VALORANT Error Code 51 (VAL 51) usually points to a problem creating or using a party through the Riot Client, not a Windows 11 security setting. First restart the game and client, then recreate the party and check whether other players are affected before changing Windows settings.
VAL 51 is not the same as a VAN 51 Vanguard error or Windows Device Manager Code 51. Those refer to different problems. Don’t change Secure Boot or TPM settings for VAL 51 alone.
What VALORANT Error Code 51 means
Error-code references associate VAL 51 with trouble creating or using a party. It is a useful clue, not a precise diagnosis: the cause could be a temporary Riot party-service problem, a stale client session or party invitation, an interrupted connection, or security software blocking a Riot component. PC Gamer’s VALORANT error-code reference describes the party-system connection.
If VALORANT launches but party creation fails, start with the Riot Client and party connection—not graphics drivers or hardware changes. The code by itself does not establish a Vanguard failure, a Device Manager problem, disabled TPM or Secure Boot, or a need to reinstall Windows.

Try these seven fixes in order
1. Restart VALORANT and the Riot Client
- Exit VALORANT.
- Close the Riot Client from the notification area if it is still running.
- Reopen the Riot Client, let it finish loading, then launch VALORANT.
- Try creating a new party rather than reopening the one that failed.
If the client is frozen, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select the Riot Client and VALORANT processes, and choose End task for those processes only. Then relaunch the client. This gives the game a fresh client session; do not end unrelated Windows processes or use third-party game-booster utilities.
2. Restart Windows
Choose Start → Power → Restart. After Windows returns, open the Riot Client, wait for any update or loading to finish, launch VALORANT, and test a new party. A restart is a low-risk reset; it is not a guaranteed fix, and there is no need to repeat it without testing the result.
3. Check for a Riot-side issue
Before making system changes, ask whether party members are seeing the same problem and try again later. If several players encounter party or platform errors at the same time, a Riot-side service issue is plausible and local changes may not help until service is restored. Check Riot’s official service-status or support channels; one player’s error alone does not prove that Riot is down.

4. Leave and recreate the party
- Leave the current party. If possible, ask its leader to disband it.
- Restart VALORANT, then have one player create a new party.
- Invite players individually rather than reusing an invitation that failed.
- Test with another party leader or friend if the error remains.
Note whether the error occurs with every party or only one invitation, friend, or account. This reset is a practical way to isolate the problem; it does not establish that a corrupted party state is the cause.
5. Test the network and connection-altering software
- Restart your modem and router. Riot’s network-instability guidance includes restarting network equipment as a troubleshooting step.
- If practical, test a wired connection and pause large downloads, cloud sync, or streaming while you check.
- Disconnect from a VPN or proxy temporarily, then try a party again.
- If available, test briefly using a mobile hotspot.
If VALORANT works on a hotspot but not on home Wi-Fi, investigate the home router, ISP, firewall, VPN, or network filtering. If it fails on every connection, a client, account-session, or Riot service issue becomes more plausible. If only one friend cannot join, have that player check their client and connection. These tests narrow the possibilities; they do not prove a single cause.
Changing DNS or disabling IPv6 is not a universal fix for VAL 51. Treat those as optional diagnostics only if you have a specific network reason to try them.

6. Check Windows Firewall and updates
Allow VALORANT and Riot Client through Windows Firewall:
- Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection.
- Select Allow an app through firewall, then Change settings.
- Check that Riot Client and VALORANT are allowed on the appropriate network profile. If an entry is missing, choose Allow another app and browse to the installed executable.
- Restart the Riot Client and test again.
Install locations can differ by drive and setup, so browse to the files actually installed on your PC rather than assuming a universal path. Riot’s PC troubleshooting guidance includes firewall exceptions among its troubleshooting steps.

To install pending Windows updates, open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if prompted. Then open the Riot Client and let its updates finish before launching. Keeping Windows current is sensible maintenance, but Riot’s cited update advice is more directly aimed at dependency and anti-cheat issues; it is not a guaranteed VAL 51 fix.
7. Reinstall only as a last resort—or contact Riot Support
Do not remove Vanguard just because VAL 51 appears. First try the less disruptive steps above and establish whether the game works outside a party. If a client reinstall is still warranted, Riot’s support guidance describes removing both VALORANT and Riot Vanguard, restarting Windows, then reinstalling. This is an escalation option, not the default remedy for a party-system code.

- A screenshot of the exact message, including whether it says VAL or VAN.
- Your Riot ID and region, plus the date and approximate time the error occurred.
- Whether you can play solo, whether all party members are affected, and whether the issue follows one particular friend or invitation.
- Your connection type and the result of a hotspot test, if you tried one.
- The troubleshooting steps already attempted and any requested Riot Client or game logs.

VAL 51, VAN errors, and Windows Device Manager Code 51 are different
VAL 51 is associated with the VALORANT party/client path. VAN errors concern Vanguard or system settings that block it; Riot’s Vanguard error-code reference covers that separate category. If the actual message says VAN 9001, VAN 9003, VAN 9002, VAN 57, VAN -81, or another VAN code, follow guidance for that exact code instead. In particular, do not change Secure Boot or TPM settings for VAL 51 alone.
Windows Device Manager Code 51 means a device is waiting for another device or set of devices to start, according to Microsoft’s Device Manager documentation. It is a separate hardware or driver condition, not VALORANT’s party error.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Stop making system changes and contact Riot Support if multiple party members are affected, a suspected service disruption coincides with the error, you can play solo but still cannot join or create parties after basic checks, or a client reinstall made no difference. A controlled connection test and the information listed above are more useful than registry edits, random DLL downloads, unofficial repair tools, or permanent security changes.
