If VALORANT says “We Have Encountered an Unknown Error,” the wording is not a diagnostic code. It is a generic failure state that can appear while signing in through the Riot Client or while launching the game. The cause may be your connection, firewall, another background process, damaged or outdated files, graphics drivers, Vanguard, or a Riot service outage. Start with a full restart and a service-status check, then work through the least destructive fixes before reinstalling anything.
Searches such as “Valorant we have encountered an unknown error,” “VALORANT unknown error when signing in,” “Riot Client login unknown error,” and “Valorant won’t launch after unknown error” generally describe this same family of failures. The exact text alone cannot tell you which layer is broken; an accompanying code, server banner, screenshot, and log are more useful evidence.
What the unknown-error message actually means
Riot Client and VALORANT use the phrase when a more specific failure is not surfaced to the player. It can therefore cover both authentication and launch problems. A client that cannot reach Riot services, a firewall rule that blocks an executable, a broken local cache, an incompatible driver, or Vanguard failing to initialize can all end with similar wording.

Riot’s error-code catalog groups the underlying failures into recognizable families:

There is an important 2026 qualification. On September 22, 2026, Riot Support warned: “VALORANT is displaying the wrong error code for various errors due to a recent bug.” Treat a displayed code as a clue, not proof. Preserve the full message and logs before deciding that a particular subsystem is at fault.

Use evidence before changing the installation
Note exactly when the failure occurs: before the login form, after entering credentials, while the client is updating, or after pressing Play. Capture the complete screenshot, including any code or maintenance banner. If several computers on the same network fail at once, a service or network cause is more likely than a damaged local installation. If only one Windows account or one PC fails, local software becomes more likely.
Use the following decision guide to select the next low-risk test:

Fix “We Have Encountered an Unknown Error” in order
1. Exit Riot Client completely and restart Windows
Close VALORANT, then quit the Riot Client from its notification-area icon. Open Task Manager and end any remaining Riot Client or VALORANT processes only if they are still running. Launch the Riot Client again and try once. If the message remains, restart Windows rather than merely signing out. Riot lists a client restart as the first response for several connection and client errors, and a full reboot is especially important when Vanguard has requested initialization.
2. Check whether Riot services are unavailable
Before deleting files or reinstalling, look for a current Riot service-status incident, maintenance notice, or platform outage. Codes 39 and 46 specifically indicate an unavailable server or platform downtime. A service outage can also appear as a generic unknown error when the client cannot obtain a more precise response. If an incident is active, leave your installation unchanged and retry after Riot reports recovery.
3. Test the network without avoidable intermediaries
Use a wired Ethernet connection for one test if available. Otherwise, move close to the router and pause downloads, video streams, cloud synchronization, and other high-bandwidth activity. Power-cycle the modem and router: disconnect power, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect, and allow the connection to return.

Disable a VPN and any proxy while diagnosing. Riot says VPNs and proxies frequently create connection problems by changing routing or presenting an address its services cannot use reliably. Re-enable them only after VALORANT works normally, and then test whether the specific service is compatible.

On current Windows versions, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, select Reset now, and restart when prompted. This removes and recreates network adapters, so record any custom adapter or VPN settings first. A successful browser connection does not prove that Riot traffic is passing correctly; the game can still be blocked by DNS, routing, or filtering.
4. Refresh Windows Firewall and security exceptions
Windows Firewall or third-party antivirus can block the Riot Client, VALORANT, or Vanguard after an update changes an executable. In Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall, confirm that the Riot Client and VALORANT entries are allowed on the network profiles you actually use.
Riot’s firewall guidance recommends removing stale entries and adding a fresh exception rather than keeping several old rules. Delete obsolete Riot or VALORANT rules, restart the PC, then launch the client so you can approve a new prompt or add the current executables manually. If third-party antivirus is installed, pause its protection briefly only as a diagnostic test, reconnect the game, and immediately restore protection. If the error disappears while protection is paused, create a narrowly scoped game exception instead of leaving antivirus disabled.

5. Eliminate background-process conflicts with a clean boot
Overlay tools, hardware monitors, aggressive antivirus modules, capture software, and development utilities can interfere with launching or updating. Riot identifies background-process interference and the DevOverrideEnable setting as possible launch blockers.
A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential services disabled:
- Press
Win+R, entermsconfig, and open System Configuration. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart Windows and try VALORANT.
- If the game works, re-enable services and startup items in small groups until the conflict returns; then update or remove the item responsible.
Do not randomly edit the registry to change DevOverrideEnable. If you knowingly enabled that setting for developer tooling, undo it using the tool’s documented procedure or Riot’s support instructions. If you do not recognize it, collect logs instead of deleting unrelated registry values.
6. Clear local cache safely and update the graphics driver
Corrupted local data can prevent the client from authenticating, patching, or handing control to the game. Close every Riot process first. In File Explorer, enter %LOCALAPPDATA% in the address bar and locate the Riot Games and VALORANT folders identified by Riot’s launch guidance. Rather than permanently deleting them immediately, rename a suspected cache folder with a suffix such as .old. Start the client; it will recreate required cache data. If the test changes nothing, you can restore the original folder or remove the backup after confirming that you do not need its contents.

Keep configuration and logs separate from disposable cache. VALORANT configuration is stored under %LOCALAPPDATA%VALORANTSavedConfig; back it up before making changes if you use custom settings. A graphics driver that is outdated or damaged can also stop the game after the client has authenticated. Install the current driver supplied for your GPU by its manufacturer, choose a clean-install option when offered, and restart Windows before testing again. If the failure began immediately after a driver update, rolling back to the previous stable driver is a reasonable diagnostic comparison.

7. Repair Vanguard when initialization is the failure
Vanguard is a separate component from the game client. Codes 44 and 45 point toward Vanguard initialization or a required reboot, and a generic unknown error can conceal the same condition. First restart Windows and allow all pending updates to finish. Launch VALORANT once more; do not repeatedly click Play while Vanguard is still waiting for a reboot.
If Vanguard still will not initialize, uninstall Vanguard from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows), select Riot Vanguard, and choose Uninstall. Restart Windows, open the Riot Client, and launch VALORANT so Vanguard can reinstall. Restart again if prompted. This sequence changes the anti-cheat component but does not by itself erase your account or game settings.
8. Repair or clean-reinstall VALORANT only after lower-risk tests
Persistent corruption or a failed update may require a clean reinstall. Before removing the game, confirm that service status is normal and that firewall, network, clean-boot, cache, driver, and Vanguard checks have been completed. Record your custom configuration and collect logs first. Uninstall VALORANT through Windows’ installed-apps screen, restart, download the current installer from Riot, and allow the Riot Client to complete every update before launching.

A reinstall cannot fix a live Riot outage, a blocked network, or an incompatible security policy. If the same message returns on a fresh installation, stop repeating the reinstall and escalate with evidence.

What to send Riot Player Support
Open a Riot Player Support ticket when the error survives the sequence above, appears on a known-good connection, or affects only your account. Include the exact screenshot, the time and timezone of each attempt, whether another network or PC changes the result, and any displayed code. Mention the September 2026 wrong-code warning so the agent knows not to overinterpret the number.
Attach logs rather than paraphrasing the error:
- Use Riot Repair Tool if Support asks for an automated collection.
- Riot Client logs:
%localappdata%Riot GamesRiot ClientLogs. - VALORANT configuration:
%LOCALAPPDATA%VALORANTSavedConfig. - Game logs:
%localappdata%VALORANTsavedLogs.
Do not remove these folders before copying them. Logs can reveal whether the client timed out, was denied by a firewall, failed to start Vanguard, or crashed while loading a driver. That evidence is more actionable than the generic sentence on the screen.
When the message comes back after a successful launch
If VALORANT launches once and then fails again, compare what changed between attempts. Re-enable clean-boot services one group at a time, restore VPN or proxy software separately, and watch for antivirus or driver updates. A repeatable failure immediately after one change identifies a stronger suspect than an intermittent code.
Keep the original screenshot and the first failing log set. Because Riot has acknowledged that some displayed codes are wrong, the sequence of events, timestamps, and logs may be the only reliable way to distinguish a network failure from a client or Vanguard failure.
The practical takeaway
“We Have Encountered an Unknown Error” is a generic sign-in or launch failure, not a single fault with one universal fix. Restart the Riot Client and Windows, check Riot service status, test a direct connection, refresh firewall rules, isolate background software, rebuild cache and drivers, then repair Vanguard. Reserve a clean reinstall for cases where those checks and the collected evidence point to damaged files. If the error remains, send Riot the complete screenshot and the specified logs so Support can work from the underlying failure rather than the ambiguous wording.
