Windows has detected a USB device that exposes more than one function but cannot communicate with it correctly. The cause is usually a driver, USB port, hub or dock, insufficient power, Windows-version compatibility, or failing hardware.
Do not choose a fix from the wording alone. Open the device’s Properties in Device Manager and record the Device status error code. That code determines whether you should update a driver, uninstall and reinstall the device, restart Windows, or concentrate on the connection and power path.

What “USB Composite Device is an Older USB Device” means
A composite USB device is one physical product that presents several USB functions to Windows. A game controller may expose controls, audio, and another interface; a webcam can expose video and microphone functions; a printer or multifunction accessory can present several endpoints. Windows loads a composite-device driver and then separate drivers for the functions it exposes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe warning can appear when that device is connected through USB-A or USB-C, directly or through an intermediate hub, dock, monitor, or adapter. “Older” does not prove that the hardware is obsolete. It can simply indicate that Windows is using a compatibility path, that the device firmware or driver is not negotiating correctly, or that the electrical connection is unreliable.

Microsoft’s wording for a closely related failure is: The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
A yellow exclamation mark beside the composite device in Device Manager confirms that Windows has recorded a problem, but the exclamation mark alone does not identify the cause.
Capture the Device Manager code before changing anything
- Press Windows key + X, then select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. The entry may be named USB Composite Device, Unknown USB Device, or similar.
- Right-click the entry with the yellow exclamation mark and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, read Device status and write down the exact Code.
- Also note the device’s location, the port or dock being used, your Windows edition and version, and whether the device works intermittently or never works.
The code is the decision point. A Code 10 needs a different response from Code 43, and a restart-specific code is not evidence that the hardware must be replaced.
Remove the connection variables first
Before reinstalling drivers, test the simplest possible USB path. This separates a bad device from a bad port, adapter, hub, or dock.

- Save your work and disconnect the affected device.
- Remove every hub, dock, monitor USB passthrough, KVM, extension cable, and USB-C adapter between the device and the computer.
- Reconnect the device directly to a built-in USB port on the computer.
- If the computer has both USB-A and USB-C ports, try the connector and port type recommended by the device manufacturer. A USB-C port can support different USB generations and power capabilities, so the shape alone does not guarantee identical behavior.
- Try a second built-in port. On a desktop, use a port on the rear motherboard panel rather than a front-panel extension for the first test.
- If the device has a detachable cable, test a known-good, data-capable cable. Some USB cables provide power only.
- Test the device on another computer. Use a direct port there as well, without a hub or dock.
If the device works directly but fails through a hub or dock, the intermediate hardware, its power budget, firmware, or compatibility is the likely branch to investigate. If it fails on several direct ports and another computer, continue with the device manufacturer’s support process rather than repeatedly reinstalling Windows drivers.
Check USB power and charging conditions
A bus-powered device shares the computer’s available USB power with every other connected accessory. A low battery or a crowded USB bus can make a healthy device disconnect, fail to enumerate, or appear to have a driver problem.
- If the device has its own power adapter, connect that adapter before testing again.
- Plug a laptop into AC power. Windows may temporarily limit USB power when the battery is low.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB drives, cameras, lighting, capture hardware, and other accessories while testing.
- If a hub is required, use a powered hub with its own adapter and connect it directly to the computer. A passive hub cannot provide more power than its upstream port supplies.
- For a dock, connect the dock’s specified power supply and update the dock firmware only from its manufacturer.
Compare the result with and without external power. A device that works only when externally powered is not necessarily defective; the original setup may simply exceed the available bus power.

Apply the fix that matches the error code
| Device Manager code | What to try first | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Code 10 | Choose Update driver. If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, obtain the current driver or firmware package from the device manufacturer and follow its installation instructions. | Windows could not start the device. A current, correct vendor driver may resolve it; if not, return to the port, power, and hardware tests. |
| Codes 18, 19, 39 or 43 | In Device Manager, right-click the affected device, choose Uninstall device, confirm, then select Action > Scan for hardware changes. | Windows rebuilds the device entry and attempts to reinstall the available driver. Reconnect the device if it is not rediscovered. |
| Codes 14, 21, 38 or 42 | Restart Windows. Use Start > Power > Restart, not merely sleep or hibernate. | The status indicates that a restart is part of the required recovery sequence. |
Do not download a driver from an unidentified driver-archive site. Use Windows Update, the computer maker, the motherboard maker, or the USB device manufacturer. Confirm that the package matches your Windows version and the device model.
Update or reinstall the driver safely
Try Windows’ built-in update path
- In Device Manager, open the composite device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab and choose Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after an installation, even if the wizard does not insist on it.
If Windows cannot find a driver, check Settings > Windows Update and install available updates, including optional driver updates when the device maker identifies one as required. Windows Update may provide only a generic driver; a device-specific package can still be necessary for a controller, headset, capture device, or other gaming accessory.
Uninstall and let Windows rediscover the device
- Disconnect the USB device if it is safe to do so.
- Open Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected entry and choose Uninstall device. Do not select an option to remove unrelated USB host controllers unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically require it.
- Restart Windows, or choose Action > Scan for hardware changes after reconnecting the device.
- Open Properties again and confirm whether the error code has cleared.
If the device disappears from Device Manager, unplug it, restart, and connect it directly to a different port. If Windows reinstalls the same failing entry, the unchanged code is useful evidence for the manufacturer.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Check USB generation, connector and compatibility
USB 2.0 and USB 3.x ports can look similar while using different controllers and power behavior. A USB-C connector also does not identify the USB generation by itself. Test the device on a port of the generation it supports, using the manufacturer’s cable where possible.
For a controller, headset, webcam, or capture accessory, a direct USB 2.0 port can be a useful diagnostic even when the product supports USB 3.x. This is a test, not a universal performance recommendation: high-bandwidth devices may require USB 3.x for their normal operation.

If the device works on another computer but not this one, install chipset, USB-controller, and system updates from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. If several unrelated USB devices fail on the same ports, suspect the computer’s controller, port hardware, firmware, or power delivery rather than one composite device.

Legacy Windows cases require version-specific handling
Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 USB 3.0/2.0 behavior
Microsoft documented a case in which some USB 3.0 devices failed when connected to USB 2.0 ports while hardware-controlled USB 2.0 Link Power Management was enabled. That documentation applies to the specified Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 conditions. Do not apply its hotfix assumptions to current Windows versions unless your symptoms and operating system match the bulletin exactly.
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 composite-driver crash
Microsoft also documented a USB composite-driver (Usbccgp.sys) crash involving USB selective suspend and STOP 0x000000D1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. This is a legacy, version-specific scenario. If you are maintaining one of those systems and see that stop error, use Microsoft’s documentation and the hardware vendor’s supported update path. Do not treat the old workaround as a general fix for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Use a controlled test matrix
Record each test instead of changing several variables at once. The pattern usually identifies the failing layer.
| Test | Connection | Power | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Direct USB port on the original computer | Normal computer power | Establishes the baseline. |
| B | Second direct port | Normal computer power | If only one port fails, that port or its controller is suspect. |
| C | Direct port with unused USB devices removed | Computer connected to AC | Improvement points to power contention. |
| D | Powered hub or correctly powered dock | External hub or dock power | Improvement points to the original hub, dock, cable, or power budget. |
| E | Direct port on another computer | That computer’s normal power | Failure on both computers raises the likelihood of device or cable failure. |
When to stop troubleshooting and replace or escalate
Contact the device manufacturer when the error code remains after the correct driver procedure and the device fails on multiple known-good direct ports. Include the exact Device Manager code, Windows version, device model and firmware version, cable type, whether external power changed the result, and the other-computer test.
Replace the cable first when the device uses a detachable cable and a known-good data cable produces a different result. Replace or repair the device when it fails identically on another computer with direct connection and appropriate power. A manufacturer may have a firmware update, a model-specific driver, or a documented compatibility limit that Windows cannot diagnose.
