“uwkplugin.dll” error messages
You may see one of these messages when starting a game or older application:
- “The program can’t start because uwkplugin.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting uwkplugin.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading uwkplugin.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because uwkplugin.dll was not found.”
- “uwkplugin.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
uwkplugin.dll is not a Windows system file. It is a game or application file associated with uWebKit, an older Unity plugin that embedded web content using Chromium-based technology.
The correct copy normally belongs inside the affected program’s folder, often at:
<Game folder><Game>_DataPluginsuwkplugin.dll
Do not download a replacement DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Different games can ship different builds, sizes, architectures, and companion files.

The safest first fix is to identify the game that reports the error and use its launcher to verify or repair the installation. If that option is unavailable, reinstall the program from its original installer or publisher-approved source.
Why uwkplugin.dll is missing
The usual causes are:
- A game update or installation stopped before all files were written.
- The file was corrupted or accidentally deleted.
- Antivirus software quarantined it.
- A mod or unofficial patch replaced or removed a companion file.
- The game was moved manually and its directory structure changed.
- The game is old and no longer works correctly with current Windows components.
- The named DLL exists, but another native DLL that it requires is missing.
- The game and plugin do not match in architecture, such as 32-bit versus 64-bit.
The exact wording “specified module could not be found” does not always mean uwkplugin.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency that the plugin needs.
Step 1: Find the affected game and check its folder
Before changing Windows, establish which program is failing.
- Note the application name in the error window.
- Right-click the game shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Start in or Target path.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for a folder ending in
_Data. - Open its
Pluginssubfolder.
A typical Unity installation resembles:
C:GamesExample GameExample Game_DataPlugins
The file should be part of that program’s installation, not a shared Windows directory. If uwkplugin.dll is absent, do not copy a file from another game. If it is present, check whether the error began after an update, cleanup utility, antivirus alert, mod installation, or move to another drive.
Step 2: Verify the game files
Steam
Steam can restore missing or damaged files from the game’s own distribution.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Steam may replace uwkplugin.dll and related files. The result is successful if the game reaches its main menu or starts without the DLL error.
If verification reports files repeatedly missing, do not keep downloading individual DLLs. Check antivirus quarantine, disk health, and whether a mod or unofficial patch is changing the installation.
Other launchers
Look for a menu named Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Validate files. The wording differs between launchers.

If the launcher has no repair function:
- Back up saved games if they are stored outside cloud synchronization.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original installer or the publisher-approved download source.
- Start the program before reinstalling mods or custom files.
A clean reinstall is more reliable than replacing only one DLL because uWebKit-based plugins may require other native files beside them.
Step 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or isolate a game DLL. A false positive is possible, but never restore the file blindly.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
uwkplugin.dllor the affected game folder. - Expand the event and record the full path and detection name.
- Run Update under virus and threat protection updates.
- Scan the entire game directory.
If the file was quarantined, first verify that the installation came from a legitimate source and that the publisher recognizes the file. If confirmed, restore it through Windows Security, then immediately run the launcher’s file verification again.
Only exclude the official game directory when necessary and when you understand the security tradeoff. Do not exclude System32, the entire drive, or the Downloads folder.

If antivirus removes the file again after verification, stop launching the program and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Step 4: Confirm architecture and dependencies
A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit Unity game. The relevant match is between the game and its plugin, not between the plugin and the operating system alone.
Check the game’s documentation, launcher settings, or executable properties:
- Right-click the game executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details and record the available product information.
- Check the publisher’s documentation for the supported architecture.
- Avoid mixing files from another release or another game.
A native plugin can also fail because a companion DLL is missing. This is especially likely when uwkplugin.dll is present but the error says “The specified module could not be found.”

The practical repair is to verify or reinstall the complete game directory. Do not try to solve a dependency problem by copying random DLLs into Windows folders.
Step 5: Install a runtime only when the error identifies one
uwkplugin.dll is not the name of a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX component, or .NET file. Installing runtimes at random is unlikely to restore the game’s own plugin.
If the game documentation or a separate error identifies Microsoft Visual C++, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
For an older 32-bit game, install the x86 package even when Windows is 64-bit. Use x64 only when the application requires it. Older redistributables can legitimately remain installed alongside newer versions, so do not remove them casually.

Run only installers supplied with the game or obtained from Microsoft.
DirectX and .NET
Use DirectX or .NET repair only when:
- The game displays a separate DirectX or .NET error.
- The game documentation lists that prerequisite.
- The original installer provides the required component.
To inspect optional Windows features:
- Press Windows key, type
Windows Features. - Open Turn Windows features on or off.
- Look for the feature named in the game’s documentation.
- Select it and choose OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable unrelated legacy features simply because uwkplugin.dll is missing.
Step 6: Repair Windows components when Windows itself is malfunctioning

Use them when several unrelated programs are failing, Windows features are damaged, or other system files show errors.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game’s file verification again.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair process.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repair actions require the full version; reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when its own DLL is missing.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and repeat the process once after DISM completes. If the same errors continue, investigate Windows servicing or use Microsoft support guidance rather than manually replacing system files.
Step 7: Update drivers only for a matching symptom
Graphics and chipset drivers do not normally supply uwkplugin.dll. Update them when the game also crashes with graphics errors, displays rendering problems, or fails after a Windows or driver change.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install the relevant driver and restart.
Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the hardware category named in the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

Do not register uwkplugin.dll as a routine repair.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, such as certain COM, ActiveX, or OLE components. A Unity native plugin is normally loaded directly by the game from its installation directory.
Running commands such as these can create misleading errors:
regsvr32 uwkplugin.dll
or:
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32uwkplugin.dll
Use Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation only when the application’s publisher specifically instructs you to register a component.
If the game is obsolete or abandoned
uWebKit is old and its original project is archived. Some games that used it may no longer receive updates for modern Windows, graphics drivers, or security software.
After verifying or reinstalling:
- Install the latest official patch available for the game.
- Read the game’s official compatibility instructions.
- Right-click the executable and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Use compatibility settings only if the publisher recommends them.
- Test the game before adding mods or unofficial fixes.
System Restore is appropriate only if the file disappeared after a recent system-wide change and you have a suitable restore point. It is not the preferred repair for an incomplete game installation.

Do not download uwkplugin.dll from a random site
Avoid DLL download sites websites, “DLL fixer” utilities, and files copied from another installation. The risks include:
- Malware or tampering.
- The wrong game-specific build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Missing companion libraries.
- A file that appears to repair the message but causes a different crash.
The safe sources are the affected game’s launcher, its original installer, the publisher-approved distribution service, and Microsoft for Windows runtimes or Windows repair tools. Manually copying a DLL is appropriate only when the publisher supplies that exact file for that exact game build and path.
If the error persists
After a clean verification or reinstall, collect:
- The exact game or application name.
- The complete error text.
- The full installation path.
- Whether
uwkplugin.dllexists in the_DataPluginsfolder. - Whether antivirus quarantined it.
- Your Windows version and system architecture.
- Any second missing-DLL message.
- Whether other games or applications fail.
If only one game fails, keep the investigation focused on that installation. If every program using similar native plugins fails, investigate antivirus, storage errors, permissions, and broader Windows corruption.
