“ This application failed to start because usft_ext.dll was not found.” You may also see “The file usft_ext.dll is missing or corrupted,” “Error loading usft_ext.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
The 60-second answer
usft_ext.dll is a third-party, 32-bit application DLL associated with Ufasoft’s ExtLIBs component. It is not a normal Windows system file.
The safest fix is to identify the Ufasoft program that is failing, then repair or reinstall that program using its original installer. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32.
Ufasoft software associated with this file includes Common Lisp or Lisp Studio and possibly Ufasoft Sniffer. The filename alone cannot prove which product installed it, so begin by identifying the calling application.

What causes the error
The usual causes are:
- The Ufasoft application was incompletely installed.
- An update or uninstall removed the DLL.
- Antivirus software quarantined it.
- The file exists, but another dependency is missing.
- The application and DLL have incompatible architectures.
- The DLL was moved from its application folder.
- A suspicious program created a fake copy with the same name.
- Windows has broader component or storage corruption.
Indexed file records identify usft_ext.dll as a Win32 or 32-bit file. One indexed record lists version 7.0.13058.0 and a size of about 0.83 MB. Treat those details as identification clues, not as a guarantee that every Ufasoft product uses the same build.
Step 1: Identify the program that is requesting the DLL
The correct repair depends on the parent application.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and surrounding text in the error dialog. It may identify Ufasoft Lisp, Lisp Studio, Sniffer, or another older program.
Also check the shortcut:
- Right-click the program’s desktop or Start-menu shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target.
- Note the executable name and folder.

A separate historical record associates the file with a Sniffer folder. These locations are product-specific clues, not universal installation paths.
Check Task Manager
If the program remains open briefly:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Processes.
- Find the failing program.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
The folder containing the calling executable is more useful than searching the entire drive for usft_ext.dll. Application DLLs are commonly stored beside the executable that loads them.
Step 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed the file because it was damaged, altered, bundled with unwanted software, or detected as suspicious.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
usft_ext.dllor the Ufasoft application. - Expand the event and inspect the original path and detection name.
Do not restore the file simply because its name matches the error. Restore it only if the original location, parent application, installer, and surrounding files are trusted. If the installer is available, reinstalling the application is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.

Step 3: Repair or reinstall the original application
This is the most likely successful fix.
Try Windows repair first
Some older programs expose a repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Ufasoft application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
If there is no repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the Ufasoft program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
Start the program again. If it opens without the DLL message, the repair restored the application’s local files.
Reinstall when repair is unavailable
Use the original installer supplied by Ufasoft, your organization, or the software distributor. Avoid third-party DLL repositories.
Before reinstalling, record any license information or application settings you need. Then:
- Uninstall the affected Ufasoft program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if it cannot write to its installation folder.
- Launch the program from its newly created shortcut.
If the installer offers a 32-bit and 64-bit choice, use the architecture intended for the application that originally produced the error. A 32-bit Ufasoft application needs its compatible 32-bit DLL, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

If the program came through a launcher, open that launcher and use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command. The launcher should restore the complete application set rather than just one DLL.
Step 4: Confirm whether the file is missing or a dependency is missing
“ The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that usft_ext.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load a dependency required by it.
Check the application folder identified in Step 1:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the folder containing the program’s executable.
- Search that folder for
usft_ext.dll. - If it is present, do not move or rename it.
- Repair or reinstall the application anyway, because the file may be corrupted or may have incompatible dependencies.
Do not copy a DLL from another Ufasoft installation. Different old products may use different builds, and replacing one application’s file with another can create a new compatibility problem.

usft_ext.dll is not itself identified as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. Installing Visual C++ at random will not normally recreate it.
Consider the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable only if the error separately names a file such as:
MSVCP*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dllapi-ms-win-crt-*.dll
Use the Microsoft package that matches the application architecture. A 32-bit application generally requires the x86 runtime, even on 64-bit Windows. Restart the application after installation.
If the Ufasoft installer documents a particular runtime, follow that installer’s requirement rather than installing unrelated packages.

Step 6: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for certain COM or ActiveX components.
There is no verified evidence that usft_ext.dll requires registration. Running this command is therefore not a standard fix:
regsvr32 usft_ext.dll
It may produce a message saying that the entry point is missing, or it may create the impression that registration succeeded while leaving the application broken. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents it for this file.
Step 7: Check Windows components only if other software is failing
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They do not guarantee the recreation of a third-party Ufasoft DLL.
Use them when Windows has other symptoms, such as damaged updates, several unrelated programs failing, or system components reporting corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Ufasoft application again.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired or found no integrity violations. If either command reports that it could not complete, copy the exact result and address that Windows issue separately. Do not assume these commands restored usft_ext.dll.

A driver is not the normal cause of a missing application-local usft_ext.dll. Consider driver troubleshooting only if the Ufasoft software also fails during network capture, graphics initialization, device access, or another hardware-related operation.

- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Obtain updates from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and retest the application.

Step 9: Scan for a malicious copy
Historical security records have associated the filename with malware and cryptocurrency-mining activity. That does not mean every usft_ext.dll is malicious, but location and origin matter.
Run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If Windows Security continues to detect the file, do not add an exclusion or restore it immediately. Remove the unwanted application identified by the detection. Consider Microsoft Defender Offline scan if the detection returns after Windows starts.
An authentic-looking filename is not proof of authenticity. Compare the file’s path with the parent program’s installation folder, inspect its digital signature when one is present, and rely on the original installer rather than a loose file.
If reinstalling still does not work
Work through this checklist:
- Confirm that you are repairing the exact executable named by the error.
- Check whether antivirus quarantined a newly installed copy.
- Verify that the application folder contains the DLL beside the calling executable.
- Confirm that the application is 32-bit and has not been replaced by an incompatible build.
- Check the error for a second missing dependency.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Use the application’s compatibility settings if the legacy program will not launch:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode.
- Choose an older Windows version only if needed.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- If the problem began immediately after a recent installation or update, consider System Restore:
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Review affected programs and complete the wizard.
System Restore preserves personal files but can remove programs, drivers, or settings installed after the selected restore point.
If the parent program is no longer needed, uninstall it instead of restoring an orphaned DLL. Leaving an old application incomplete or downloading an isolated replacement creates more risk than benefit.
