Short answer: Valve Index works with either the original HTC Vive (1.0) or Valve (2.0) SteamVR base stations, but you cannot combine those generations in one tracking setup. It needs a VR-ready PC, a DisplayPort 1.2 or newer connection, USB, SteamVR, and at least one base station; two are recommended for room-scale play. Index controllers also work with compatible HTC Vive and Vive Pro headsets, and Valve sells separate left- and right-hand replacements, face gaskets, and replacement tethers.
What Valve Index is compatible with
Valve Index is a PC-tethered SteamVR headset rather than a standalone device. The headset, controllers and tracking hardware must all connect to a computer that meets SteamVR requirements. You need a VR-ready graphics card, a DisplayPort connection, USB, the SteamVR software, and at least one SteamVR-tracking base station.

- Computer: Windows 10, SteamOS or Linux is supported.
- Graphics minimum: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD RX 480.
- Graphics recommendation: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or better.
- Video connection: DisplayPort 1.2 or newer. HDMI and DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters are not supported.
- USB: USB 2.0 or newer is required for the headset; USB 3.0 or newer is needed for the headset’s pass-through cameras.
- Tracking: At least one SteamVR base station, with two recommended for most room-scale spaces.
A computer can meet the graphics requirement and still fail to provide a usable Index setup if it lacks a native DisplayPort output, suitable USB ports or enough clear play space. Check those physical connections before buying replacement hardware.
Which base stations work with Valve Index?
Index supports both generations of SteamVR Lighthouse base stations:

| Base-station generation | Works with Index? | Can it be mixed with the other generation? | Best replacement choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0, originally HTC-branded | Yes | No | Use another 1.0 station if the room already has 1.0 hardware |
| 2.0, Valve-branded | Yes | No | Use another 2.0 station if the room already has 2.0 hardware |
The important rule is generation matching. A 1.0 station and a 2.0 station may each work with Index independently, but they will not work together in the same VR setup. When replacing a failed unit, identify the generation of every station already mounted in the room before ordering.
One station or two?
Steam Support specifies one base station as the minimum for Index and two as the recommended configuration. One can be used for seated or standing-only play, but two stations generally provide more reliable coverage and fewer tracking dropouts. Room-scale play should be planned around two stations unless the play area is unusually constrained.
When are additional stations useful?
For spaces larger than 5 m by 5 m (about 16 ft by 16 ft), Steam says additional stations can improve coverage and tracking accuracy. Additional units must still be from the same generation as the stations already in that setup. More stations do not make 1.0 and 2.0 hardware interoperable.

Can you use Vive controllers with Index?
Index uses SteamVR Tracking, so controller compatibility depends on the headset and tracking system rather than the controller being branded “Index.” Valve’s Index controller listing identifies compatibility with Valve Index, HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro headsets that support SteamVR Tracking. It also lists compatibility with Valve, HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro base stations.
Practical compatibility cases
- Index headset with Index controllers: the intended pairing.
- Index headset with compatible Vive controllers: possible when the controllers and base stations use a supported SteamVR Tracking setup.
- Vive or Vive Pro headset with Index controllers: supported when the headset uses SteamVR Tracking and compatible base stations.
- Mixed base-station generations: not supported, regardless of which controllers are used.
Pairing is performed in SteamVR. Turn on the headset and tracking hardware, open SteamVR, and use the controller-pairing command in the SteamVR interface when a controller is not already associated with the computer. A controller can be electrically functional yet fail to track if the room’s base stations are absent, blocked or from incompatible generations.
Space and room setup requirements
Steam’s Index setup guidance calls for at least 2 m by 1.5 m (6.5 ft by 5 ft) of clear space for room-scale play. Remove furniture, pets and other obstacles from the tracked area; seated or standing-only use needs less space because you are not walking around the room.

- Measure the play area. Confirm that the usable, obstacle-free rectangle is at least 2 m by 1.5 m for room-scale use.
- Choose matching stations. Install two 1.0 stations or two 2.0 stations for the normal room-scale arrangement. Do not mix generations.
- Mount and aim the stations. Place them where they can see the play area without furniture or other objects blocking the optical path.
- Connect the headset. Use a native DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer output and a supported USB port. Do not substitute HDMI or a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter.
- Install SteamVR. Let SteamVR detect the headset, controllers and base stations, then complete its room-setup procedure.
- Update the graphics driver. Steam’s setup guidance recommends current drivers before running VR.
- Run the VR-readiness test. Use the official SteamVR readiness test to check whether the computer is likely to deliver acceptable performance.
For seated or standing-only play, one station is allowed, although Steam still recommends two for reliability. Tracking quality depends on an unobstructed view of the station sensors; a large room is not the only cause of lost tracking.

Valve Index replacement controllers
Replacement Index controllers are side-specific. The official catalog lists a Valve Index Replacement Left Controller and a Valve Index Replacement Right Controller as separate products. Order the side that has failed rather than assuming a pair is included.
| Replacement | Use | Compatibility listed by Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Valve Index Replacement Left Controller | Replaces the left-hand Index controller | Valve Index, HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro headsets using SteamVR Tracking; Valve, HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro base stations |

Replacing only one controller
A single left or right replacement is appropriate when the other controller still works and you want to preserve your existing pair. After connecting the replacement, open SteamVR and pair it through the controller setup. If the new controller powers on but is not tracked, check that the base stations are awake, unobstructed and from the correct generation before assuming the controller is defective.

How to choose a replacement base station
- Inspect the installed stations. Determine whether the room uses 1.0 HTC-branded stations or 2.0 Valve-branded stations.
- Match the generation. Buy a replacement from the same generation. Index accepts either generation, but a 1.0 and a 2.0 station cannot be combined.
- Check coverage needs. Keep at least two stations for normal room-scale reliability. If the play area exceeds 5 m by 5 m, consider additional stations of that same generation.
- Re-run SteamVR room setup. After mounting or replacing a station, let SteamVR rediscover the hardware and repeat the room-setup process if the play space or station positions changed.
Do not buy a newer-generation station simply because it is newer if the rest of the room uses 1.0 hardware; the mixed-generation restriction is more important than the age of an individual unit.
Troubleshooting common compatibility problems
SteamVR cannot see a base station
- Confirm the station is powered and has an unobstructed view of the play area.
- Check that every station is the same generation.
- Restart SteamVR after reconnecting power.
- If the problem began after a replacement, verify that the replacement is the correct 1.0 or 2.0 model rather than relying on the seller’s shorthand description.
The headset has a black screen or no video
- Connect the headset to a native DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer output on the graphics card.
- Remove HDMI and DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters; Steam states that Index does not support them.
- Check the USB connection and try a supported port.
- Update the graphics driver and restart SteamVR.
- If the issue follows a damaged cable, compare the connector fit and part name with the official replacement tether listing.
One controller will not pair or track
- Verify that you ordered the correct left or right replacement.
- Charge the controller, then pair it from SteamVR’s controller setup.
- Confirm that the base stations are powered, visible to each other and from one compatible generation.
- Test the controller in a clear area; occlusion from furniture or your body can interrupt Lighthouse tracking.
Tracking works while seated but fails in room-scale play
Seated play can hide coverage problems because you remain in one small area. Recheck the 2 m by 1.5 m room-scale boundary, clear obstructions, use two matching stations and repeat SteamVR’s room setup. In areas larger than 5 m by 5 m, add same-generation stations if coverage remains inconsistent.
Buying and availability cautions
Valve’s catalog identifies the replacement left controller, replacement right controller, two-pack face gasket and replacement tether, but storefront stock is volatile. Prices, regional shipping and return terms can change, and the captured support information does not establish a definitive manufacturing end date or a permanent long-term parts-service policy. Treat a listing as current only after checking its live availability and regional delivery details.
For used hardware, ask for the exact model generation, confirm that all required accessories are present, and check whether the seller offers a return window. A used 1.0 station is not a drop-in choice for a room that already runs 2.0 stations, even though both generations are individually compatible with Index.
