connecting it directly with a known-good data cable, then check whether the handheld’s operating system sees the disk. On the ROG Ally, Disk Management can distinguish an offline disk or missing drive letter from a device Windows cannot detect. On Steam Deck, Valve’s documented ext4 guidance is for microSD cards—not a general instruction to reformat USB SSDs. Avoid formatting or creating a volume until you know the drive contains no files you need.
1. Rule out the cable, port, and hub first
- Disconnect the SSD from any dock or hub and plug it directly into the handheld. A hub or dock can introduce a connection or power problem. ASUS recommends bypassing a USB-C docking hub when troubleshooting a device that is not recognized: ASUS USB Type-C troubleshooting.
- Check the USB-C plug, cable, and handheld port for visible damage or a loose fit. Unplug and reconnect the drive; if practical, flip the USB-C plug and try another port.
- Try a different cable that supports data transfer, not just charging. If you have another computer, connect the SSD to it with the same cable.
- If it works directly but not through the dock, investigate the hub, dock, and its power supply. ASUS notes that a dock may not provide sufficient power.
If the SSD is absent on multiple hosts when connected with a known-good data cable, the SSD or its enclosure may be at fault. ASUS recommends contacting the USB-device manufacturer when the device still fails on another computer (ASUS USB Type-C troubleshooting). A replacement drive is worth considering only after these checks point to a device-side failure.
2. On ROG Ally, see whether Windows detects the disk
Open Computer Management as an administrator, then select Disk Management. Look for the external SSD and note its status before making changes. ASUS’s Windows 10/11 SSD guidance covers gaming handhelds as well as other PCs: ASUS SSD troubleshooting.
The disk is Offline
Right-click the disk and choose the option to bring it Online. The exact menu wording can vary with Windows state and version.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
The disk is Online but has no drive letter
Right-click the volume, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, and add an available letter. This can make a detected, usable volume accessible in File Explorer; it does not repair a damaged drive or filesystem.
The space is marked Unallocated
Do not create a new volume if the SSD may contain files you need. ASUS’s New Simple Volume step applies only when the partition is known to be empty. Creating or formatting a volume can make existing data inaccessible. Back up recoverable files first, if possible, and seek qualified help before changing partitions on a data-bearing drive.

The disk is not listed
Disk Management cannot fix a drive Windows has not enumerated. Continue with the connection checks, then inspect Device Manager and test the SSD on another host.
3. Check Device Manager and Windows updates on ROG Ally
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives and look for the external SSD. If its entry is disabled, enable it.
- If Windows recognizes an entry but the device is malfunctioning, ASUS’s guidance includes uninstalling that device entry and restarting so Windows can reinstall its driver. Use this for the relevant external device, not unrelated disk devices.
- Check for Windows, driver, and BIOS updates using ASUS’s applicable support guidance. ASUS also describes SSD diagnostics in MyASUS when the feature is supported; not every product or configuration exposes that diagnostic page. See ASUS SSD troubleshooting.
If the SSD remains absent from Device Manager after a direct connection and another cable, repeat the cross-host test. A drive that fails on another computer as well is more likely to have an SSD, enclosure, or cable fault than an Ally-specific visibility issue.

4. On Steam Deck, do not assume the SSD needs ext4
Valve’s FAQ says Steam Deck formats microSD cards as “ext4 with casefolding.” That statement is specifically about microSD cards; it does not establish that every external USB SSD must use ext4, nor does the FAQ give a procedure for mounting or formatting an external SSD. Valve describes docking as similar to connecting a USB-C hub to a PC. See the Steam Deck FAQ.
For a USB SSD that does not appear, first test a direct connection, cable, port, and—if available—another host. Do not reformat a drive containing data as an initial troubleshooting step. Use an official Steam Deck procedure that matches the drive and your goal, or seek qualified support before changing its filesystem.

5. When to contact support
- It works directly but not through the dock: check the dock or hub, its cable, and its power supply. A powered USB-C hub is relevant only if direct connection works and the current hub appears to be the problem.
- It appears in Windows but is Offline or lacks a drive letter: use the corresponding Disk Management action, taking care not to alter a drive with needed data.
- It is missing from Disk Management and Device Manager: test another data-capable cable and another host. If it remains undetected, contact the SSD or enclosure maker.
- It contains important files and appears Unallocated or otherwise incorrectly partitioned: stop before creating, formatting, or repartitioning a volume; ask a qualified data-recovery professional about safe next steps.
For an Ally-specific BIOS issue, ASUS documents two ways to enter BIOS: hold the volume-down button while powering on, or use Windows Settings > Recovery > Advanced Startup > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. This is an entry procedure, not evidence that a normal external data SSD should appear in BIOS. The steps are in the ROG Ally FAQ.
