To become an administrator on a V Rising dedicated server, add your Steam ID to <PersistentDataPath>/Settings/adminlist.txt (one ID per line), enable Console Enabled in Options > General, open the console with the tilde/backtick key, and run adminauth. The authorization applies to the current game session. From there you can use documented moderation commands such as kick, banuser, bancharacter, banned, and unban. This guide explains the files, commands, RCON limits, ports, startup process, backups, and fixes for the problems administrators encounter most often.

What you need before using V Rising admin commands
This procedure is for the PC dedicated server, not a private world hosted directly from a player client. You need access to the server’s persistent data directory and the Steam ID of every person who should receive administrator permissions. Stunlock Studios’ dedicated-server instructions identify the allowlist file as <PersistentDataPath>/Settings/adminlist.txt. Put one Steam ID on each line; do not combine IDs on one line or add decorative punctuation.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Dedicated server access: You must be able to edit the server’s files or use a host control panel that exposes them.
- Console enabled in the client: The player who will authenticate must turn on Console Enabled under Options > General.
- Correct Steam ID: Use the ID associated with the account that will connect. A different account will not inherit the permission.
- Current session: After reconnecting, run
adminauthagain if the session no longer has administrative status.
Stunlock says an ID can be added to adminlist.txt without restarting the server. If the permission does not appear immediately, confirm that you edited the persistent Settings directory actually used by the running process, then reconnect and authenticate again.
How to become an admin, step by step
- Stop and identify the correct data location when making broader changes. For an admin-list edit alone, Stunlock documents that a restart is not required. For other configuration work, use the server’s configured persistent path rather than the installation defaults.
- Open the persistent Settings directory. Navigate to
<PersistentDataPath>/Settings/. The file you need isadminlist.txt. Create it if your installation has not generated one. - Add the Steam ID. Enter the administrator’s Steam ID on its own line. Save the file as plain text with the exact filename
adminlist.txt; do not accidentally createadminlist.txt.txt. - Join the server with the matching account. The allowlist entry authorizes that Steam account, not a character name or an IP address.
- Enable the client console. In the game, choose Options > General, set Console Enabled to on, and return to the game.
- Open the console. Press the tilde/backtick key (the key is usually above Tab, although keyboard layouts can vary).
- Authenticate. Enter
adminauthwithout a slash and submit it. Administrative commands are available only after this step succeeds. - Check the command list. Run
listto display commands exposed by the build currently running. This is the safest way to detect changes after a game or server update.
If adminauth reports that you are not authorized, the usual causes are a wrong Steam ID, an incorrectly named file, editing a different server’s Settings directory, or connecting with another Steam account. Correct the file, reconnect, and run adminauth again.

V Rising console command reference
Commands are entered directly in the in-game console, without a leading slash. The table separates commands documented by Stunlock from convenience or debug commands reported by community references. The latter can change or disappear, so verify them with list on the server’s current build before relying on them.
| Command | Use | Reliability and notes |
|---|---|---|
adminauth |
Authorizes the current player session after the player’s Steam ID is in adminlist.txt. |
Documented by Stunlock. Re-run after reconnecting when necessary. |
list |
Displays commands available to the running server/client combination. | Documented in the official hosting guidance; use it to check version-sensitive commands. |
kick |
Removes a connected player. | Documented moderation command. Follow the syntax shown by the current console help. |
banuser |
Bans a user account. | Documented by Stunlock. The resulting ban is recorded in banlist.txt. |
bancharacter |
Bans a character. | Documented by Stunlock; use the current build’s displayed argument format. |
banned |
Shows the server’s banned entries. | Documented by Stunlock and useful for checking whether a moderation action exists. |
unban |
Removes a ban. | Documented by Stunlock. Confirm the exact entry with banned first. |
teleporttoplayer |
Community-reported convenience command for moving to a player. | Not part of the limited official list cited by Stunlock; verify availability and syntax with list. |
give |
Community-reported item/resource command. | Debug-oriented and version-sensitive. Use only on a server where you have authority and test on a backup world. |
Moderating a player safely
Use kick for a temporary removal when no persistent sanction is needed. Use banuser when the account should be blocked, and bancharacter when the sanction must target a character. After a ban, run banned to verify that the intended entry is present. If you made a mistake, use unban with the identifier and format shown by the current console.
Console-created bans are written to banlist.txt. Stunlock also says that file can be edited manually, but take a backup before hand-editing it and preserve the format generated by the server. A manual edit that removes the wrong line can unintentionally restore access.
Why a command may suddenly stop working
Command names and debug availability can change between builds. A command copied from an old guide may no longer exist, may require a different argument, or may be restricted to a different context. Run list on the live server, and treat the command list shown there as authoritative for that installation. Do not add a slash, and make sure adminauth succeeded in the same session.
Server configuration files and the persistent data path
V Rising uses two principal JSON configuration files, and confusing them is a common cause of settings being ignored:
| File | Controls | Safe editing approach |
|---|---|---|
ServerHostSettings.json |
Hosting and network settings, including ports, bind behavior, RCON, server name, and related host options. | Use a local override in the server’s persistent data rather than changing installation defaults. |
ServerGameSettings.json |
Gameplay rules and world/server-play settings. | Keep a copy of the active file before changing values, and edit the persistent override. |
Stunlock says the default files are in VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/, but recommends local override files instead of modifying those defaults. Updates can replace installation files, erasing your edits or creating mismatches between servers.

This parameter determines the Settings and Saves subfolders and is especially important when several servers share one machine: each instance can then have separate configuration, admin, ban, and save data. After changing the parameter, verify that the process is reading the intended directory before troubleshooting permissions or commands.

RCON: what remote administration can and cannot do
RCON is separate from the in-game console. It lets an external RCON client send a deliberately limited set of server-management commands without joining the game. It does not automatically expose every command available after adminauth.
In ServerHostSettings.json, Stunlock documents this structure:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match"Rcon": {
"Enabled": true,
"Password": "use-a-strong-password",
"Port": 25575
}
The password is required. The example port is 25575, and Stunlock says it can be changed to any valid TCP port. If you change it, configure the RCON client and firewall rule to use the same value. Do not reuse a player password, publish the password in a script repository, or expose RCON broadly to the internet when a restricted firewall rule will do.
| RCON command | Typical purpose |
|---|---|
help |
Display RCON help. |
announce |
Send an announcement to connected players. |
announcerestart |
Announce an upcoming restart. |
shutdown |
Shut down the server. |
cancelshutdown |

description |
Read or manage server-description metadata. |
password |
Read or manage the server password through RCON where supported. |
version |

time |
Report server time information. |
Use RCON for announcements, planned restarts, shutdown control, and basic metadata. For player kicks, bans, teleportation, item commands, or other in-game administration, use the authenticated in-game console unless the current official documentation explicitly adds that action to RCON.
Ports, firewall rules, and server visibility
Stunlock’s settings reference defines Port as the UDP port for game traffic and QueryPort as the UDP port used by the Steam server list. Its examples are game port 27015 and query port 27016; these are examples, not values you should assume. Read the actual values in your active ServerHostSettings.json.
| Connection goal | Ports to allow or forward | Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Players connect directly by address | The configured game Port. |
UDP |
| Server appears in the public/server browser | The configured game Port and QueryPort. |
UDP |
| Remote RCON administration | The configured RCON port, such as 25575. |
TCP |
For an internet-listed server, forward both configured UDP ports through the router and permit the server executable through the host firewall. For a direct connection, Stunlock says forwarding only the game port is sufficient. A firewall rule that allows the wrong executable, wrong local address, or wrong protocol will produce the same timeout as a missing router rule.
- Read
Port,QueryPort, and any bind-address setting from the active host configuration. - Create inbound firewall rules for the configured UDP game and query ports when browser listing is required.
- Forward those same UDP ports from the router to the machine running
VRisingServer.exe. - For RCON, allow only the configured TCP port and preferably restrict its source addresses.
- Test from outside the host’s local network. A local test can succeed even when the router’s internet forwarding is wrong.
Do not publish a private bind address as the public connection address. If players can connect by direct address but cannot find the server in the browser, check the query-port rule and whether the server is bound to the intended network interface.
The technically supported maximum for MaxConnectedUsers is 128 in Stunlock’s current 1.1.x PC server documentation. That is a configuration ceiling, not a promise of performance, latency, or uptime at that population.
Installing and starting the dedicated server
Stunlock states that the V Rising Dedicated Server application is required for dedicated hosting and is available in Steam’s Tools section. The Steam Library’s Launch button may open a documentation link instead of starting the process. Start VRisingServer.exe directly from the installation directory.
- In Steam, filter the Library for Tools and install V Rising Dedicated Server.
- Open the installation directory and locate
VRisingServer.exe. - Make a working copy of
start_server_example.bat. - Edit the copy to set your launch parameters, including a unique
-persistentDataPathwhen hosting multiple instances. - Use the copied batch file or another process manager to start the executable, rather than relying on the example file as your permanent configuration.
- After an update, check the working copy and paths again. Stunlock warns that the example file can be reverted by updates.
Set the server’s name in your copied startup/configuration arrangement, then confirm that the process creates or reads the expected persistent Settings and Saves directories. A server that starts with a new world or default name is often running with a different persistent path than the one you edited.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, launch parameters, firewall rules, console access, backups, and update timing. It also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, router configuration, security, save recovery, and monitoring.
Stunlock’s hosting guide names PocketHost as a managed option. Its interface provides status, basic settings, logs, configuration files, restart and update controls, and permission management. Those features can remove much of the server-maintenance work, but you should verify current pricing, available regions, save-retention policy, player limits, RCON availability, and terms before committing.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted dedicated server | Managed V Rising hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install the Steam Tools application, create configuration, and configure firewall/router rules yourself. | Provider supplies a control panel and server provisioning; exact setup varies. |
| File and console access | Direct access to JSON files, text lists, launch scripts, and the in-game console. | Often exposed through a panel, but the available files and console features depend on the provider. |
| Updates and restarts | You choose the schedule and must perform or automate the work. | PocketHost’s listed controls include restart and update actions; confirm the current implementation. |
| Backups and retention | You design and verify your own backup process. | Retention and restore options are provider-specific and must be checked before purchase. |
| Network exposure | You own firewall, router forwarding, bind-address, and RCON security. | The provider handles infrastructure, while you still need strong credentials and safe permissions. |
| Geographic latency | Depends on your upload connection and the host location. | Depends on the provider’s available regions; choose the region nearest most players. |
| Cost and guarantees | Hardware, power, bandwidth, and administration are your costs. | Current prices and service-level guarantees are not established here; check the provider’s current terms. |
Saves, retention, and recovery
Configuration changes, mods, migrations, and updates can make a save difficult to recover. Copy the complete save directory before changing settings, installing modifications, or moving the world to another machine. Store at least one copy outside the server host so a disk failure or mistaken deletion does not remove every copy.

Stunlock documents two automatic-save controls:
AutoSaveSmartKeepretains selected saves across defined time windows.AutoSaveCountremoves older saves after that retention evaluation.
These options are retention mechanisms, not a substitute for an independent backup. Before editing either value, copy the existing save directory and record which persistent path the server uses. During a restore, stop the server first, preserve the failed copy for diagnosis, restore the known-good directory, and start the server only after the file copy is complete.
Troubleshooting checklist
adminauth says you are not an administrator
- Confirm the Steam ID belongs to the account currently connected.
- Check that the filename is exactly
adminlist.txtand that each ID occupies its own line. - Verify that the file is under the active
<PersistentDataPath>/Settings/, not the installation’s default Settings folder. - Reconnect and run
adminauthagain after correcting the file. - Make sure Console Enabled is on under Options > General.
The console opens, but a command is unknown
Run list and use the spelling and syntax shown by the current build. Remove any leading slash. Community-reported commands such as teleporttoplayer and give are not guaranteed across versions.
Players cannot connect directly
- Compare the address and game port with the active
ServerHostSettings.json. - Allow
VRisingServer.exethrough the local firewall. - Forward the configured game
Portas UDP to the correct internal host. - Check that the server is bound to the intended interface and that the router forwards to the machine actually running the process.
The server is reachable by address but missing from the browser
Confirm that the configured QueryPort is forwarded and allowed as UDP. Direct connections use the game port, while browser discovery also depends on the query port.
RCON will not connect
- Verify
"Enabled": true, the exact password, and the configured TCP port. - Ensure the RCON client is using the same port as
ServerHostSettings.json. - Check a firewall rule restricted to that TCP port and, where possible, trusted source addresses.
- Use
helpafter connecting; an RCON client cannot invoke every in-game admin command.
Settings appear to reset or a new world loads
Look for a changed launch script, a reverted start_server_example.bat, or a missing -persistentDataPath. Updates can replace the example batch file and installation defaults. Re-establish a working copy and point it at the persistent directory containing your intended Settings and Saves folders.
A moderation action affected the wrong player
Use banned to inspect current entries, compare the identifier carefully, and use unban only after confirming the exact entry. Keep a pre-edit copy of banlist.txt so you can recover from a manual-edit mistake.
Operational practices that prevent avoidable outages
- Keep a short record of the server’s persistent path, game port, query port, RCON port, and the Steam IDs in
adminlist.txt. - Use a strong, unique RCON password and limit its network exposure.
- Test an admin login after every server update; command availability can change.
- Back up the complete save directory before migrations, configuration changes, or mod installation.
- Maintain a working copy of the startup batch file instead of editing the update-prone example file.
- When multiple instances share a host, assign each one a separate persistent path so admins, bans, settings, and saves cannot cross over.
- For a public server, document whether players should use the browser or a direct address, since the required port forwarding differs.
The dependable workflow is simple: allowlist the Steam ID, authenticate with adminauth, use list to confirm the live command set, keep host and game settings in persistent overrides, forward the right UDP ports, and protect independent save backups. RCON is useful for remote announcements and controlled restarts, but it is intentionally narrower than the in-game administrator console.
