What was the April Fools’ 2021 deer claim?
A contemporaneous r/valheim discussion dated April 1, 2021 described a deer as a selectable character, and a commenter attributed the claim to Valheim’s Twitter account. That makes the announcement best understood as an April Fools’ joke—not proof that a playable-deer mode was added.
The original official post was not available to verify. Its precise wording and format are therefore unconfirmed, so the community post’s title should not be treated as a direct quotation from Iron Gate.
Can you play as a deer in unmodded Valheim?
No playable-deer option is established for the base game. The joke about selecting a deer should be kept distinct from the deer that appear as creatures in Valheim and from mods that let players tame or ride them.
Can you ride a deer with mods?
RideableTames
The RideableTames mod listing says deer cannot be tamed in the base game and that using deer this way requires a taming mod. This is an unofficial mod feature, not an in-game character selection.
ElPopeAdventures
A separate ElPopeAdventures mod listing describes deer that can be tamed and ridden, with installation through a mod manager or manually. Check the specific listing for its requirements and installation details; a mod’s availability does not establish that it works with every game version.

What to know before installing a Valheim mod
Iron Gate says Valheim has no official mod support, that creating and using mods is at the user’s own risk, and that compatibility with newer game versions is not guaranteed. Iron Gate has explicitly labeled a different Valheim announcement—about a game mode where players could romance all the bosses—as an April Fools’ joke in an official article published April 28, 2026. That later example provides context for the studio’s use of April Fools’ jokes, but it does not verify the wording or details of the 2021 deer claim.
