If V Rising rejects a password, the password itself is only one possible cause. On a dedicated server, the value comes from the active ServerHostSettings.json unless a VR_PASSWORD environment variable or -password launch argument overrides it. Editing an inactive copy, leaving malformed JSON, connecting to a different server instance, or trying to join an offline or Unknown Status server will all look like a bad password. Find the configuration the running process actually reads, remove conflicting overrides, validate the JSON, restart the server, and then test the intended endpoint.

What a V Rising password error usually means
A V Rising server password is enforced by the server, not by a setting on each player’s computer. For a Steam dedicated server, Stunlock’s 1.1.x instructions define the password in ServerHostSettings.json. The same value can be supplied or replaced by the VR_PASSWORD=<password> environment variable or a -password "<password>" launch argument.

That creates four common failure patterns:
- You edited a template, old save, or different installation instead of the file used by the running process.
- An environment variable or launch argument supplies another password after you edit the JSON.
- The JSON is malformed, so the server cannot load its settings and may show Unknown Status or disappear.
- The client is contacting an offline, stale, or different server. A correct password cannot make that instance available.
The reliable fix is therefore a configuration-and-connection check, not repeated guesses at the same password.
First identify how the world is hosted
The place where you change the password depends on the hosting model. Use this comparison before opening files:

For Steam’s dedicated server, Stunlock’s documentation identifies Steam AppID 1829350. On Windows, the settings directory is under the server data directory; the exact location depends on how the server was installed and launched. Do not assume that a file found by searching the disk is the active one.
Hosting choice also changes who controls the fix. A local world puts the game UI and save folder in your hands. A self-hosted server gives you control over the process, command line, firewall, and files, but you must maintain uptime and networking. A rented service can reduce local port-forwarding and availability work, while adding provider-specific panels, restart behavior, billing, and terms. In every model, identify the authority that writes the live configuration before making repeated edits.

Local private world
- Start V Rising and open the Load Game menu.
- Select the world that players are trying to join.
- Choose Go to Directory. This opens the save folder associated with that world.
- Back up the folder before changing any JSON file.
- Make the password change in the files belonging to that save, then close and relaunch the world.
This route avoids editing a global template while the game continues to load a different save folder. If several worlds have similar names, compare the folder’s modification time with the world you just loaded and keep a separate backup for each world.
Steam dedicated server
- Locate the dedicated-server installation associated with Steam AppID
1829350. - Identify the server’s persistent-data and save locations. The launch configuration may specify them explicitly.
- Inspect the command or script that starts the process, including
-persistentDataPathand-saveName. - Open the
ServerHostSettings.jsonin the resulting active data path, not merely a default or template copy. - Record the file path, make a backup, and stop the server before saving edits.
Some installations contain a default settings file, a file inside a save folder, and user overrides. The process reads the path selected by its launch configuration. If a hosting panel starts the server, the panel may generate or replace the file during a restart; make the edit there instead of changing a disposable local copy.
When two installations are present, check the executable path, working directory, service definition, and the account running the process. A file owned by one installation may appear correct while a service launches another installation with its own persistent-data path. Note the exact path in your troubleshooting record so a later restart does not silently switch instances.
Check the password and every override
Inspect Password in JSON
Open the active ServerHostSettings.json and find the Password property. Stunlock describes this setting as text that can be set or left empty. Ensure the value is inside quotation marks and that the surrounding JSON remains valid. Save the file only after confirming that the edited copy is the one selected by the server’s data path and save name.

JSON accepts quoted property names and values; it does not accept explanatory comments. Preserve unrelated settings and change only the value needed for the test.
Search the launch command and environment
Look at the script, shortcut, service definition, container settings, or panel startup command that launches the server. Remove or correct a conflicting -password argument. Also inspect the process environment for VR_PASSWORD. Either source can override the value you typed in the JSON, so keeping all three values is an invitation to test the wrong password.

Check for copied startup scripts, scheduled tasks, and container compose files as well as the shortcut you normally click. A panel may display one value while its startup template injects another. If the panel has a password field, treat it as the authority and allow the panel to rewrite the file instead of editing generated files behind its back.
For a clean diagnosis, use one source only: remove the temporary launch and environment overrides, put the intended value in the active JSON, save it, and restart the process completely. If your host requires a panel field, use that field as the single authority instead.

Restart rather than merely reconnect
Close the dedicated-server process or stop the local world, wait for it to exit, and start it again. A client reconnecting to an already-running process will not cause that process to reread a changed file. After the restart, verify that the server name, address, and other identifying details match the instance you edited.
Allow the process enough time to finish startup before testing. Record the restart time, visible status, and the endpoint used by the client. This makes it easier to tell whether a friend is seeing a fresh listing or a stale entry cached from an earlier process.
Repair malformed JSON before testing a password
Manual edits can break JSON with a missing comma, brace, quotation mark, or other formatting error. Stunlock’s guidance for Cannot Connect to Server, or Unknown Server Status says that manually edited ServerHostSettings.JSON or ServerGameSettings.JSON files are a likely cause of an unreadable or Unknown Status server.
Use a safe repair sequence
- Stop the server and copy the entire settings and save folders to a separate backup location.
- Open the edited file in a JSON-aware editor or compare it with a known-good copy from the same installation.
- Repair punctuation and quotation errors without changing unrelated settings.
- If you cannot identify the mistake, restore the backup or replace the damaged settings file with a known-good file, then reapply changes one at a time.
- Start the server and confirm that it reaches a normal listed or reachable state before testing the password.
Do not delete the save as a first response. A settings reset is reversible when backed up; deleting world data may not be. Keep the original damaged file in a separate location if support may need to inspect it, and never overwrite your only backup with a repaired copy.
Know what Steam verification can and cannot repair
Steam’s Verify integrity of game files can repair global installation files, including files under VRISING_DataStreamingAssetsSettings. Stunlock states that server settings stored in save folders cannot be regenerated by verifying game-file integrity. If the damaged file is in the active save folder, restore or repair that file directly instead of relying on verification.
Verification is useful after an installation file is missing or damaged, but it does not select the correct save, remove a launch override, repair a firewall, or change a provider panel’s generated configuration. Run it only after preserving save data and only as one part of the diagnosis.

Separate password failure from server or network failure
Use the server’s visible state as a branch in the diagnosis:
- Not listed: confirm that the process is running, the client is looking at the intended region or listing, and the server’s listing flags are configured.
- Unknown Status: treat configuration corruption, a failed startup, or an unreachable endpoint as the primary suspect; a password change alone will not fix it.
- Listed but direct connection fails: check the address and port, firewall rules, port forwarding, and whether the server process is listening on the endpoint being used.
- Password prompt appears and rejects a value: recheck the active file,
VR_PASSWORD, and-passwordfor that exact process, then restart. - Friends see a server but cannot join: make sure they are selecting the same listing or direct endpoint rather than an old entry with a similar name.
A password prompt proves only that a reachable instance requested authentication; it does not prove that the instance is the one you edited. Conversely, no prompt may indicate a listing, startup, or endpoint problem rather than incorrect credentials.

Dedicated servers can use ListOnEOS and/or ListOnSteam. Confirm the flags appropriate to the listing your players are using. Community advice about exact paths or enabling both flags can be useful as a troubleshooting clue, but launch methods and game versions change those paths; treat such advice as a hypothesis and verify it against the active command and current server behavior.
Also confirm that client and server builds are current and compatible. A stale process can remain visible while rejecting connections for reasons unrelated to the password. Update or restart deliberately, then recheck the server name, status, and endpoint rather than assuming an update changed only the password behavior.
Confirm the endpoint and instance
Compare the address, port, server name, and startup time with the machine or panel you edited. If multiple V Rising processes or installations exist, stop the extras and launch one known instance. A successful password test against the wrong process gives a misleading result, especially when two worlds use similar names.
Ask one friend to remove an old favorite or saved entry temporarily and search again, or provide the direct endpoint you have verified. Have the host test locally and the friend test remotely; different results help separate a local configuration issue from firewall, forwarding, or listing behavior.

Use a controlled reset when configuration sources conflict
A controlled reset isolates the password from unrelated changes while preserving the world:
- Stop the server or close the local world.
- Back up the save folder and every settings file you plan to touch.
- Temporarily remove custom
-passwordarguments and theVR_PASSWORDenvironment variable. - Replace a malformed settings file with a known-good copy for that installation, or repair it in a JSON-aware editor.
- Start the server with no custom password and test listing or direct connectivity using the host and one client.
- Stop it again, add the password in exactly one authority (the active JSON, the panel field, or the documented launch mechanism), and restart.
- Test from the same endpoint your friends use. Record the result and the server status after each change.
If the server works without a password but fails immediately after adding one, inspect the exact source you changed and confirm that no second source is still supplying a different value. If it fails even without a password, return to JSON, startup, listing, firewall, and endpoint checks rather than changing the password repeatedly.

Change one variable per restart. Do not simultaneously rename the server, change ports, replace both settings files, and alter listing flags; that destroys the evidence needed to identify the cause. Once the password works, reintroduce optional changes one at a time and keep a dated backup of the known-good configuration.
Choose a remedy by control and persistence
When deciding whether to edit a file, a launch script, or a provider panel, compare four practical factors:
- Hosting model: local, self-hosted dedicated, and rented instances expose different files and network controls.
- Configuration authority: use the in-game UI for a local world, the active JSON and process environment for self-hosting, or the provider’s panel when it generates the server.
- Persistence: a change made in a disposable template may vanish at restart, while a change made in the active save or panel should survive the provider’s normal restart process.
- Evidence: prefer a remedy that leaves a clear status, log entry, and reproducible endpoint for the next test.
A rented host may reduce local networking and uptime work, but it can impose provider-specific restart controls, file permissions, backup policies, and terms. Before moving a world, confirm how the provider handles save imports, password fields, backups, and support logs. Migration is not a substitute for proving which setting source is wrong on the current instance.

When the issue survives a clean restart and controlled reset, provide evidence instead of only reporting “wrong password.” Stunlock’s log guidance identifies the following as useful:
- The exact error or status shown by the client, including Unknown Status if present.
- The active
ServerHostSettings.jsonandServerGameSettings.jsonafter removing any secrets you do not want to share. - The launch command, including
-persistentDataPath,-saveName, and any password-related argument or environment variable. - Server logs and the time of the failed connection attempt.
- The relevant save files, a DxDiag report, and crash dumps when startup or crashes are involved.
Do not publish a live password in a forum or support ticket. Redact the value while preserving the property name, the presence of an override, and the surrounding syntax. Include the hosting model, operating system, game and server versions, endpoint type, and the steps that reproduce the failure.
On Windows, player and save data are under %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRising. Can a malformed JSON file cause a password problem?
Yes. Missing commas, braces, or quotation marks can prevent settings from loading, producing Unknown Status, an unreadable listing, or a failed startup. Back up first, repair or restore the file, and verify normal connectivity before testing authentication.
Why can my friends see the server but not join?
They may be using an old listing, the wrong address or port, or an instance different from the one you edited. Confirm the endpoint, listing flags, firewall and forwarding rules, server status, and client/server builds.
Will Steam Verify integrity fix my server settings?
It can repair global installation files, including files under VRISING_DataStreamingAssetsSettings. It cannot regenerate server settings stored in save folders, so those files must be repaired or restored directly.
Should I delete the save and start over?
No. Deleting the save can destroy the world and is unnecessary for a password diagnosis. Back up the save and settings, then use a known-good settings file or a controlled reset.
