Valve’s reported position, posted October 4, 2026, is that “Steam for Linux is not currently supported on ARM based hardware (#4061).” The statement concerns the standard Linux desktop client; it does not mean no experimental workaround can launch, and it does not cancel Valve’s separate ARM work for Steam Frame.
What Valve’s statement means for Steam on ARM
The reported reply came while a Valve-associated account closed a Remote Play issue as a duplicate and pointed its reporter to the older Steam for Linux issue #4061. Secondary coverage records the wording as: “Steam for Linux is not currently supported on ARM based hardware (#4061).” This is a support-status statement in response to an issue, not a detailed technical explanation or a published general roadmap announcement.
The older issue, opened October 12, 2015, is titled “can’t run on ARM architecture systems.” It remains open and is labeled Feature Request and reviewed. Its original report concerns missing 32-bit packages during Steam installation; the issue does not publish a roadmap or a full account of the technical barriers.
The standard Steam for Linux client targets x86_64
Valve’s Steam for Linux README specifies a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel and CPU. It also lists 512 MB RAM, 5 GB storage, and both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers and glibc. Those requirements are for the standard desktop client, and the architecture requirement is the key distinction for an ARM Linux computer: ARM64 is not x86_64.

That does not prove that every unofficial build or emulation setup will fail to start. It does mean that a successful launch through translation or a community package should not be described as ordinary, officially supported Steam for Linux on ARM.
What the October 2026 Remote Play report tested
The issue that prompted the reported reply described one ARM64 Fedora-based configuration: an AYN Odin 3 using a Qualcomm SM8750/CQ8725S platform. The reporter said V4L2 hardware decoding worked for HEVC, while AV1 was not offered despite the decoder listing AV1 support. This is a report about a particular Remote Play video-decoding path and device configuration, not a compatibility test of Steam on ARM devices generally.

Steam Frame is a separate ARM project
Valve’s Steamworks Steam Frame documentation describes a device with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip running SteamOS. Valve says its compatibility layers support other operating systems and architectures: Windows games run through Proton, while x86 32-bit and 64-bit software is translated to Arm64 through FEX.
Valve’s GDC 2026 slide deck likewise describes expanding Proton for Arm64 to allow x86 games to run on Steam Frame’s ARM chip. This is evidence of ARM development for Steam Frame’s hardware and software stack, not a general announcement that the standard Steam client is supported on any ARM Linux computer.

Could an experimental ARM Linux package work?
An Ubuntu community post describes an arm64 Steam snap that bundles the x86 Steam client with FEX to emulate amd64 and i386. The post calls it a beta test and explicitly says it is “not officially supported by Valve.” Its author reports early testing on NVIDIA DGX Spark and device-specific compatibility notes; those reports are not a guarantee that the package, Steam client, Remote Play, or a particular game will work on another ARM device.
Translation adds another compatibility layer. Even if a package launches the client, that does not establish that a game will run well—or at all—or that a device’s graphics drivers and video-decoding path will behave as expected.

Check the client, game, and feature separately
“Does Steam work?” can refer to several different things: installing and launching the Steam client, running a particular game, or using a feature such as Remote Play decoding. These are separate checks. Valve’s Steam Support guidance recommends filtering the store for Linux-compatible titles using the SteamOS + Linux filter; that game listing does not change the architecture requirements for the desktop client.
If you want a supported handheld Steam system rather than an ARM Linux experiment, Steam Deck is a Linux-based option documented in Valve’s Steam Deck booklet. That is a different hardware choice, not a workaround that makes the ARM desktop client officially supported.
