What changed for VCT 2026?
Riot Games’ 2026 season overview says Ascension is no longer part of the system. Under the announced format, Challenger teams qualify for Stage 2 Playoffs in their territory and face partnered International League teams while competing for places at Champions.
Riot announced four Challenger places per territory. These are places in Stage 2 Playoffs—not promotions into an International League. The route therefore changes both the destination and the nature of the competition: rather than winning entry to an International League, Challengers teams compete for a Champions opportunity.
How the old Ascension route worked
When Riot introduced Challengers Ascension in 2023, winners from the three regional tournaments earned places in the following year’s International Leagues. The original promotion term was two years, after which a team would return to Challengers and need to qualify again, according to Riot’s 2023 explanation of Challengers Ascension.

Riot revised the system in its 2025 update. Promoted teams received a one-year term, with performance affecting whether they could extend their stay, defend a place through Ascension, or be relegated. That update also described International Leagues capped at 12 teams each. Those were rules for the earlier system, not terms that define the newly announced 2026 Challenger route. How Challenger places vary by region
Riot’s 2026 announcement does not present every territory’s allocation in the cited material, so the four-place total should not be read as four identically assigned slots in every region. APAC is a specific example: Riot said places would go directly to top teams from Challengers Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea, while a Last Chance Qualifier involving teams from South Asia, Oceania, and Southeast Asia would decide the fourth place. What the change means for teams and viewers
For Challengers teams, the announced 2026 route is a chance to reach Champions without first receiving a promotion into an International League. They must qualify for the Stage 2 Playoffs and compete there against International League teams. Riot also said qualifying teams would receive a $75,000 cash stipend to help with travel, visas, and attendance; this is support for participating teams, not a viewer prize.
For viewers, the useful distinction is that Ascension is historical context, not the name of the 2026 route. A Challengers team can still reach the Champions race, but through Stage 2 Playoffs under the announced system—not by winning Ascension and joining an International League. Riot has not established in these announcements why it removed Ascension, so the format change should not be attributed to an unstated motive.
