The VALORANT “Chat Room Not Connected” message means the game cannot establish a working connection to Riot’s chat service. The fault is usually either on Riot’s side (an outage or maintenance event) or somewhere between your PC, router, DNS resolver, firewall and internet provider. Check regional server status first; if Riot is operating normally, work through the local network fixes in order, starting with complete restarts and ending with firewall or DNS changes.
What the error actually means
VALORANT can load far enough to show menus or let you enter a match while its chat session remains disconnected. Text chat, party communication and voice chat may therefore fail together, even when web browsing appears normal. The message is a connection diagnostic, not proof that your microphone is broken or that your account has been penalized.

Two broad causes are documented by troubleshooting guides from Dot Esports, Appuals and WindowsReport: Riot’s servers may be unavailable, or your local connection path may be preventing the chat service from completing its connection. Local causes include unstable Wi‑Fi, a VPN or proxy, DNS resolution trouble, firewall rules and router behavior. These are possible causes rather than a guarantee that every occurrence has the same origin.

Check regional Riot service status first
Open Riot’s official regional service-status communications before changing Windows or router settings. Look for an incident or scheduled maintenance affecting VALORANT or chat in your region. If an outage is listed, wait for Riot to restore service: changing DNS, opening ports or reinstalling the game cannot repair a server-side failure.

If no incident is listed, status pages can still lag behind a newly developing problem. Ask a friend in the same region whether chat is working, or test another internet connection if one is available. A simultaneous failure for several players points toward Riot; a failure limited to your home connection points toward the steps below.

Follow this repair sequence
Perform the steps in order. The early actions are low-risk and reversible; DNS, firewall and router changes should be recorded so you can undo them.
1. Close every Riot and VALORANT process
- Exit VALORANT and the Riot Client normally.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Windows Task Manager. - On the Processes list, end any remaining VALORANT, Riot Client or Riot Vanguard processes. Select a process, choose End task, and confirm only when you recognize it as part of Riot’s software.
- Launch the Riot Client again, sign in and start VALORANT.
A complete process restart clears a stuck chat session without changing your network configuration. If the error returns immediately, continue rather than repeatedly relaunching the same processes.

2. Restart Windows and your router
- Save work, choose Start > Power > Restart, and wait until Windows is fully ready.
- Unplug your router’s power cable. If you use a separate modem or fiber gateway, power that device down as well.
- Wait briefly, reconnect the modem or gateway first, then reconnect the router. Allow the status lights to settle and internet access to return.
- Open VALORANT and test chat before making configuration changes.
Dot Esports and WindowsReport both recommend these restarts because they clear a stalled game process and refresh a router’s temporary state. Do not press a router’s factory-reset button; that erases its configuration and is not required for this error.
3. Remove VPN and proxy variables
Riot’s network guidance recommends testing without a proxy or VPN. These services can route game traffic through a path that blocks, filters or delays the chat connection.
- Disconnect the VPN from its own application and quit the application, rather than merely minimizing it.
- In Windows, open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and disable a manual proxy you do not intentionally use.
- Restart VALORANT after changing the route.
If chat works with the VPN disconnected, the VPN provider, selected server or split-tunneling policy is the variable to investigate. Do not assume that changing to another VPN server is a permanent fix; first confirm that ordinary, direct internet access works.

4. Test with wired Ethernet
Connect the PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, such as a Cat6 cable, then disable Wi‑Fi temporarily so Windows uses the wired adapter. Launch VALORANT and test party or voice chat.

A successful wired test strongly implicates Wi‑Fi signal quality, channel congestion, interference or a wireless-router issue rather than the VALORANT account. Keep using Ethernet when practical, or move the access point, reduce obstructions and troubleshoot the wireless network. If wired and Wi‑Fi fail identically, continue to DNS, firewall and ISP checks.
5. Review DNS only after basic tests fail
DNS translates service names into IP addresses. A slow, unavailable or incorrectly filtered resolver can prevent the chat endpoint from being found even when some websites load. Dot Esports lists changing DNS as a possible fix, and Riot documents Google and Cloudflare public DNS options. Riot also warns that some internet providers may block or interfere with third-party DNS, so this change can make connectivity worse.
- Open Settings > Network & internet, select your active Ethernet or Wi‑Fi connection, and open its DNS or IP assignment settings.
- Record the existing DNS addresses before editing them.
- Change DNS assignment to manual and enter a documented Google or Cloudflare public resolver address. Use the exact addresses listed in Riot’s current network guide rather than copying an unverified address from a forum.
- Save the setting, reconnect the adapter if Windows asks, and test VALORANT.
- If browsing or game connectivity worsens, restore the recorded automatic or original DNS setting.
Because no single public resolver is guaranteed to work with every ISP, treat this as a diagnostic experiment, not a universal recommendation.
6. Release, renew and flush Windows network data
Riot’s network instructions include rebuilding the local IP lease and DNS cache. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), run each command separately, and wait for it to finish:

ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsThe first command gives up the current DHCP address, the second requests a fresh address, and the third removes cached DNS entries. A temporary loss of connectivity while the lease is renewed is normal. Restart Windows after the commands complete, then start VALORANT and test chat.
If ipconfig /renew reports that no operation can be performed, verify that the adapter is enabled and that the router is providing DHCP. Do not repeatedly run commands while an ISP outage is affecting the whole household; that will not restore an unavailable upstream service.
7. Check firewall permissions for VALORANT and Vanguard
Firewall software can block VALORANT or Riot Vanguard from reaching required services. Riot recommends allowing the game and Vanguard through the firewall and notes that router port forwarding may be needed in some connection situations.
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
- Choose Change settings and verify that the Riot Client, VALORANT and Vanguard entries are allowed on the network profile you actually use.
- If an entry is missing, use Allow another app and select the legitimate executable installed by Riot. Do not download replacement executables from third-party sites.
- If you run a separate security suite, check its application-control or game mode and add equivalent exceptions there.
Keep the firewall enabled. Allowing specific applications is safer than disabling protection globally, and a temporary test with protection disabled should only be performed according to your security vendor’s instructions and reverted immediately.

8. Consider router rules and port forwarding carefully
Most home connections do not require manual port forwarding for routine VALORANT play, but Riot notes that particular router or connection arrangements may. Before changing a port rule, update router firmware, verify that the PC has the intended local address and consult Riot’s current network documentation for the exact ports and protocols. Do not copy a random port list from an old guide.
Record every rule you add. Remove it if it has no effect, and never expose unrelated administrative services to the public internet. If your connection uses carrier-grade NAT, a shared building network or an employer-managed firewall, you may not be able to create an effective inbound rule; ask the network administrator or ISP instead.

- Do not reinstall VALORANT first. Reinstalling does not repair a Riot outage, an ISP fault or a blocked DNS path.
- Do not factory-reset the router. That destroys Wi‑Fi names, passwords and ISP settings and is unrelated to a normal chat-service failure.
- Do not leave the firewall disabled. Use narrow application exceptions and restore protection after testing.
- Do not keep switching DNS providers without a baseline. Record the original setting and test one controlled change at a time.
- Do not treat a working web browser as proof that game traffic is healthy. Different services can use different routes, DNS records and firewall rules.
When to contact Riot or your ISP
Contact Riot Support when
Regional status is clear, the complete process and PC/router restarts have been completed, VPN and proxy software are removed from the test, and both wired and Wi‑Fi connections still produce the error. Include your Riot account region, approximate times of failure, whether text and voice are both affected, your Windows version, whether another network was tested and the exact steps already attempted. This prevents support from sending you through the same basic checks without context.
Contact your ISP when
Other devices also lose connectivity, DNS lookups fail across unrelated services, the router repeatedly drops its WAN connection or the problem disappears on a different internet connection. Tell the ISP that you tested without a VPN, restarted the modem and router, and whether Ethernet changed the result. Ask the ISP to check line errors, DNS service and any filtering or carrier-grade NAT that could affect real-time game traffic.
A compact decision path
- Riot incident listed: wait for service restoration and avoid local configuration changes.
- No incident, one PC affected: end Riot processes, restart Windows and retest.
- Still failing: restart the router, disconnect VPN/proxy software and test Ethernet.
- Still failing on a stable connection: review DNS, run the IP-renewal and DNS-flush commands, then restart.
- Still failing: verify firewall exceptions and investigate router rules only when your network design requires them.
- Persistent or household-wide failure: escalate to Riot Support or your ISP with the test history.
This order maximizes diagnostic value while limiting risk: server checks distinguish external incidents, restarts are reversible, Ethernet separates Wi‑Fi from broader faults, and DNS or firewall edits are reserved for cases where simpler explanations have been tested.
