Valheim Server “Failed to Place All” Error: What It Means

Valheim’s “Failed to place all” line is usually a world-generation warning rather than a crash. Here is how to read the count, verify Online status, and investigate missing vanilla or modded locations safely.

Usually, “Failed to place all” is a world-generation warning, not a server crash. Valheim tried to place a target number of a location type but could not find enough areas that met the location’s biome, terrain, altitude, and spacing rules. If the server finishes generating and reaches Online, you can normally let the message stand.

What the message actually means

Valheim generates locations by searching for candidate areas that satisfy a set of placement rules. Each location type has a requested target, but the generator can count an area only when it is suitable for that prefab. Suitable conditions can include the correct biome, sufficiently flat ground, an allowed altitude, and enough distance from similar locations.

When the search ends before the requested target is reached, the server writes a line such as Failed to place all <LocationName>, placed X out of Y. The line records a shortfall in that generation pass. It does not, by itself, report that the dedicated-server process has crashed or that the world file is corrupt.

How to interpret each part

  • LocationName: the location prefab being processed. In a modded installation, this may be a custom name rather than a vanilla Valheim location.
  • X: how many valid locations were actually placed.
  • Y: how many placements the generator was trying to reach for that pass.

A line like Failed to place all VV_SilverCave, placed 5 out of 50 means five candidates passed the location’s rules while the generator could not find 45 more. A result of zero means that no candidate area was accepted under those rules; it does not automatically mean that the server failed to start.

Why many lines appear on the first startup

A new dedicated server must generate its world before players can use it. The first launch can take several minutes, and the console may scroll through many placement warnings while that work is in progress. BESTNET-GSERVER’s setup guidance describes these lines as normal progress during first-time world generation.

Do not judge the startup from an individual console line. Wait for the control panel or server console to report Online. Once the world already exists, later starts are normally faster because Valheim is loading the generated world instead of creating it from scratch.

The status that matters

  • Online, and players can join: the placement lines were warnings during generation. Continue by checking the world in play rather than trying to eliminate every line.
  • Still generating: allow the first startup to finish. Stopping the process while the world is being created can leave you without a usable initial result.
  • Never reaches Online: investigate the complete startup log, not just the placement message. A placement shortfall may be incidental to another problem.

Why Valheim may place fewer locations than requested

The requested count is a target, not a promise that the map can always accommodate it. A location can be rejected even when the map appears to have open space because the generator evaluates rules that are not obvious from the terrain view.

Biome restrictions

Many locations are valid only in particular biomes. A location type intended for one biome cannot use an otherwise empty area in another biome, so a world with limited suitable terrain can finish below its target.

Ground shape and flatness

Some prefabs require ground that is flat enough for the structure or encounter to work. Slopes, uneven terrain, and other surface conditions can disqualify an area even when there is room nearby.

Altitude limits

Locations can also have altitude requirements. Areas that meet the biome and surface rules may still be rejected if they are too high or too low for the prefab.

Spacing from similar locations

The generator keeps locations apart according to placement rules. A candidate can therefore fail because another instance is already too close. This spacing check prevents the requested number from being reached when suitable areas are limited.

More World Locations AIO’s FAQ describes these biome, flatness, distance, and altitude checks and notes that the game may be unable to reach a requested spawn quantity when not enough areas meet them.

What to do immediately after seeing the warning

  1. Let the first generation finish. Keep the server running until its control panel or console reports Online.
  2. Connect with a test player. Confirm that the server accepts a normal connection and that the world loads.
  3. Record the exact location name. Copy the complete line, including the number placed and the target number. This distinguishes a vanilla location from a modded prefab and gives you a reproducible symptom.
  4. Check the game in the affected biome. If the server is playable, look for the feature that the location is supposed to provide before changing files or regenerating the world.
  5. Only then investigate further. Escalate when the location is demonstrably missing, the server cannot reach Online, or a modded location pack reports persistent zero placements alongside a gameplay problem.

When the warning is harmless and when it is not

Situation How to treat the message Next action
First startup, generation still running Normal progress output can include many placement shortfalls. Wait for the server to finish and show Online.
Server reaches Online and players can join Usually a warning only. Play-test the relevant area; do not change the world solely to remove the line.
Server reaches Online but a required feature is absent Potentially significant for that location type. Identify whether the prefab is vanilla or modded, then check its biome and generation requirements.
Persistent “placed 0” from a modded location pack plus missing content Needs investigation. Review the mod’s documentation, load order, configuration, and world exploration state.
Server never reaches Online Not enough evidence to blame the placement line. Review the full console output and startup configuration for the actual failure.

There is no documented universal percentage that separates a “good” count from a “bad” one. A low count, including zero, becomes meaningful when it matches a reproducible missing feature or an incomplete startup—not merely because the number looks small.

Vanilla locations versus modded locations

The same wording can describe two different situations. Vanilla generation follows Valheim’s built-in location rules. A mod can add new prefabs with tighter biome, terrain, altitude, spacing, or configuration requirements, making a low count more likely.

How to identify which case you have

  • Names that look like standard Valheim locations are more likely to be part of the base game.
  • Names with a mod prefix or an unfamiliar identifier should be treated as modded until confirmed.
  • If the line appeared only after installing a location pack, use that pack’s documentation and configuration as the primary reference.

Do not apply a mod’s repair procedure automatically to a vanilla world. Mod instructions describe that mod’s prefab and generation behavior; they are not a universal fix for every “Failed to place all” line.

Existing worlds and unexplored areas

Location-generation behavior matters when a mod is added after a world already exists. One mod’s documentation gives the example of using Valheim’s genloc command to generate added locations in unexplored areas. That is mod-specific guidance, not a guaranteed repair for vanilla servers.

World exploration state is therefore an important diagnostic detail. A newly generated world has more unprocessed terrain, while a heavily explored world may not provide the same opportunities for a newly installed location pack. Some modded setups may require additional tooling when the relevant areas have already been explored.

Before running any command or regeneration tool, identify the exact mod, back up the world, and follow that mod’s current instructions. The available guidance does not establish one universal command or recovery process for all location packs.

Safe troubleshooting workflow

1. Confirm the startup result

Use the hosting panel or console status as the first checkpoint. “Online” means the process completed enough startup work to accept connections; it is more informative than the presence of any single warning.

2. Separate generation output from gameplay symptoms

Ask whether players can join, move through the world, and use normal systems. If the only symptom is a console line, avoid destructive changes. If a dungeon, resource, or other required feature is missing in play, continue with location-specific checks.

3. Check the exact prefab

Copy the location name exactly and determine whether it belongs to vanilla Valheim or an installed mod. For a modded prefab, verify that the required dependency, configuration, and compatible game version are present according to the mod’s documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check placement conditions

Compare the affected location’s requirements with the world: allowed biome, terrain flatness, altitude, and spacing from existing instances. A zero count can be a legitimate result when no area satisfies all four categories.

5. Check exploration state

For locations added to an existing world, determine whether the relevant regions remain unexplored. A mod may support a command such as genloc for unexplored areas, but use it only when the mod’s own instructions specify it.

6. Preserve a recoverable copy

Back up the world before regenerating, using commands, removing mods, or changing generation settings. A backup lets you return to the last known-good state if a location tool or configuration change produces a worse result.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Stopping the first startup immediately: generation can legitimately take several minutes and may print many warnings before Online status appears.
  • Assuming zero means corruption: zero means no candidate passed the location rules for that generation pass; it is not proof of a damaged world.
  • Regenerating to silence the console: changing a world for cosmetic log output can create unnecessary risk when players already have a functional server.
  • Using a mod command on a vanilla server: commands documented for a custom location pack may not apply to base-game prefabs.
  • Ignoring a real missing feature: a warning deserves investigation when the corresponding gameplay content is absent or the server never reaches Online.
  • Looking for a magic percentage: no universal “bad” placement rate is established. Context, location type, world state, and actual gameplay matter more than the ratio alone.

What “placed 0 out of 50” means in practice

“Placed 0 out of 50” means the generator attempted to find up to 50 valid instances and accepted none during that pass. The most useful next question is not “How do I force 50?” but “What prefab is this, and is its gameplay content actually missing?”

For a vanilla location, first verify that the server completed startup and that the relevant biome has been explored. For a modded location, check the mod’s documented conditions and whether the world was generated before or after the mod was installed. A zero count accompanied by a fully playable server may remain a harmless limitation of that world’s available terrain; a zero count accompanied by missing required content is a concrete troubleshooting case.

Bottom line for server administrators

Read “Failed to place all” as a report about location placement, not as an automatic crash message. Wait for first-time generation to complete, use Online status and an actual connection as your initial tests, and inspect the affected feature in-game. Investigate only when startup is incomplete, the location is genuinely missing, or a modded prefab continues to report zero placements with a corresponding gameplay problem. Keep vanilla and mod-specific instructions separate, and back up the world before attempting generation commands or other repairs.
