Surviving Valor Mortis’s Crimson Plague means slowing down, listening, and treating every dark doorway as a potential ambush. The chapter’s nighttime village combines narrow streets, abandoned homes, unpredictable mutated villagers and elite nephto-infused soldiers. Because Valor Mortis uses first-person Soulslike combat, success depends less on memorizing a universal combo and more on reading space, timing defensive actions and choosing the right distance for each weapon.
What the Crimson Plague chapter is
Valor Mortis is a supernatural retelling of Napoleon’s history built around a first-person Soulslike combat system. One More Level’s official overview describes a campaign in which William dual-wields and levels up swords, firearms and magic while exploring historically inspired architecture, secrets, shortcuts and sidequests.

The Crimson Plague chapter moves that premise into a confined nighttime village. The official trailer announcement shows narrow streets, abandoned houses and flickering torches, while connecting the setting to Napoleon’s supernatural conquest, civilian suffering and William’s crisis of conscience. The darkness is not just visual dressing: it limits sight lines and makes sound, lighting and positioning central to survival.

- Move cautiously. Do not sprint around blind corners or through an unfamiliar courtyard. Enter spaces at a pace that leaves room to retreat.
- Listen before committing. Audio can reveal movement beyond a doorway or behind a wall when the torchlight does not. Pause before opening a route and identify where an attack may come from.
- Use the environment as information. Torches, doorways, fences and narrow lanes affect visibility and escape routes. Fight where you can see the approach and avoid being boxed in.
- Keep reaction space. Unpredictable villagers can attack with little warning. Back away rather than allowing several enemies to surround you, and avoid attacking so aggressively that you lose sight of the next threat.
- Learn the first-person rhythm. Watch an enemy’s approach, respond with the defensive or evasive action your build supports, then punish the opening. First-person perspective changes depth perception, so deliberate camera control matters as much as damage.
Recognize the village’s threats
Mutated villagers
The trailer shows villagers wielding everyday tools, torches and farm equipment. Their behavior is described as unpredictable and almost feral. A civilian appearance is therefore not a safety signal. Observe how an individual closes distance before assuming you can interrupt it, and avoid fighting one enemy with your back to an unseen doorway.

The Relentless
The Relentless are faster, more aggressive nephto-infused soldiers armed with massive greatswords. Their speed and reach make them a different problem from ordinary villagers. Give them more space, wait for a readable commitment and do not treat a brief retreat as proof that the encounter is over.
Sergeant Gaspard “Cannonhand” Dubois
Dubois is identified by a right arm transformed into a cannon and an upper body covered in nephtoglobin tissue. Those features are threat-recognition cues, not a published list of exact counters. Keep his distinctive ranged capability in mind when choosing cover and approach angles, and avoid inventing a fixed attack pattern until you have observed it in your own playthrough.

Choose tools by distance and risk
| Option | Best question to ask | Practical use in the chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Swords | Can I control the space immediately in front of me? | Use when you can maintain a clear melee lane and read an enemy’s commitment. |
| Firearms | Can I create distance or exploit an opening safely? | Useful for ranged pressure, but firing from a poor position can leave you exposed to another attacker. |
| Magic | Do I need damage, utility or a way to change the encounter? | Reserve magical tools for situations where their utility justifies the opportunity cost; the official material does not establish every spell’s effect. |
| Dual-wielding | Does this pairing cover the distance and timing problems I am facing? | Combine complementary tools instead of carrying two options that solve the same problem. |
Valor Mortis supports leveling swords, firearms and magic, but the official announcements do not publish stamina costs, parry windows, weapon statistics or an optimal skill path. Build around the threats you personally struggle with: improve reliable damage if encounters last too long, or favor safer spacing and utility if you are regularly surrounded.

Explore without turning every room into a trap
Secrets, shortcuts and sidequests are part of the game’s stated exploration structure. In the Crimson Plague’s cramped village, exploration is safest when you create information before creating danger.

- Check a route’s exits before engaging an enemy near a doorway.
- Use newly opened shortcuts to reduce the risk of repeating a long, dark approach after a defeat.
- Return to suspicious spaces after gaining a new ability or weapon rather than forcing an encounter with an incomplete toolkit.
- Listen for movement in abandoned houses and enter with enough room to turn around.
The available official material does not provide a complete item map or verified secret-by-secret walkthrough, so treat environmental clues and your own notes as more trustworthy than an assumed universal route.
What to know before starting
- The campaign is advertised as a 20-hour story by One More Level for the 2026 launch.
- The launch date is October 13, 2026.
- The developer says hundreds of thousands of players had played the Playtest and Demo versions by August 2026.
- The Steam Next Fest demo chapters were bespoke versions of Chapters I and VII, so demo layouts should not automatically be treated as identical to the final chapters.
Those points explain why early familiarity can help without replacing adaptation: the final game still expects you to learn its first-person timing and the specific layout of each encounter.

One More Level also said the physical-disc version was ready for printing, but the available announcement does not establish a live retailer listing, seller or region. Verify the platform and regional listing before ordering a physical copy.
Limits of the currently documented advice
Official announcements establish the setting, enemy identities, combat categories and broad survival principles. They do not establish exact boss timings, guaranteed counters, item locations, damage values, performance benchmarks or a universally best build. If a guide claims those details without verified gameplay evidence, treat them as provisional rather than rules for every player.
