Valve says SteamOS 0.4.3, a beta-channel update for Steam Frame dated October 1, 2026, improves power efficiency and battery lifetime by up to 12% during both streamed and local gameplay. The figure is Valve’s release-note claim, not a guaranteed increase in play time: Valve says results vary by framerate and content.
What Valve says changed
Valve’s SteamOS 0.4.3 beta announcement says the update improves power efficiency and battery lifetime in both streaming and local gameplay. It gives a maximum gain of 12%, but does not state a baseline, testing method, or workload examples. That means the announcement does not establish how many additional minutes or hours a particular player should expect.
Valve’s caveat is that results vary with framerate and content. The up-to-12% figure should therefore be read as Valve’s reported maximum, not as a uniform gain across games, streaming sessions, or headset users.
Does the update cover streaming and local games?
Yes. Valve names both streaming and local gameplay in its battery-efficiency note, without publishing separate percentages for the two modes. Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. Its Steamworks documentation provides that product description.

How to try the beta
- On Steam Frame, open Settings > System > System Update Channel.
- Select the beta channel to opt in to SteamOS 0.4.3.
Valve labels the release a beta and says its features are still being tested, so the channel and available update may change.
Other VR streaming changes
The same release notes describe further VR streaming reliability improvements, including fixes for Error 17. Valve says reducing Error 17 connection issues also requires SteamVR 2.18.2 or later on the PC. At the time of the October 1, 2026 announcement, that SteamVR version was on the beta branch.
