What changed in VALORANT Patch 10.01?
Riot Games’ Patch 10.01 notes describe a Competitive Mode change alongside bug fixes. The update was published on January 21, 2025. These are the rules and fixes in that patch, not a statement of VALORANT’s current competitive rules.
How Rank Shields worked in Patch 10.01
Riot added two Rank Shields at Tier 1 of each rank except Radiant. Tier 1 means the lowest division within a rank, such as Silver 1, Gold 1 or Platinum 1. The shields protect against demotion from that tier after losses at 0 RR.
Losses and demotion at 0 RR
- At 0 RR in an eligible Tier 1, the first loss consumes one shield.
- A second loss at 0 RR consumes the other shield.
- A third loss at 0 RR demotes the player to the lower rank. Riot’s example is a drop from Gold 1 to Silver 3.
The protection applies only in Tier 1; other tiers, such as Gold 2, do not have shields at 0 RR. Radiant is excluded from the system.

When shields replenish
Shields replenish when a player enters Tier 1 through promotion or demotion. A win at 0 RR that returns the player to 10 RR does not replenish them. The Rank Details screen in the client displays the Rank Shield information.
