The Competitive ladder in VALORANT runs, from lowest to highest, through Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal and Radiant. Ascendant sits between Diamond and Immortal. Riot ties your visible rank to two hidden-to-the-player values, Matchmaking Rating (MMR) and Ranked Rating (RR), and it changes the details of both through patches. “Rank distribution” means how many players sit at each rank, and Riot has never published a current, dated percentage breakdown that you can quote as today’s figures.
The rank order, from bottom to top
- Iron
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Platinum
- Diamond
- Ascendant
- Immortal
- Radiant
Each of the first six ranks is split into numbered divisions (for example, Gold 1 through Gold 3). Immortal and Radiant are not split the same way; Immortal has its own tiered leaderboard thresholds, and Radiant is the top of the ladder. Check the Competitive screen in your client for the division labels currently shown, because division naming and display can change with patches.
Where Ascendant came from
Ascendant was not part of the original ladder. Riot introduced it in Patch 5.0 as a rank between Diamond and Immortal. Riot’s explanation was that it added room in the lower-to-middle part of the distribution without packing more players into Platinum and Diamond. Older guides that list fewer ranks, or that describe a three-tier grouping for the lower ranks, predate that change and should not be used as a current rank list.
What rank distribution means
Rank distribution is the population of players spread across the ladder: how many accounts are Gold, how many are Immortal, and so on. It is not a fixed property of the game. Because rank is calculated from MMR, shifts in player skill, new players and calibration changes all move the population around.

- Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver
Riot has discussed this openly, but only in historical terms. In an Ask VALORANT post dated August 27, 2021, Competitive designer Jon Walker wrote: “Since your rank is tied to your MMR, this led to the whole playerbase situated in a rank lower than intended (by a small amount).” That post described a target to move some players upward and said the target might not be exact, because community skill changes over time. It is a 2021 goal, not a measurement of today’s ladder.
In practice, this means:
- Any percentage you find for a specific rank comes from a third-party snapshot, an old Riot chart, or an unverified tracker. Check its date and method before relying on it.
- Riot’s 2021 chart reflects the population at that time and should not be reused as current data.
- Your own rank tells you where your MMR currently places you, not where you sit in a published percentile.
How rank, MMR and RR fit together
Two values drive the ladder, and they play different roles.

MMR: the underlying skill estimate
MMR is Riot’s internal estimate of your skill. Riot’s 2022 Ascendant notes state that MMR targets determine when a rank should be reached. Changes to MMR affect where players land, which is why Riot has adjusted it several times and why distribution moves over time.
RR: the progress shown on the ladder
RR is the value that moves your displayed rank. Riot’s 2022 notes describe RR gains as the mechanism that pushes your displayed rank toward your MMR. In other words, RR is the visible step toward where your skill estimate says you belong.

Riot has not published a complete formula, and it has not published fixed RR gains or losses per match. Any table claiming “+18 RR for a win at Gold 2” is not an official figure. Per-match numbers can change with patches, so treat them as unknown unless Riot states them.
Changes that affected RR and leaderboards
| Patch or source | Date | What it changed | What it did not change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ascendant rank notes (Riot) | 2022 | Described MMR targets as the trigger for reaching a rank and RR gains as the push toward MMR. | Did not publish a per-match RR table. |
| Patch 12.05 | Not stated in the source reviewed | Adjusted RR thresholds for Immortal 2, Immortal 3 and Radiant so leaderboard requirements line up across regions. | Underlying MMR systems were left unchanged. |
| Patch 13.00 | Not stated in the source reviewed | Adjusted RR calculations after earlier MMR changes, so consistent winners were less likely to feel stuck. | No complete formula was published. |
If you follow leaderboard placement, the Patch 12.05 change matters: thresholds for the top Immortal and Radiant tiers are region-aligned, so a region-specific number you saw in an older post may no longer apply.

Boosting and rank manipulation
Riot’s July 14, 2026 post, “Playing Fair: Anti-boosting and other smurfing countermeasures,” defines boosting as “a type of smurfing in which a player uses an account that is lower ranked than their own main account to inflate the rank of the account they are on, and/or the accounts in their party.”
Riot says confirmed rank manipulation can lead to account suspensions, reversal of RR or MMR gains, reversal of rewards, and permanent bans for repeated or severe abuse. A losing streak or a run of strong matches is not manipulation. The distinction Riot draws is intent: using a lower-ranked account to lift a rank is the target.

What this article does not cover
- Current official percentages for each rank. Riot’s published material does not provide them.
- Exact RR gains and losses per match.
- Placement match counts, party restrictions and inactivity handling. Check the Competitive screen and the latest patch notes for these, because they are not established in the sources this article relies on.
When you read a rank guide, first check its date. Then check whether it cites a Riot patch number. A post that gives a percentage or RR number without either should be treated as an estimate.
