A Valheim server can be running normally and still be absent from the Community list when its discovery method does not match its backend. A server launched with -crossplay uses PlayFab relay infrastructure and a join code, while a Steam-backend server relies on browser visibility, -public 1, a successful registration message, and reachable forwarded ports. Identify the backend first, then apply the matching fix.

What “not showing” actually tells you
The Community list is not a universal status display for every Valheim dedicated server. It is primarily a discovery surface for the Steam backend. Crossplay servers can be operating correctly without appearing there, because they use PlayFab’s relay service and are joined with a code instead of relying on the same Steam browser registration path.

- Steam backend: the server should register for browser discovery when it is public, and players normally need a reachable address and forwarded ports.
- Crossplay backend: the server is reached through relay infrastructure and a join code; router port forwarding is not required for outside access, and Steam-browser absence is not proof that the server is offline.
Friends connecting by IP while the server is missing from the list is especially useful evidence. It usually means the process is reachable but browser registration, visibility, or the selected discovery method is different from what you expect. Conversely, a Crossplay server that is invisible in the Steam browser may need no repair at all; give players its Crossplay join code.

Iron Gate’s dedicated-server documentation defines the choice this way: -crossplay runs the server on the PlayFab Crossplay backend; leaving it out uses Steam. Treat that argument as the starting point for every diagnosis.

Step 1: inspect the launch script before changing the router
Open the copied start_headless_server.bat on Windows or the Linux launch script used to start the dedicated server. Read the complete command rather than relying on an old shortcut or a control-panel label. Three arguments matter immediately:
-crossplaydetermines whether PlayFab relay and Crossplay joining are used.-public 1enables browser visibility for a Steam-backend server. Iron Gate documents-public 1as the default that makes a server visible in the browser.-public 0deliberately hides the server from the browser. It is appropriate for a private server, but it explains an empty Community-list result.
Also locate the -port value. The router rule, the address you share, and the port used by the server must agree. If you change the launch script, stop the server cleanly, save the file, and start it again so the new backend and visibility settings are actually loaded.
Do not add -crossplay merely because the browser is empty. First decide whether you want Steam discovery or Crossplay’s code-based, cross-platform workflow. Changing the backend changes how every player joins.
Fixing a Steam-backend server that is missing
1. Make the server public
For a Steam-backend server intended to appear in the Community list, set -public 1 in the launch script. Remove an accidental -public 0 or replace it with -public 1. A private server can still accept direct connections, so successful IP connections do not contradict a hidden browser entry.
After changing the argument, restart the dedicated server. A running process that was started with the old command will retain the old visibility state.

2. Wait for the registration message
Watch the server console during startup. The official guide says that the exact message “Game server connected” means the server is up and ready to accept connections. If that line has not appeared, troubleshoot startup or network access before expecting a Community-list entry.

When Windows displays a firewall prompt for the server, allow the program through the firewall on the networks you intend to use. A local firewall can prevent registration or incoming traffic even when the launch arguments are correct. If no prompt appeared, inspect the firewall rules for the dedicated-server executable and apply an equivalent allow rule rather than disabling the firewall wholesale.
3. Forward the ports that the script actually uses
Iron Gate’s guide identifies 2456–2457 as the default Steam-backend ports. The guide also requires forwarding the configured port range to the host computer. If your script uses a different -port value, forward the corresponding range instead of blindly forwarding the defaults.
- Read the
-portargument in the launch script. - In the router’s port-forwarding section, create rules for the full range required by that configuration.
- Set the destination to the local address of the computer running the Valheim server.
- Ensure the router’s external and internal port values match the server’s configured port range.
- Save the rules, restart the server if necessary, and allow time for it to register again.
A forwarded rule aimed at the wrong computer, an old local address, or a different port than the one in -port will not make the server discoverable. Keep the host’s local address stable so a later DHCP change does not silently invalidate the rule.
4. Share the right address
Steam-backend players outside your home network need the public address associated with the forwarded host and the configured port. A private LAN address works only for clients that can reach that local network. A loopback address such as the host’s own local-only endpoint is useful for testing on the server computer, not for an Internet player.

If a friend can connect by the public address but cannot find the server in the browser, the remaining problem is discovery or visibility rather than basic reachability. Recheck -public 1, the registration message, and the backend selection instead of repeatedly changing port rules.
5. Interpret a successful registration correctly
“Game server connected” confirms that the server has connected to the game-service backend and is ready to accept connections; it does not override a deliberate -public 0 setting, a wrong backend assumption, or a router rule aimed at the wrong host. Use the message as a checkpoint in the sequence, not as a guarantee that every browser view will update instantly.
Fixing a Crossplay server that is not in the Community list
1. Confirm that Crossplay is intentional
With -crossplay present, the server uses PlayFab’s Crossplay backend. This is the appropriate choice when players need the supported cross-platform path or when router port forwarding is impractical. The Crossplay FAQ describes copying the server’s join code and sending it to a friend.
Do not evaluate this server solely through the Steam Community browser. Current troubleshooting guidance specifically notes that Crossplay servers may not appear there. Their absence from that list is compatible with a healthy server.
2. Use the join-code workflow
- Start the server with
-crossplayand wait for its normal startup and connection output. - Obtain the Crossplay join code shown by the game or server flow. The FAQ says the code can be copied by clicking it.
- Have the player open Join Game, choose Add server, and paste the code.
- Connect through that saved entry rather than searching the Steam Community list for the Crossplay server.
The join code is the discovery identifier for this backend. If it is copied incorrectly or an old code is shared, generate or copy the currently displayed code and send that exact value again.

3. Do not forward ports for the relay path
Iron Gate states that a Crossplay server transmits data through a relay server and therefore does not require port forwarding to be accessible from outside the local network. Adding Steam-style forwarding rules cannot turn a Crossplay server into a Steam-browser listing and can distract from the actual join-code process.
You still need the server application to run, the host firewall to permit it where applicable, and the game versions to be compatible. Relay networking removes the router-forwarding requirement; it does not remove startup or version requirements.

An outside player cannot reach the host through its local or loopback IP. For Crossplay, use the join code supplied by the Crossplay workflow. If the particular connection flow requests a public address or port, use the public values supported by that backend—not a private LAN address copied from the host’s network settings.

Iron Gate’s Crossplay announcement warns that the game and the friends’ versions should match. A mismatch can prevent connection after discovery has been configured correctly. Verify the server’s installed game version and the version running on every joining client, then update the outlier through the platform that installed it.
Version checking is especially important when one player can see a join option while another cannot connect. Discovery and compatibility are separate gates: a valid join code or visible listing does not make incompatible builds communicate successfully.

A reliable order for troubleshooting
Work from the server’s identity outward. This avoids changing several variables at once and makes each result meaningful.

- Read the launch command. Record whether
-crossplayis present, whether-publicis 0 or 1, and which-portis configured. - Choose the intended join method. Steam means browser discovery and forwarded ports; Crossplay means a join code and relay access.
- Confirm startup. Wait for “Game server connected” and handle the Windows firewall prompt or rule.
- Apply only the matching network fix. Forward the Steam range to the correct host, or use the Crossplay code without adding unnecessary forwarding rules.
- Check versions. Match the server and every player before treating a failed join as a discovery problem.
- Test with the correct address type. Do not give an outside player a LAN or loopback IP.
Keeping this order matters because a browser symptom can be produced by a hidden server, an unregistered process, a backend mismatch, or a normal Crossplay design. The same visible symptom does not imply the same repair.
When switching backends is the right decision
Choose Steam when browser discovery is the priority
A Steam-backend server is the natural fit when the intended audience uses the Steam path and players need to find the world through the Community list. The trade-off is operational: you must keep -public 1, wait for successful registration, permit the server through the host firewall, and forward the configured ports to the correct machine.
Choose Crossplay when platform reach or router simplicity matters
Crossplay is better suited to a mixed-platform group or a host that cannot arrange inbound port forwarding. Players should be prepared to join with the current code, and everyone must run compatible game versions. A missing Steam-list entry is not a reason to abandon Crossplay if the code-based workflow works.
Self-hosting responsibilities that affect visibility
Running a dedicated server yourself means maintaining the launch script, backend selection, firewall access, and (for Steam) router configuration. A managed Valheim server can shift those maintenance tasks to a hosting operator, but the same conceptual distinction remains: confirm whether the service uses Steam discovery or Crossplay joining, and follow that service’s documented address and code workflow. Do not assume that moving the process to another machine automatically changes its backend or makes a private server public.
