The game was available for roughly six days, from February 6 to February 12.
Valve warned users who had downloaded or played it to run a full-system antivirus scan, check for unexpected software, and consider completely reformatting Windows. Independent security reporting later linked the payload to the Vidar information-stealing malware family, although Valve did not officially name the malware.

What happened with PirateFi?
PirateFi was a pirate-themed survival game published under the developer name Seaworth Interactive. It offered base building, crafting, food gathering, solo play and multiplayer features, and was presented as a beta release.

Coverage described the game as having positive-looking early reviews. Some of its promotional images and video were also reportedly reused from another survival title, Easy Survival RPG. Those details do not prove who was responsible for the malicious code, but they show that the project had limited established history when it appeared on Steam.

What Valve warned players about
Valve said that the Steam account belonging to the developer had uploaded builds containing suspected malware. The affected builds were removed, and users were advised to:
- Run a full-system scan with a trusted antivirus product.
- Look for unexpected or newly installed software.
- Consider fully reformatting the operating system to ensure malicious software had not persisted.
Valve did not publish a forensic report identifying the malware family. Public reporting also did not establish whether the malware was present in the initial release, introduced through a later update, or added through another part of the development process. The evidence confirms malicious builds were uploaded through the developer account; it does not prove that Steam’s entire infrastructure was hacked, that the developer knowingly participated, or that the developer account was compromised.

What the malware could steal
Independent security reports linked the payload to Vidar, an information stealer. That identification came from third-party analysis, not from Valve’s notification.
Infostealers in this category can target locally stored secrets such as:
- Browser cookies and active login sessions.
- Saved passwords and autofill data.
- Email, social-media and gaming credentials.
- Cryptocurrency-wallet information.
- API keys, recovery material and other application data.
Cookie theft is especially important. An attacker who obtains an authenticated session cookie may be able to access an account without first entering its password. That means changing a password and enabling two-factor authentication are important but may not be enough by themselves; affected users should also revoke existing sessions and sign in again.

This does not mean every person who downloaded PirateFi lost credentials or had an account compromised. The malware family, its behavior and the user’s exposure must be kept separate from the confirmed fact that malicious builds were distributed.
How victims may have been approached
One reported account described a Telegram approach in which a supposed moderator or recruiter offered work paying about $17 per hour and encouraged the target to download and play PirateFi. The account reportedly behaved like an automated chatbot.
This was reported by PCMag from a reader account and should be treated as an alleged distribution tactic, not as conclusively established campaign attribution.

How many people were affected?
Steam did not publish a confirmed number of affected users. Third-party estimates put downloads at roughly 800 to 1,500. That figure should not be described as the number of infected people.
These are separate questions:
- How many accounts downloaded the game?
- How many users launched the executable?
- How many systems were successfully infected?
- How many accounts had data stolen or were later compromised?
The public reporting did not establish the answers to the last three questions.

What affected players should do
If you launched PirateFi
- Stop using the computer for sensitive activity. Disconnect it from the internet if active compromise is suspected. This may limit further communication with attackers, but it cannot undo data already stolen.
- Do not change passwords on the potentially infected machine. Use a known-clean phone or computer.
- Change high-value passwords. Start with your primary email, Steam, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Discord, social accounts, financial services and cryptocurrency exchanges.
- Revoke active sessions. Use each service’s security page to sign out other devices and invalidate existing login sessions.
- Rotate other secrets. Replace recovery codes, API keys, application passwords and similar tokens that may have been stored on the computer.
- Check account activity. Look for unfamiliar logins, purchases, recovery addresses, phone numbers, email-forwarding rules or messages sent to contacts.
- Run a full security scan. Windows Security and other reputable tools can help identify remaining files, but a clean scan cannot prove that credentials or cookies were not stolen earlier.
- Reset or reinstall Windows. If the malicious executable ran, a clean operating-system reinstall is the most reliable way to remove persistent malware. Deleting the Steam folder alone is not sufficient.
- After reinstalling, update and restore carefully. Install Windows updates and applications from official sources. Restore only trusted personal files, scan backups before opening them, and re-enable multifactor authentication.
If you downloaded it but never launched it
The risk is lower because malicious executables generally need to run to perform their intended theft. It is not automatically zero: installers, scripts or automatically executed components can create exceptions.

Delete the game, scan the computer, check for unexpected files or programs, and change high-value credentials if you cannot be certain it never ran. A full reset is most strongly justified when the game was launched, suspicious software appeared, or account activity indicates compromise.
If antivirus blocked it
Allow the security product to quarantine or remove the detected files, then run a second full scan. Review startup items, scheduled tasks and unexpected applications. Rotate sensitive credentials from a clean device and consider reinstalling Windows if the executable ran before detection or if account theft is suspected. An antivirus alert does not establish that every stolen session or credential has been recovered.
If an account was hijacked
- Use the affected service’s official account-recovery page.
- Preserve login alerts, suspicious emails, transaction records and other evidence.
- Contact banks or cryptocurrency exchanges immediately if financial information may be exposed.
- Warn contacts not to open messages sent from the compromised account.
- For cryptocurrency theft, save wallet addresses, transaction IDs and timestamps; recovery is uncertain.
Is Steam safe after this incident?
The PirateFi case demonstrates the trust users place in developer-published game builds and updates. A store page, reviews and the Steam distribution channel do not guarantee that every uploaded executable is harmless.
It does not, by itself, show that the Steam client or Valve’s entire store infrastructure was breached. The public record establishes that malicious builds reached users through a developer account, but it does not explain exactly how the code entered the build or which review controls were involved.
Players should still use normal precautions: keep Windows and security software updated, avoid unsolicited job offers and downloads sent through chat apps, treat unusually new games with limited history cautiously, and investigate unexpected antivirus warnings rather than ignoring them.
