Masters are the VALORANT Champions Tour’s in-season international tournaments; Champions is the season-ending world championship. Masters test teams against global opposition, award Championship Points and identify contenders. Champions brings the qualified teams together for the season’s final event, where one roster becomes the VALORANT World Champion.
That distinction applies to the 2026 VCT structure. Riot changes event formats and qualification routes from season to season, so the handbook for the relevant year should always take priority over a previous season’s explanation.

Masters and Champions at a glance
The easiest way to separate the events is to ask what each one is trying to accomplish. Masters are checkpoints during the competitive year. They provide an international title, expose regional teams to one another and award Championship Points that matter later. Champions is the destination at the end of that year: its winner receives the Champions Trophy and the title of VALORANT World Champion.
| Comparison | Masters | Champions |
|---|---|---|
| Season position | Mid-season international events | Season finale |
| Competitive function | Build international form, award Championship Points and identify contenders | Determine the world champion |
| 2026 field size | 12 teams at each listed Masters event | 16 teams |
| 2026 entry route | Earned through earlier regional results; Masters London uses Stage 1 playoff placement | Stage 2 playoff qualification combined with Championship Points |
| Main stakes | International event title and points toward the season-ending race | Champions Trophy and VALORANT World Champion title |
So, “Is Masters or Champions bigger?” has two answers depending on what you mean. Masters are major international championships and can change the direction of a season. Champions is bigger in title significance because it is the final event and decides the world champion.

Where Masters and Champions fit in the 2026 VCT calendar
The 2026 VCT runs through four territories: Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China. Regional competition feeds the international events, and the international events feed the race toward the finale. The published sequence is:
- Kickoff: regional competition in each territory.
- Masters Santiago: the first global event.
- Stage 1: the next regional phase.
- Masters London: the second global event.
- Stage 2: the final regional phase.
- Champions Shanghai: the season-ending global championship.
This order explains why the two Masters events matter even though neither one is Champions. Teams must perform internationally before the season’s final regional qualification race is complete, while Championship Points accumulate across the year. Champions then uses the final Stage 2 results and the points standings to select its field.
What a Masters tournament is
A Masters is an international VCT tournament held during the season. Teams arrive after qualifying through regional competition, then play opponents from the other VCT territories. The event has its own title, but its wider job is to reveal which teams are genuine global contenders and to add Championship Points to the season standings.

Why Masters exist
- International measurement: A regional record cannot show how a team matches up with every territory. Masters provide that cross-region test.
- Championship Points: Results contribute to a points race that can help determine Champions qualification.
- Season narrative: A Masters win can establish a team as an international favorite, while a poor result can expose weaknesses before the final regional stage.
- Additional silverware: Winning a Masters is a major international achievement even though it does not carry the world-champion designation.
Masters should therefore be read as milestones, not as preliminary exhibitions. The games matter immediately for the event title and later for the Championship Points race.
Masters Santiago in 2026
Masters Santiago is the first global event of the 2026 season. It brings together 12 teams from the International Leagues and awards Championship Points. Its position after Kickoff means it is the first opportunity in the 2026 calendar for teams from the four territories to meet on an international stage.
The 12-team field is a tournament-specific 2026 figure, not a permanent definition of every future Masters. It describes this event under the current season structure.
Masters London in 2026
Masters London is the second 2026 Masters event. Its qualification rule is more specific: the top three teams from each territory’s Stage 1 playoffs qualify. With four territories, that produces a 12-team field.

London is also a major checkpoint in the Championship Points race. Teams are no longer trying only to prove that they can win one international event; they are positioning themselves for the qualification system that will be resolved at Champions after Stage 2.
What Champions is
Champions is the final and most prestigious international event of the VCT season. Riot describes it as the point where the best team in the world is crowned. The 2026 edition, Champions Shanghai, has 16 teams competing for the Champions Trophy and the title of VALORANT World Champion.
Champions’ competitive purpose
Champions answers the season’s ultimate question: which qualified team is the world champion? Unlike Masters, it is not another checkpoint followed by more scheduled VCT stages. It closes the competitive year, so the winner’s title represents the completed season rather than a mid-year snapshot.
The final event also has a broader field than either listed 2026 Masters: 16 teams instead of 12. That allows more teams to reach the season’s decisive tournament while preserving a qualification race that rewards both late regional performance and sustained results.

Champions Shanghai qualification in 2026
Each of the four territories sends four teams, assembled through two routes:
- The territory’s top two teams from the Stage 2 playoffs qualify.
- The territory’s top two Championship Point earners also qualify.
Four territories multiplied by four places gives the 16-team Champions field. This is a combined system: finishing high in Stage 2 can qualify a team, and a strong Championship Points record can provide separate places. The exact 2026 rule is not “the Masters winners qualify automatically.”
How the 2026 qualification path works
Following the calendar from a team’s perspective makes the difference clearer. The path is not one single ladder in which every Masters winner receives a Champions invitation.

Step 1: Compete in the regional VCT structure
Teams begin in their territory—Americas, EMEA, Pacific or China—and play the regional portions of the season. Kickoff is the first listed 2026 phase. Regional performance creates the routes into the first international event and establishes the competitive context for the rest of the year.

The first international field contains 12 teams from the International Leagues. Qualification is earned through earlier regional results, although the published summary does not provide a single universal placement formula for every territory. Once at Santiago, teams compete for the Masters title and Championship Points.
Step 3: Return to regional play for Stage 1
After Santiago, the VCT returns to regional competition for Stage 1. The results of each territory’s Stage 1 playoffs determine its representatives at Masters London.
Step 4: Reach Masters London
The top three Stage 1 playoff teams in each territory qualify for London. Those 12 teams contest the second Masters title and another important Championship Points opportunity.
Step 5: Contest Stage 2
After London, teams play Stage 2 in their territories. Stage 2 is the final regional phase before Champions and has two qualification consequences: its playoff finish can directly place a team in Champions, and the season’s Championship Points standings provide another route.

For each territory, the top two Stage 2 playoff teams and the top two Championship Point earners take the four available places. The 16 successful teams then compete at Champions Shanghai for the world title.
Does winning Masters qualify a team for Champions?
Not automatically under the 2026 rules described here. Winning a Masters gives a team an international title and Championship Points, which can improve its position in the points-based Champions race. But Champions places are assigned through the Stage 2 playoff and Championship Point routes. A Masters champion still has to finish the season in one of the qualifying positions.

That distinction matters because a team can win early, struggle later and fail to secure a Champions place if its final Stage 2 result and points position do not qualify. Conversely, a team that does not win Masters can still reach Champions by performing strongly in Stage 2 or accumulating enough Championship Points over the season.
Why Championship Points matter
Championship Points are the bridge between the in-season events and the finale. Masters Santiago and Masters London award them, and the points standings are used for two Champions places in each territory. Points reward sustained performance rather than one isolated tournament result.
For viewers, this creates two separate questions after every Masters:
- Who won this international event?
- How did the result change each team’s position in the longer Champions qualification race?
The first question is about the Masters trophy. The second is about access to the season-ending championship. A tournament can be significant on both levels without making its winner an automatic Champions qualifier.

Champions is the higher-status title because it is the season finale and its winner is officially the VALORANT World Champion. Riot’s 2026 handbook characterizes Champions as the final international event where the best team in the world is crowned, with 16 teams competing for the Champions Trophy.
Masters remain among the most important events in professional VALORANT. They are global tournaments, not regional cups, and they can change a team’s international reputation, Championship Points total and path to the finale. Calling Masters “less important” would miss their role; calling them equivalent to Champions would miss the difference between a mid-season title and the world championship.

- Masters Santiago: 12 teams from the International Leagues.
- Masters London: 12 teams, consisting of the top three Stage 1 playoff teams from each of four territories.
- Champions Shanghai: 16 teams, with each territory sending two Stage 2 playoff qualifiers and two Championship Point qualifiers.
The larger Champions field does not mean qualification is easier. Champions places are the result of a full season of regional and international competition, and each territory has only four places.
Common misconceptions
“Masters is just a qualifier for Champions.”
Masters can affect Champions qualification through Championship Points, but they also award their own international titles and test teams against global opponents. They are meaningful championships in their own right.
“Champions is another Masters.”
Both are international VCT events, but Champions is the final event and carries the world-champion title. Its qualification system also combines Stage 2 playoff results with Championship Points.

The 2026 structure described here does not grant that automatic guarantee. The team must still qualify through the Stage 2 or Championship Point routes.
“The same qualification rules apply every year.”
Riot can change locations, field sizes, tournament formats and qualification paths. The 2026 numbers should not be treated as permanent VCT rules.
What changes in 2027?
Riot has announced that VCT 2027 will use an open, tournament-based model with new qualification paths to both Masters and Champions. That announcement makes the broad distinction—Masters during the season, Champions at the end—useful beyond 2026, but it makes the exact route and field-size details season-specific.
Before relying on a 2026 explanation for 2027, check that season’s official handbook. Do not assume that the four-territory allocation, 12-team Masters fields, 16-team Champions field or Stage 2-and-points formula will remain unchanged.

A quick way to identify the event you are watching
- Check its place in the calendar. If it occurs before Stage 2, it is a Masters event; if it follows the season’s final regional phase, it is Champions.
- Check the stated objective. Championship Points and contender identification point to Masters; the world-champion title points to Champions.
- Check the field. The 2026 Masters events have 12 teams, while Champions Shanghai has 16.
- Check the qualification story. Masters entrants come through earlier regional results; Champions entrants come through Stage 2 playoff placement and Championship Points.
Using those four checks prevents the most common mix-up: treating every international VCT tournament as if it were the world championship.
