V Rising RCON lets you administer a dedicated server from an external RCON client instead of joining the game. Enable it in ServerHostSettings.json, set a non-empty password and TCP port, restart the server, allow that port through the host firewall (and router, if necessary), then connect with a client such as mcrcon. RCON handles server-management tasks; it does not replace the Steam-ID and console setup required for in-game admin commands.

What V Rising RCON does—and what it does not do
Remote Console (RCON) is a separate TCP service exposed by the V Rising dedicated server. An RCON client sends text commands to that service, allowing an administrator to manage the server without opening the game client. The documented 1.0.x command set is intentionally limited: announcements, restart notices, shutdown scheduling, server metadata, the server password, version, and time.

RCON authentication is not the same as game-admin authorization. The RCON password authenticates the external client to the RCON listener. Commands that require V Rising’s in-game administrative console still depend on the administrator’s Steam ID being present in adminlist.txt and on the in-game console being enabled. Treat these as two separate configurations rather than assuming that a successful RCON login grants every game-admin capability.
Requirements and version differences
- A running V Rising dedicated server with access to its configuration and save-data folders.
- Permission to edit the Windows server configuration file or supply launch-time settings.
- A non-empty RCON password. The server will not accept an enabled RCON configuration with a blank password.
- A TCP port that is available on the server host and reachable from the computer running the RCON client.
- An RCON client. Stunlock’s instructions identify mcrcon as a client known to work with V Rising.

The standard Windows path supplied by Stunlock for the 1.0.x configuration is %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerServerHostSettings.json. A server installed under a service account or launched by a hosting panel may use that account’s profile, so verify the identity that starts the dedicated-server process before editing a different user’s file.

Enable RCON in ServerHostSettings.json
1. Stop or prepare the server for a controlled restart
Changing the file does not reconfigure a process that is already running. Plan a restart during a maintenance window, and make a backup copy of the existing JSON before editing it. A backup gives you a quick recovery path if a comma, quote, or duplicate property makes the file invalid.
2. Add the Rcon object
Inside the top-level JSON object, add or edit the following block:

}Enabled must be true for the listener to start. Password must contain a private, non-empty value. Port is a TCP port and may be changed to any valid TCP port that is free on the host and permitted by the network path. The example uses 25575, but that number is not a requirement.
JSON does not allow comments, trailing commas, or duplicate keys. Keep the new object separated from the preceding property with a comma, and do not add a comma after the final property in the file. If the file already contains an Rcon object, edit its existing properties instead of creating a second one.
3. Optionally bind RCON to a specific interface
Current settings documentation also exposes BindAddress. Set it when the server has multiple network interfaces and you want RCON to listen only on a particular address, such as a private management interface. Binding to a private interface can reduce exposure, but the chosen address must exist on the machine and be reachable by your administration workstation.

}If you omit BindAddress, use the server’s default listening behavior. Do not guess an address: an incorrect bind value can leave the service unreachable even though the rest of the configuration is valid.

For 1.1.x servers, the documented alternatives are environment variables:
VR_RCON_ENABLEDVR_RCON_PORTVR_RCON_PASSWORDVR_RCON_BIND_ADDRESS
The equivalent command-line switches are -rconEnabled, -rconPort, -rconPassword, and -rconBindAddress. These are useful for a service definition, container, or hosting panel that generates launch arguments. Keep credentials out of shared scripts and process listings where other users could read them. If both a file and an override are present, inspect the actual launch configuration and startup log to determine which value is being applied rather than assuming the file wins.
5. Restart and confirm that the process reads the settings
Save the file, restart the dedicated server, and wait for it to finish loading. A restart is required after a file edit. If the server fails to start, restore the backup and validate the JSON structure before trying again; a malformed configuration is a file-format problem, not an RCON networking problem.
Open the TCP path without exposing more than necessary
Host firewall
Create an inbound rule for the selected TCP port on the machine running the dedicated server. Limit the rule to the administrator’s source network or management addresses when your operating system supports scoped rules. The exact screens and commands differ between Windows editions, Linux distributions, and hosting panels, so use the firewall tool appropriate to the host rather than applying a generic recipe.

Router or edge firewall
When the client is outside the server’s local network, forward the same TCP port on the router or edge firewall to the server’s private IP address. A port-forward rule must point to the correct machine, and that machine should have a stable local address so the rule does not break after a DHCP change. If RCON is intended only for local administration, do not create an internet-facing forward at all.
Address and port selection
Connect to the address on which the RCON service is actually bound: a private address for a LAN-only setup, or the router’s externally reachable address when remote forwarding is deliberately configured. The client port must exactly match the configured RCON TCP port. The V Rising game port and the RCON port are separate settings; opening one does not automatically open the other.
Keep the password private and avoid publishing the endpoint. RCON is an administrative interface, so treat its address, port, and credentials as sensitive operational information.
Connect with mcrcon
Collect the three connection values
- Server address: the host name or IP address bound to RCON and reachable from your workstation.
- RCON port: the TCP value in the
Rcon.Portsetting or its 1.1.x override. - Password: the exact non-empty value configured for RCON.
Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions identify mcrcon as a compatible client. A typical mcrcon invocation supplies those three values as host, port, and password:

Run a harmless test command
After connecting, issue version or time. Both are read-only checks: they confirm authentication and command handling without changing player-facing settings. A response confirms that the client reached the intended server, not merely that the TCP port accepted a connection.
Interpret common connection failures
- Connection refused: the process is not listening on that port, the service is bound to another interface, or a local firewall is rejecting the connection.
- Connection timeout: a router, edge firewall, host firewall, or incorrect address is preventing packets from reaching the server.
- Authentication failure: the password does not match the active launch configuration. Check for an override, quoting issue, or an accidental whitespace change.
- Connected but no useful response: run
helpand thenversionto distinguish a client-session issue from an unsupported command.
Documented V Rising RCON commands
The official 1.0.x table covers server-management operations. Parameters in angle brackets are required; square brackets are optional. The command set is limited compared with the full in-game administration console.

Discovery and read-only checks
Use help with no argument to display the command list. Supplying a command, such as help password, requests information about that command. version is useful after an update to verify which server build is running, while time provides the server’s current time for coordinating maintenance.
Player announcements
announce sends the text to all connected players immediately. Keep operational messages short and unambiguous. For a localized restart notice, use announcerestart with the number of minutes; this is distinct from scheduling the shutdown itself.
Scheduling and cancelling restarts
shutdown schedules a shutdown using a message-times value followed by the announcement text. Because the parameter format is positional, keep the numeric value first and the message afterward. If plans change, cancelshutdown stops the active schedule. Its optional message lets you tell connected players why the previously announced restart will not occur.

Changing public server metadata
name changes the name advertised by the running server, and description changes its description. These are runtime changes; record the intended values in your normal server configuration documentation if they must survive a rebuild or replacement.

password accepts a new value to set or change the server password. Use password --clear to clear it. This is the server’s player-access password, not the RCON password. Do not confuse the two credentials, and communicate a change through a secure channel rather than posting it in a public chat.
RCON administration versus in-game admin commands
RCON is the transport and authentication layer
A successful RCON login proves that the client knows the RCON password and can reach the listener. It does not automatically add a player to the game’s administrator list, and the documented RCON commands do not expose the full set of in-game admin actions.
Add Steam IDs to adminlist.txt
For in-game administrative privileges, Stunlock’s hosting guidance requires the administrator’s Steam ID in adminlist.txt inside the save-data Settings folder. Add the ID using the format expected by that file, save it, and keep the list restricted to trusted administrators. A user can be authorized in the game while having no RCON credentials, or have RCON credentials without being authorized for in-game commands; these are independent decisions.
Enable and authenticate the in-game console
The in-game console must be enabled before console commands can be used. The dedicated-server instructions describe authenticating with the adminauth console command. If an RCON command appears unavailable, first determine whether it belongs to the documented RCON set or to the in-game console workflow; changing the RCON password will not fix a missing Steam ID or disabled console.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
RCON works in either model, but the operational responsibilities differ. A self-hosted server gives you direct control over files, launch arguments, update timing, network binding, and backups. It also leaves you responsible for firewall rules, port forwarding, monitoring, recovery, and uptime.

Choose self-hosting when you need file-level control, private network placement, or custom update and backup policies. A managed host is worth evaluating when you want a hosted RCON server with less responsibility for hardware, firewalls, monitoring, and recovery. Before committing, verify that the service supports the V Rising version you run, exposes the RCON settings you need, and documents its backup and restore process.

The server starts, but RCON is closed
- Confirm

Local connections work, remote connections fail
- Test the server’s private address from the same network first.
- Confirm the host firewall allows inbound TCP on the selected port.
- If remote access is intentional, verify the router forwards that TCP port to the correct private IP.
- Check whether
BindAddressrestricts listening to an interface that remote clients cannot reach. - Remove unnecessary internet exposure instead of opening additional ports indiscriminately.
The configuration file is rejected
- Restore the backup and reapply only the RCON block.
- Check quotes, braces, commas, and duplicate
Rconproperties. - Remove comments and trailing commas, which are not valid JSON.
- Confirm that the account launching the server is reading the file you edited.
Commands do not behave as expected
- Run
helpto confirm the command is in the active RCON set. - Use the documented parameter order, especially for
shutdown. - Remember that
passwordchanges the player-access password, not the RCON credential. - For game-admin actions, complete the separate Steam-ID, console-enable, and
adminauthsetup.
Operational checklist for administrators
- Back up

- Keep RCON credentials separate from the player password and restrict both to trusted administrators.
- Maintain
adminlist.txtand in-game console settings separately for game-admin commands. - Record any runtime name, description, or password changes in your server operations notes so a rebuild does not unexpectedly revert them.
