What “admin” means on a Valheim dedicated server
Valheim separates server administration from the developer cheats available in a local or player-hosted world. On a dedicated server, your account becomes an admin when its SteamID64 is written to the server’s adminlist.txt file. The game does not use your character name, Steam display name, or the name other players see above your head.

That distinction matters because an account can be a legitimate server admin and still be unable to run god, spawn, or goto on an unmodified dedicated server. Admin rights are primarily for moderation and world management; they are not automatically a developer-cheat permission.
How to make yourself an admin
1. Get your SteamID64
Use the complete SteamID64 associated with the Steam account that will administer the server. Copy the numeric identifier exactly. Do not substitute a character name, a Steam nickname, or a shorter Steam identifier. If several people will administer the server, obtain each person’s SteamID64 separately.

2. Open adminlist.txt
Find the dedicated server’s adminlist.txt file. A self-hosted installation and a managed host can place this file in different save or configuration directories, so use the location documented by your host or server package. If the file does not exist, create a plain-text file with that exact filename; do not save it as adminlist.txt.txt.
3. Add one ID per line
Enter one SteamID64 on each line, with no display names and no comma-separated list. A file for two administrators should have two separate lines:

STEAMID64_FOR_SECOND_ADMINReplace the example text with the real identifiers. Keep the file as plain text and preserve the spelling and capitalization of the filename. Extra spaces or pasted punctuation can prevent an entry from matching.
4. Let the server reload the file
Save the file, then use the server’s normal restart or reload procedure so it reads the updated administrator list. Managed panels often provide a restart button; a self-hosted process may need to be stopped and started again. Connect with the Steam account whose ID you added and test an administrative command after the server is back online.

Opening the Valheim console
The client console is disabled unless you start the game with the -console Steam launch option. In Steam, open Valheim’s Properties, add -console to Launch Options, start the game, connect to the server, and press F5 while connected. If no console appears, confirm that the option is attached to the same installation and account you are using to join the server, then restart the game.
Opening the console does not grant administrator rights by itself. The account still has to be present in the server’s adminlist.txt, and the command must be one the dedicated server accepts.

Commands that work for vanilla dedicated-server admins
The following commands are the useful baseline for a server running without a developer-command mod. Their exact argument format and behavior can change with game updates, so use the command syntax shown by the current Valheim build or your host’s current documentation.

Valheim also exposes world-modifier commands to authorized administrators. These alter rules or world behavior rather than giving a character every developer ability. Because the available modifiers and their syntax are tied to the installed game version, verify the current command list in the build you are running instead of copying an old list unchanged.

Why god, spawn, and goto fail on a vanilla dedicated server
On an unmodified dedicated server, the developer-console cheats commonly associated with single-player Valheim are not available merely because your SteamID64 is in adminlist.txt. In particular, god, spawn, and goto should be expected to fail on a vanilla dedicated server. A message that the command is unknown, unavailable, or ignored is consistent with the server’s design; it does not necessarily mean your admin entry is wrong.
The -console launch option only opens the client console. It does not convert a dedicated server into a player-hosted world and does not silently enable developer commands. Likewise, being able to run kick or save proves that your administrative identity was recognized, not that cheat commands are enabled.
Where full developer cheats are available
Single-player worlds
Single-player is the least complicated place to use developer commands. The world is running locally, so the restrictions and permissions differ from those on a separate dedicated process. Enable the console with -console, enter the world, and use the commands supported by that game version.
Player-hosted sessions
A world hosted directly by a player can also expose developer commands that a vanilla dedicated server refuses. The host’s local session is authoritative for the world, which is why guides that work for a player-hosted game may not translate to a rented or self-hosted dedicated server.

A server-side developer-command mod
Community reports indicate that the third-party mod Server_devcommands can provide fuller developer-command access on a dedicated server, but those reports are lower-confidence than the vanilla command behavior. Such a setup requires the mod on the server and on the connecting client. Installing it on only one side can produce missing commands, connection problems, or a client/server version mismatch.

Back up the world, pin compatible game and mod versions, and test the arrangement with a noncritical copy before using it on a community server. Remove the mod and retest on a clean instance if players can no longer connect.
bannedlist.txt and permittedlist.txt
bannedlist.txt
The banned list blocks the SteamIDs entered in bannedlist.txt. It is an access restriction, separate from the administrator list. A person can be listed as an admin in adminlist.txt and still be unable to join if the same identity is blocked by the banned list, so check both files when an administrator cannot connect.
permittedlist.txt
permittedlist.txt acts as an allowlist for invite-only servers. When that restriction is in use, a player must be permitted in addition to meeting any other server requirements. It is not an administrator file and should not be used as a replacement for adminlist.txt.

Diagnosing common admin and cheat problems
You can join, but moderation commands fail
- Check that the file is named exactly
adminlist.txtand is in the server’s active configuration or save location. - Confirm that the line contains your full SteamID64, not a display name or character name.
- Make sure the server has been restarted or reloaded after the edit.
- Connect with the same Steam account whose ID was entered; a second account on the same computer has a different identity.
- Check whether
permittedlist.txtorbannedlist.txtis preventing the account from entering the intended server.
The F5 console does not open
- Exit Valheim completely.
- Open the game’s Steam Properties and verify
-consoleappears in Launch Options. - Start the game from that Steam installation, join the server, and press F5.
- If the console is still absent, remove and re-enter the option, then restart the client before testing again.
god or spawn says the command is unavailable
First determine the session type. On a vanilla dedicated server, that result is expected. Use a single-player or player-hosted world for ordinary developer-command access, or install a compatible server-side developer-command mod on both server and client. Do not assume that adding yourself to adminlist.txt will change this limitation.

A mod works for the host but not for another player
Compare the mod installation and versions on both sides. The reported dedicated-server approach requires the developer-command mod on the server and the client. A mismatch can look like a permissions problem even when adminlist.txt is correct. Disable the mod on both sides and reconnect to confirm whether the base server still works.

Self-hosted and managed servers
Self-hosting generally gives you direct access to adminlist.txt, bannedlist.txt, permittedlist.txt, the server process, and any mod files. That control makes it easier to apply an emergency ban, test a world backup, or install a server-side mod, but you are responsible for file permissions, restarts, backups, and keeping the game and mods aligned.
A managed host may provide a web panel instead of a visible filesystem. Before renting or moving a world, confirm that the panel lets you edit the administrator, ban, and permitted lists, restart the server, and install the server-side mods you actually need. If a panel offers a text box for admins, enter the same one-ID-per-line SteamID64 format; a field that accepts player names is not proof that the underlying server uses names for permission checks.
Operational practices that prevent lockouts
- Keep a private backup of the three identity files before changing them.
- Record which SteamID64 belongs to each trusted administrator so a display-name change does not cause confusion.
- Give administrative access only to people who need it; every line in
adminlist.txtgrants the same server-admin status. - Use
savebefore maintenance and retain a separate world backup before testing mods or world modifiers. - Test a command on a quiet test world when possible, especially after a game update.
Version and documentation caveats
Command lists, file paths, and permission behavior can change as Valheim updates. One report claims that Valheim 1.0 may alter SteamID handling, but that change has not been independently verified here. Do not migrate an older adminlist.txt procedure into a 1.0 server without checking the current server documentation and confirming the result with a noncritical account.
Guides also disagree about whether devcommands can unlock cheats for dedicated-server admins. The more consistent reading from the Valheim Wiki and community discussions is that vanilla dedicated servers do not provide those cheats; claims to the contrary generally describe single-player, player-hosted sessions, or a modded server. Treat any guide that promises vanilla dedicated-server god mode as version- and setup-specific until you verify it on the exact server build you run.
