To reach the Ashlands in Valheim, sail there—but Iron Gate recommends defeating the Queen in the Mistlands first. Before setting out, check whether your world has already generated the region, consider the risks to builds near the world’s outer rim, and choose a difficulty that suits your current comfort with combat.
What should you do before entering the Ashlands?
Treat the Ashlands as late-game progression. Iron Gate describes it as Valheim’s penultimate biome and advises defeating the Queen in the Mistlands before travelling there: Iron Gate’s Ashlands preparation guidance. The Queen’s dropped item is useful in the Ashlands. If you defeated her before an update and new recipes do not trigger, Iron Gate suggests dropping the item and picking it up again.

The official advice establishes a progression recommendation, not a hard entry gate: it says to defeat the Queen before travelling, but does not say the game prevents earlier access. The Ashlands can be a demanding destination, so the Queen is a sensible readiness milestone rather than a substitute for preparing your character and equipment.
How do you get to the Ashlands?
The Ashlands is accessible only by ship. In the update that introduced the biome, surrounding terrain was lowered and turned into ocean, changing the approach through the world’s southern outer region. Plan on a sea voyage rather than a land route. Iron Gate’s preparation guide describes this access change.

- Keep up the fight: throughout the year, limited time seasonal events bring bigger challenges and even mightier treasures to the endgame of midgard, including new ways to progress and unlockable rewards for use across every game.
Should you use an old world or start a new one?
Your world’s exploration history matters. Iron Gate says new content generates properly in areas that have not previously been explored and recommends starting a new world for the best experience, particularly if much of the Ashlands area was explored before its update. You can bring an older character into a new world.
| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Continue in your existing world | You want to preserve your established world, and the Ashlands region was not previously explored. | Prior exploration can affect how new content generates; check the world’s history before relying on a clean biome layout. |
| Start a new world with your existing character | You want Iron Gate’s recommended best-experience option, especially if the Ashlands region was already explored. | You leave your old world’s builds and progress behind in that world, though you can still return to it. |
There is a separate risk for structures near the changed terrain: player-built structures on ground altered by the update can collapse. Even a spawned building that remains intact may be difficult to reach if its surroundings change. If your existing world has builds near the outer rim, assess them before choosing where to continue. The terrain and generation guidance is from Iron Gate’s March 26, 2024 preparation article.
Do you need to defeat the Queen first?
Iron Gate’s recommendation is yes: defeat the Queen in the Mistlands before travelling to the Ashlands. Its wording is preparation guidance, not a claim that defeating her is a technical access requirement. The Queen’s dropped item also has a role in Ashlands progression; if an older character already has it and recipes fail to appear, try dropping it and picking it up again.

How should you adjust the challenge?
Iron Gate says Valheim becomes harder as you progress. If you are returning after a long break or feel rusty, its guidance is to practise or use World Modifiers to adjust the challenge. The official material does not establish a specific Ashlands weapon, armor set, food loadout, potion recipe, or enemy tactic, so those details should not be treated as universal preparation requirements based on this guidance.
What changed in the current release?
Valheim 1.0 arrived on September 9, 2026. Iron Gate’s release announcement lists broad additions across the game, including the Deep North, equipment, creatures, building pieces, crafting materials, food, mechanics, and achievements. It also notes that enemy spawn chance in the Ashlands was rebalanced; it does not provide an Ashlands item-by-item guide.
The latest patch identified in Iron Gate’s news index for this guide is Valheim 1.0.17, dated October 6, 2026. Its notes include a fix for a rare world-save chunk issue that could erase objects in affected areas. Iron Gate said rollout to all platforms could take a few days, while crossplay remained functional. Check the notes for your platform rather than assuming every version updated on the announcement date.
