Stop the server, identify its active -persistentDataPath, edit the persistent Settings files, validate the JSON, remove conflicting overrides, and start the server again.

This guide applies to dedicated servers and explains the related private/LAN case. It also covers settings that may not change on an existing world, recovery from malformed files, and the checks that distinguish a configuration problem from a game-world limitation.

Why V Rising appears to ignore a settings change
V Rising does not read one universal configuration file. The dedicated server loads shipped defaults first and then looks for local override files. Several locations and mechanisms can therefore affect the value you see in game:
- You may be editing a private/LAN world while checking a dedicated server, or the other way around.
- The server may use a custom persistent-data directory rather than the Windows default.
- A second
ServerHostSettings.jsonorServerGameSettings.jsonin the selected save folder can override the copy in the baseSettingsfolder. - A
GameSettingsPresetor difficulty preset can control the gameplay key you changed. - Command-line options can override host settings such as the name, ports, save name, and persistent-data path.
- The server may still be running. Editing JSON while the process is active does not apply the change to that running instance.
- Invalid JSON can be ignored or can damage parts of the server configuration and the Continue-game interface.
- Some settings are documented as not updating after a world has already been created.
Changing the file is therefore only one part of the fix. You must establish which process is running, which directory it uses, which copy has priority, and whether the setting is mutable for the existing world.

First identify the world and server you are changing
Private or LAN world
A private or LAN game is hosted from the V Rising game client. Its configuration is associated with the local world and the client’s hosting interface rather than with a separate VRisingServer.exe process. If you launch a world from the game menu, do not assume that editing a dedicated-server folder will affect it.
Close the hosted game before changing files, make the change through the relevant host controls where available, and launch the world again. If the setting exists only in dedicated-server JSON, it may not be exposed in the same way for a client-hosted world.

A dedicated server runs VRisingServer.exe, normally from a shortcut, batch file, service manager, or hosting panel. The startup command is the authoritative place to discover the active data directory and any command-line overrides. Find the exact shortcut or batch file that starts the instance you are joining; changing files beside a different installation will have no effect.
Find the active persistent-data path
On Windows, the default dedicated-server root is:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServer
Without a custom path, the persistent settings directory is:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings
Many dedicated-server setups explicitly use a relative path such as:
-persistentDataPath .save-dataWith that argument, the server reads settings from save-dataSettings and stores worlds under save-dataSaves, relative to the working directory used to start the server. The path is not necessarily the directory containing the executable.

- Open the shortcut target, batch file, service definition, or hosting-panel startup command.
- Search for
-persistentDataPath. Record the full path if it is absolute; resolve a relative path from the server process’s working directory. - If the argument is absent, use the Windows default root above.
- Inside that root, confirm that
SettingsandSavescontain the files and world data for the instance you actually run.
Stunlock Studios recommends a custom persistent path when appropriate, and it is required when multiple servers share one host if you want their settings and saves separated. Two instances pointed at the same path can make a correct edit appear to be lost because you are observing the other server’s files.
Know which file controls the value

Put lasting customizations in the persistent Settings folder. Files under VRisingServer_DataStreamingAssetsSettings are installation defaults and can be replaced by an update. Editing them can also make it difficult to tell whether a later change came from your override or from a newly installed default.
Fix settings that are not changing: a complete workflow
1. Stop the server completely
Use the server console’s shutdown command, the hosting panel’s stop control, or close the dedicated-server process. Wait until VRisingServer.exe has exited before touching JSON. A restart button that only reloads a panel may not terminate the process cleanly; verify in Task Manager or the provider’s status view.
Keep a backup of the current settings and save data before editing. Copy the entire active Settings directory and the relevant save folder to a separate location, preserving the original filenames.
2. Inspect startup parameters before editing
Read the complete launch command and note these arguments if present:
-serverName-gamePort-queryPort-saveName-persistentDataPath
These command-line values can override corresponding entries in ServerHostSettings.json. If the batch file specifies a server name or port, changing only the JSON value will not change what clients see or which port is listening. Edit the launch command, remove the conflicting argument, or make the JSON agree with it, then restart.

3. Open the settings directory that this process uses
Follow the path from -persistentDataPath rather than relying on a search result. For a command such as -persistentDataPath .save-data, inspect:
save-dataSettingsServerHostSettings.json
save-dataSettingsServerGameSettings.json
save-dataSavesIf no custom path exists, inspect the corresponding files under %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings. Check the file’s modified time and contents so you know it belongs to the running instance.

4. Edit the appropriate JSON file
Use ServerHostSettings.json for infrastructure and administration values, and ServerGameSettings.json for gameplay rules. Preserve the existing JSON structure:
- Use double quotes around property names and string values.
- Separate properties with commas, but do not leave a trailing comma before a closing brace.
- Keep numbers as numbers and Boolean values as
trueorfalse, not quoted text, when the existing schema uses those types. - Change only the intended key until the server is working again; small edits make mistakes easier to isolate.
Do not edit the installation’s StreamingAssets copy as your only change. If you have already changed that file, copy the intended values into the persistent override file and leave the shipped file available for repair.

Look inside the folder for the save selected by -saveName. A ServerHostSettings.json or ServerGameSettings.json stored there can take priority over the base Settings copy. This is a common reason a correctly edited file appears to do nothing.
Compare both copies. If the save-folder file contains the old value, either edit that active copy or remove it so the base override can apply. Back it up before moving or renaming it; deleting an unknown configuration file without a recovery copy makes diagnosis harder.
6. Check presets and difficulty settings
A GameSettingsPreset or difficulty preset can supply a group of gameplay values. When a preset controls the key you changed, the preset may reapply its value during loading. Inspect the preset-related entries in ServerGameSettings.json and any settings exposed by the server interface.
To test an individual value, use a custom configuration in which the preset no longer controls that key, change only the target property, and restart. Record the original preset and settings first so you can restore them if the test does not help.

7. Validate the JSON before starting
On Windows PowerShell, this command parses a file without changing it:
Get-Content .ServerGameSettings.json -Raw | ConvertFrom-Json | Out-NullRun the equivalent command for ServerHostSettings.json, using the full path to the active file. A syntax error identifies a missing comma, brace, quote, or other formatting problem. Correct the file from your backup rather than guessing at a damaged section.

Malformed settings can make the file unreadable and can also break the Continue-game UI. If the parser reports an error, do not proceed to gameplay testing until both JSON files parse successfully.

Start the server with the same shortcut, batch file, service, or panel you inspected. Allow it to finish loading before joining. A hosting service may queue a restart or apply an edit only after the process has stopped and started again; check its status and startup log rather than assuming the button completed.
9. Verify the result in the right place
For a host setting, verify the server name, port, player limit, save selection, or other observable host behavior. For a gameplay setting, test the relevant action in the world after joining. Keep the edited file and the startup command together so you can compare them if the value reverts after an update or another administrator changes the server.
If behavior still does not match, inspect the startup log for the persistent path, save name, JSON errors, and preset information. The objective is to establish which file was loaded, not merely whether a file exists somewhere on disk.
Settings that may not change on an existing world
Even with the correct file, valid JSON, and a complete restart, the V Rising Wiki documents several settings that may not update after world creation:

The documented workaround is to configure a custom preset or create a new server/world, but the wiki labels that workaround as not fully tested. Treat a new world as a last resort: make a complete save backup, preserve the old settings, and confirm that losing existing progress is acceptable before trying it.
Do not use this limitation as the first explanation. Rule out the wrong persistent path, save-folder override, preset, command-line parameter, invalid JSON, and incomplete restart first. Those causes are reversible; recreating a world is not.

Restore a known-good backup
Stop the server, replace the damaged file with the backup made before editing, and start the server again. If only one file is suspect, restore that file first rather than replacing the entire save. Confirm that the restored JSON parses before launching.

Repair a global installation settings file
When a settings file in the global installation area is corrupted, Stunlock Studios advises moving or renaming it and then using Steam’s “Verify Integrity of Game Files” function. Verification can restore installation files that belong to the game package.
Handle files inside a save folder separately
Steam verification does not regenerate settings files stored inside a save folder. Restore those from your backup or repair them manually. If a save-folder copy is no longer needed, move it aside rather than deleting it until the server has loaded with the base persistent settings.
After recovery, keep custom values in the persistent data location and maintain dated backups before server updates or bulk configuration changes.
Self-hosted server versus managed hosting
If local overrides repeatedly fail, the key difference between self-hosting and managed hosting is not the game rules themselves but your access to the files and restart process.

Before moving a world to another host, copy the save and settings, record the exact -saveName and persistent path, and verify that the destination loads the same world. A panel that accepts a JSON upload but silently regenerates files at restart will reproduce the original problem.

What the documentation establishes
Stunlock Studios’ dedicated-server guidance, published June 30, 2022, states that the server loads default files and then looks for local overrides, and explains that -persistentDataPath can customize the location. The V Rising Wiki reference for dedicated-server settings was last modified May 13, 2025 and records the save-folder override behavior and the existing-world limitations listed above. Documentation and file names can change with future game versions, so confirm the paths and startup arguments in the version you are running.
The reliable fix is procedural: identify the actual process, follow its persistent-data path, account for save-folder and preset overrides, validate the JSON, stop and restart fully, and only then investigate whether the world itself prevents the setting from changing.
