Valve Adds Steam Deck FPS Distribution Charts for Verified Games

Valve added Steam Deck framerate-distribution charts to Steamworks for Verified games. The opt-in session data adds context beyond averages, but it is not a controlled FPS benchmark or a player-facing rating.

Valve added Steam Deck framerate-distribution charts to Steamworks on October 1, 2026. Developers can use them to see how sampled sessions spread across framerate ranges—not just what the average framerate was. The charts are for Steam Deck Verified titles and are developer-facing, not a new FPS rating for players browsing Steam.

Where developers can find the charts

In Steamworks, open Technical Tools > Steam Hardware Compatibility Review. For eligible titles, the framerate-distribution chart appears alongside the existing average-framerate and customer-feedback charts. Valve’s announcement says the data is currently available to titles that are Steam Deck Verified; it does not announce a player-facing chart on store pages or Steam Deck devices. What the distribution shows—and how it differs from an average

An average condenses observations into one number. A distribution shows how observations fall across framerate ranges, which can reveal a mix that the average conceals—for example, sessions clustered in different ranges rather than consistently near the average.

The chart summarizes anonymized data from participating Steam Deck players who have opted in. It reflects sampled sessions, not a controlled benchmark run under fixed conditions. Valve notes that the sampled time can include loading screens and other time beyond gameplay, and that player-set framerate limits and docked play on higher-refresh external displays can affect the observations. How to interpret a low-framerate range

A low observed range is a clue to investigate, not proof that a game is performing poorly. Before drawing conclusions, developers should account for the play context represented in the sample:

  • Framerate caps: Players may set a limit below what the game could otherwise produce.
  • External displays: Docked play on a higher-refresh display can change observed results.
  • Non-gameplay time: Loading screens, menus, and other sampled periods can pull observations away from gameplay performance.

Because the data comes from opt-in player sessions, it is useful diagnostic context for spotting patterns in real-world use, but it is not a lab benchmark or a promise of the framerate every player will experience. Valve does not give a percentage or session count for opt-in participation in the announcement. Steamworks Development’s announcement, reproduced by GameDev.net

What Steam Deck Verified does—and does not—mean for FPS

Valve’s published Deck Verified criteria assess four compatibility areas: input, display, seamlessness, and system support. They cover matters such as controller support, readable text, navigable launchers, and compatibility with Proton and middleware, including anti-cheat. The criteria page does not set a minimum FPS threshold, so a Verified badge should not be read as a guarantee of a particular framerate. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified criteria
