uudf.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL used with Universal Disk Format, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. If Windows says it is missing, corrupted, or not designed to run on Windows, repair the Windows component rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
uudf.dll is identified as UDF Utility DLL and is associated with Windows support for the Universal Disk Format file system used by DVDs, optical media, and some disk images. Microsoft documents UDF as a supported file system in its disc-format documentation and file-system API.

The normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32uudf.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit Windows binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility binaries. A 32-bit program can therefore report a loader error even when a 64-bit copy exists. That does not mean you should download a separate 32-bit file. Windows component repair should restore the correct copy for the installed system.
The exact version depends on the Windows release and servicing state. Do not select a DLL from a version list based only on its number.

Several programs report uudf.dll errors |
Missing or corrupted Windows component | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The error began after an update or upgrade | Failed servicing operation | Install pending updates, then repair Windows |
| Defender recently detected or removed the file | Quarantine or a suspicious replacement | Check Protection History and verify the file |
| Only one old program fails | Application-specific damage or compatibility issue | Repair or reinstall that program |
| The file exists outside the Windows directory | Impostor or unrelated third-party DLL | Check its path and digital signature |
| Windows will not boot normally | Wider startup or system-file failure | Use Windows Recovery Environment |
Common messages include:
The program can't start because uudf.dll is missing from your computer.
Application could not be started because uudf.dll was not found.
uudf.dll cannot be loaded. Module was not found.
uudf.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The last message is a general Windows loader error. It does not prove that the application displaying it supplied the DLL.
Fix 1: Repair Windows automatically with DISM and SFC
This is the safest and most likely fix when the file is missing from System32, multiple applications fail, or the problem followed an update, cleanup operation, disk error, or interrupted upgrade.
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Press Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
2. Run DISM first
Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Leave the window open until the operation completes. DISM checks and repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source SFC uses for protected system files.
3. Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and try the program again.
Recommended Free Tools
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it found no integrity violations. If SFC repaired files, restarting before testing is important.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete the repair, install pending Windows updates and restart. Then run both commands again.
When repeatedly hunting through repair commands and trying to determine what changed becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems involved; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is handled by the full version, and it is not required for the built-in Windows repair process.
4. Check only this file
To verify the expected file directly, run:
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32uudf.dll
If Windows reports a problem, use:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32uudf.dll
Restart after the scan and retest the original application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Use a matching repair source if necessary
If Windows Update cannot provide the files, DISM can use a genuine Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ^
/Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a real repair source matching your Windows edition, language, architecture, and build. Do not point DISM at a random folder containing a DLL.
Microsoft documents this process in its Windows image repair guidance.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed or incomplete update can leave protected components mismatched.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
If Windows Update itself fails, note the complete error code and use Microsoft’s Windows Update repair guidance.
Fix 3: Check Defender quarantine before restoring anything
Windows Security may have quarantined a damaged or suspicious file.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
uudf.dll. - Expand the entry and review its path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore it merely because an application is missing it.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file after confirming that it is the signed Microsoft file in the expected Windows directory and that the detection is a false positive. Do not disable antivirus protection to force a DLL into System32. Microsoft explains these actions in its Protection History documentation.
If the quarantined file was outside C:Windows, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Fix 4: Check the disk for file-system damage
Back up important files first. A damaged disk can make system files unreadable or cause them to disappear.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk /f C:
- If Windows says the volume is in use, type
Yand press Enter. - Restart the computer.
- Allow the disk check to finish.
- Run DISM and SFC again after Windows starts.
If CHKDSK reports repeated errors, unusual delays, or unreadable sectors, investigate the drive before repeatedly repairing Windows.
Fix 5: Repair one affected application
If Windows works normally and only one old application reports uudf.dll, the application may be damaged, outdated, or incompatible. The program may simply be the first one to expose a damaged Windows component, so repair Windows first if the file is also missing from System32.

For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, use Reset where available, or uninstall and reinstall the program from its original publisher. Preserve saved data and configuration files before resetting or removing it.
Do not assume the application owns the Microsoft Windows copy of uudf.dll. A separate third-party program can also use the same filename for an unrelated UDF library, including libraries intended for Firebird. Its location, publisher, and signature must be checked before identifying it as the Windows component.
Fix 6: Verify the path and digital signature
A genuine Windows copy should normally be in:
C:WindowsSystem32uudf.dll
To inspect it:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Find
uudf.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the description and Microsoft company information.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A copy in a temporary folder, a game folder, a user profile, or an unfamiliar application directory may be unrelated or malicious. Do not replace the Windows copy manually until you have determined which file Windows is actually loading.
For a command-line location check, run:
where /r C:Windows uudf.dll
A missing result does not justify downloading the file. Run DISM and SFC instead.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points to a device problem
A driver update is not the normal fix for uudf.dll. Consider Device Manager only when the error occurs while accessing an optical drive, mounting media, or using a device whose driver is visibly failing.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, Storage controllers, or the category related to the failing device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Also check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for available driver updates. Use the computer or device manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows cannot find a suitable driver.
When identifying stale drivers across several device categories is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan finds; driver installation is handled by the full version, while updating a driver is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.
Recovery options when repair fails
System Restore
Use System Restore if the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, or software change and a restore point exists.

- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.

System Restore can remove applications and settings installed after that restore point. It does not replace a personal backup.
Startup Repair
If Windows cannot boot normally:
- Start the computer and enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Startup Repair.
- Choose the appropriate Windows account and enter its password if requested.
Microsoft provides additional Startup Repair instructions.
In-place repair
If DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore do not resolve the issue, perform a Windows repair installation using matching official Windows installation media. An in-place repair can rebuild Windows components while preserving personal files and applications when the correct installation options are selected. Back up important data first and confirm the edition and architecture match the installed system.
What not to do
- Do not download
uudf.dllfrom a random DLL site. - Do not copy it from another PC without matching Windows release, architecture, language, and servicing state.
- Do not paste an unverified copy into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because the filename ends in
.dll. - Do not run
regsvr32 uudf.dll.
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. uudf.dll is a Windows system library, not an established self-registering COM or ActiveX component, so registration will not repair a missing or corrupted copy and may produce a “DllRegisterServer was not found” error.

Is uudf.dll safe?
The Microsoft Windows copy is a legitimate system component. Safety depends on the file’s path, signature, provenance, and antivirus status. A file with the same name outside the Windows directory may be unrelated or malicious.
Should uudf.dll be in System32 or SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains the 64-bit copy and SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit compatibility copy. Do not choose a location manually based only on the application’s error message.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. uudf.dll is associated with Windows UDF support, not those runtime packages. Install a runtime only when the application’s official requirements specifically identify it.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
No. This is not a valid repair for uudf.dll.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
That is unsafe. The other computer may use a different Windows build, architecture, language, or servicing level. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or an in-place repair instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if only one game or program fails?
Repair or reinstall that program from its official installer after checking Windows integrity. If the program ships a different file with the same name, its installer is the correct source.
What information should I collect if the error continues?
Record the full error text, affected executable, Windows edition and build, path of every uudf.dll found, digital-signature result, and whether other applications fail. That separates a Windows component problem from an application-specific or impostor-DLL problem.
