Fishing in Valheim starts with a Fishing Rod from Haldor, the correct bait for the fish and biome you are targeting, and enough stamina to finish the reel. Buy the rod for 350 coins, use basic or specialized bait, cast where fish are visible, hook the bite, then reel the fish in before your stamina runs out. Catches can be cooked directly or processed into dishes such as Cooked Fish, Fish Wraps and Fish n’ Bread, depending on the stations and recipes available in your progression.

This guide covers the fishing loop, every bait match currently documented, practical stamina management, and a cooking decision framework for health, stamina and general exploration. The version context is Valheim 1.0, released on September 9, 2026, with Patch 1.0.20 dated October 15, 2026. The 1.0 release added the Deep North and more than 20 new food items, so older guides may not describe the current food or fish roster.

What you need before your first cast
Fishing is not a starting-handcraft activity. You need access to Haldor and enough coins for the equipment and bait he sells. PC Gamer reports the following prices:
| Item | Seller | Cost reported | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing Rod | Haldor | 350 coins | Lets you cast, hook and reel fish. |
| Basic Fishing Bait | Haldor | 10 coins for 20 bait | Used for Meadows Perch and Pike. |
The bait price is a one-time purchase quantity as reported, not a claim that every future patch will use the same bundle. Specialized bait is associated with particular biomes and fish; the complete match list appears below.
Prepare your inventory
- Put the rod on an easily reached hotbar slot.
- Carry the bait you intend to use and select it before casting.
- Eat stamina-rich food before a serious fishing session.
- Carry stamina mead if you have it. PC Gamer specifically recommends stamina food and stamina mead because reeling drains stamina and an empty bar lets the fish escape.
- Leave enough inventory space to pick up catches without interrupting the session.
Do not buy a large quantity of specialized bait until you have confirmed that the target fish is visible and that the water you are using belongs to the bait’s matching biome. This simple check prevents spending rare bait on an empty or unsuitable location.
How to fish in Valheim
The controls use the game’s hook and reel inputs, so the physical key or button depends on your platform and control settings. The actions are consistent across PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch 2.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Equip the rod. Select the Fishing Rod from your hotbar or inventory.
- Select bait. Choose basic bait or the specialized bait that matches your target fish and biome.
- Find visible fish. Aim at water where you can actually see fish. Casting into water with no visible fish is a poor use of bait.
- Cast. Use the rod’s cast input and place the bobber in the fish-bearing water.
- Watch the bobber. When a fish tugs it, press the hook input. A bite is not the same as a landed catch; you must react to the tug.
- Reel steadily. Hold the reel input to bring the fish toward you. Reeling consumes stamina, so monitor the bar rather than holding the input blindly.
- Collect the fish. When it is close enough, pick it up to complete the catch.
If you miss the hook timing, the cast does not become a free attempt: you have spent time and may have consumed bait without receiving a fish. Take a moment to identify the bobber’s movement before pressing the hook input.
Stamina is the real fishing limit
A rod does not guarantee a catch once the fish bites. The reel phase is stamina-limited, and running out of stamina allows the fish to escape. Treat a fishing trip like a short endurance task rather than a purely timing-based minigame.

Before casting
- Use a meal with a strong stamina contribution when you expect repeated casts or a long reel.
- Drink stamina mead before a difficult session if available; waiting until the bar is nearly empty may be too late.
- Begin with a mostly full stamina bar instead of casting immediately after sprinting, swimming or other exertion.
During the reel
- Watch the stamina meter continuously.
- Avoid combining a fishing attempt with unnecessary movement or other stamina-consuming actions.
- If you are fishing from a hazardous shoreline, clear immediate threats first so combat does not interrupt the reel.
Planning a session
Bring more food and mead than the minimum for one fish. A failed hook or an escaped fish can turn a marginal stamina plan into an empty-handed trip. The cost of a few extra supplies is lower than repeatedly returning to Haldor for bait.
Fishing bait and biome matches
The following community-maintained fishing table maps each documented bait type to its target fish. Specialized bait is not interchangeable: use the entry that matches both the species and its biome. Because the table is community-maintained, check later patch notes if Iron Gate changes a fish, bait or biome requirement.
Recommended Free Tools
| Bait | Fish | Target biome or water | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Fishing Bait | Meadows Perch; Pike | Meadows | General early fishing option sold by Haldor. |
| Mossy Fishing Bait | Black Forest Trollfish | Black Forest | Use after entering Black Forest waters and confirming the fish is visible. |
| Sticky Fishing Bait | Swamp Giant Herring | Swamp | Bring stamina support because swamp travel can make a reel harder to finish. |
| Cold Fishing Bait | Frost Caves Tetra | Frost Caves | Match the bait to Frost Caves water before casting. |
| Stingy Fishing Bait | Plains Grouper | Plains | Do not spend this bait in a different biome simply because fish are nearby. |
| Misty Fishing Bait | Mistlands Pufferfish; Anglerfish | Mistlands | One bait type covers both listed Mistlands targets. |
| Hot Fishing Bait | Ashlands Magmafish | Ashlands | Prepare for a dangerous environment before concentrating on the bobber. |
| Heavy Fishing Bait | Ocean Tuna; Coral Cod | Ocean | Use from ocean water where the target fish is visible. |
| Frosty Fishing Bait | Deep North Northern Salmon | Deep North | This reflects the Deep North content introduced with Valheim 1.0. |
How to use the table without wasting bait
- Identify the biome from the shoreline or surrounding terrain.
- Look for the fish itself before selecting a specialized bait.
- Equip only the bait that names that fish and biome.
- Cast into the visible fish-bearing water and reassess if the fish disappears.
The bait list tells you what to use, not that every shoreline in a biome is equally productive. Visibility is your final confirmation before each cast.
Where to catch the named fish
The documented locations are defined by the bait-to-biome matches rather than by a single landmark or coordinate. Use this progression map to decide where to travel:

| Progression setting | Fish to look for | Bait | Why you might target it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Perch and Pike | Basic Fishing Bait | Accessible targets for learning the cast, hook and reel sequence. |
| Black Forest | Trollfish | Mossy Fishing Bait | A biome-specific catch once Black Forest exploration is established. |
| Swamp | Giant Herring | Sticky Fishing Bait | Useful when you are already gathering swamp resources and can protect a fishing spot. |
| Frost Caves | Tetra | Cold Fishing Bait | The listed cold-environment fish target. |
| Plains | Grouper | Stingy Fishing Bait | A Plains option that requires the matching bait. |
| Mistlands | Pufferfish and Anglerfish | Misty Fishing Bait | Two documented fish under one Mistlands bait type. |
| Ashlands | Magmafish | Hot Fishing Bait | A late, hazardous-biome target. |
| Ocean | Tuna and Coral Cod | Heavy Fishing Bait | Targets for ocean expeditions rather than inland ponds. |
| Deep North | Northern Salmon | Frosty Fishing Bait | A 1.0-era target associated with the new northern biome. |
For Tetra, use Cold Fishing Bait in Frost Caves water. For Anglerfish, use Misty Fishing Bait in the Mistlands. Those are the direct answers to the two location questions most often missed by pre-1.0 guides.
From catch to plate: the cooking workflow
Fish serve two purposes: they are catches for collection or decoration, and they are food ingredients. A fish is not automatically the final meal you want. The station and recipe available in your current progression determine whether you cook the catch directly, process it first or combine it with other ingredients.
- Catch and collect the fish. Pick it up when the reel brings it within reach.
- Identify the required processing step. Some recipes use the fish as caught, while others require a prepared ingredient. Use the recipe’s listed station rather than assuming every fish goes on the same fire or cauldron.
- Process the catch at the required station. The broader preparation system can involve cooking and cauldron work; the recipe entry is the authority for the station you have available.
- Cook or combine the ingredient. The documented fish-related dishes include Cooked Fish, Fish Wraps and Fish n’ Bread.
- Store meals for the task ahead. Keep stamina-oriented meals for travel and fishing, health-oriented meals for combat, and balanced choices for ordinary exploration.
Cooked Fish
Cooked Fish is the straightforward destination for a catch when you want an accessible meal rather than a multi-ingredient dish. It fits an early or resource-conscious workflow: catch fish, use the applicable cooking station, and keep the result for routine survival. The exact value of the meal depends on the current game data and should be read from the in-game recipe in your version.
Fish Wraps
Fish Wraps are a prepared recipe rather than a reason to fish without a plan. Make them when you have the additional ingredients and the relevant preparation station unlocked. Their value is best judged alongside your other available meals by the health, stamina and duration figures shown in-game, not by the name alone.

Fish n’ Bread
Fish n’ Bread is another fish-based recipe in the current cooking progression. It can make a catch useful beyond a simple cooked portion when your pantry supports the combination. Check the recipe’s required ingredients and station before committing a limited fish or companion ingredient.
Choosing the best fish food for your goal
There is no universal best fish dish. The correct choice changes with your biome, the danger of the trip, how much stamina you need for casting and reeling, and whether the meal is meant for combat or travel.
| Your goal | Prioritize | Fishing and cooking approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long fishing session | Stamina | Eat a stamina-rich meal and carry stamina mead before casting; favor an accessible fish dish you can produce repeatedly. | Lower health than a combat-focused meal may leave less margin for enemy damage. |
| Combat near a fishing site | Health | Use a health-oriented meal and secure the shoreline before trying to reel. | You may have less stamina for a long cast or repeated attempts. |
| General exploration | Balanced health and stamina | Combine a fish meal with other foods to avoid over-specializing your bar. | It will not maximize either attribute as strongly as a dedicated meal. |
| Early progression | Availability and low cost | Use basic bait for Meadows fish and favor Cooked Fish or another recipe whose ingredients and station you already possess. | Later biome dishes can offer a stronger fit once their ingredients become practical. |
| Late-biome expedition | Logistics and survival margin | Match specialized bait to the destination biome, bring enough stamina support, and prepare the fish dish before leaving a secure base. | Rare bait and extra ingredients make failed casts more expensive. |
Compare meals by the numbers displayed in your current version: health, stamina, duration and ingredient availability. The official game page describes gathering and crafting food as a core survival activity, so the best meal is the one that supports the activity you are actually about to perform.

Early game: learn the loop cheaply
Start with Meadows Perch or Pike and basic bait. Use this stage to learn how quickly the bobber reacts, how much stamina a successful reel consumes and how close the fish must be before pickup. Do not treat early fishing as a requirement for every meal; it is an option that becomes useful when you have the coins, time and visible fish.

Middle game: fish while gathering
When your routes pass through the Black Forest, Swamp, Frost Caves or Plains, carry only the specialized bait for the fish you have confirmed. Fishing can complement an existing resource trip, but it should not distract you from securing the shoreline or carrying enough stamina food.

Late game: plan the expedition around the target
Mistlands, Ashlands, Ocean and Deep North targets require deliberate preparation. Heavy, Hot, Misty and Frosty bait each point to a different environment. Travel with the food and mead needed to complete multiple reels, and process the catch at a prepared base rather than assuming the destination has every cooking station you need.
Common problems and fixes
The bobber never gets a bite
- Confirm that fish are visible before casting.
- Check the biome against the bait table; specialized bait used in the wrong water can waste resources.
- Move to another visible fish-bearing patch rather than repeatedly casting into empty water.
The fish escapes during reeling
- Start the attempt with a fuller stamina bar.
- Eat stamina-rich food and use stamina mead for a planned session.
- Avoid sprinting, swimming or fighting while the reel is active.
The hook input seems not to work
- React to the bobber’s tug, not merely to the fact that it has landed.
- Verify your platform’s hook binding in the control settings.
- Practice on Meadows fish before spending specialized bait.
I caught a fish but cannot make the dish
- Read the recipe for its required preparation station.
- Check whether the fish must be processed before it can be combined.
- Confirm that every companion ingredient is present; Fish Wraps and Fish n’ Bread are not interchangeable with plain Cooked Fish.
I cannot find Tetra or Anglerfish
Tetra is listed with Cold Fishing Bait in Frost Caves. Anglerfish is listed with Misty Fishing Bait in the Mistlands. In both cases, verify the fish is visible in the matching water before casting.
Fish as collection items and food ingredients
Not every catch has to become a meal. Fish can be retained for decoration or collection, while other catches can be routed into the cooking system. Decide before processing if you are completing a display, keeping a specimen or feeding an expedition; once a catch has been converted into a prepared ingredient, it may no longer serve the same decorative purpose.
This dual use is why fishing trips benefit from spare inventory space. You can return with food ingredients without having to abandon a specimen simply because you planned the trip around cooking.
Version notes and keeping the guide current
Valheim 1.0 released on September 9, 2026, for PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, with crossplay. Patch 1.0.20 is dated October 15, 2026, and is the current official patch at the time covered here. The 1.0 notes announce the Deep North and 20+ new food items, so a guide written before 1.0 may omit Northern Salmon, Deep North bait or newer recipes.
Fishing data can change independently of your character’s progression. Before buying a large stock of specialized bait after a future update, compare the in-game recipe and fish information with the latest Iron Gate patch notes. The community-maintained bait table is a useful map, but the current game client takes precedence if a later patch changes a match.
