Valve’s redesigned Steam mobile app is no longer a beta experiment. The company opened testing for a rebuilt Android and iOS app in August 2022, adding QR-code sign-in, a refreshed interface, improved Library and Store experiences, smarter notifications, and multi-account support. Valve released the redesigned app publicly in October 2022, and both platform versions continued receiving updates through 2026.
So the accurate present-day framing is not “Valve is testing” the app. It is: Valve tested and then launched a redesigned Steam mobile app.

What Valve was testing in 2022
Valve’s August 2022 beta was a substantial rebuild of the existing Steam mobile clients, not the launch of a separate Steam service. Valve said the app had been rebuilt on a new framework and given a modernized design, with changes focused on authentication, navigation, the Store, the Library, notifications, and account management.
The beta was announced on August 28, 2022, and covered both Android and iOS. The original announcement and participation details remain documented in Valve’s Steam Mobile App group.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
At the time, the redesign mattered because the older app was widely criticized in contemporary coverage and user sentiment for its dated interface and awkward mobile experience. That criticism was not a controlled usability measurement, but it explains why the rebuild attracted attention.
The biggest change: QR-code sign-in
The most visible new feature was QR-code authentication. Instead of typing a Steam username, password, and Steam Guard code into a desktop login screen, a user could scan a QR code with the Steam mobile app to authenticate the session.
QR sign-in made logging into the Steam desktop client faster and more convenient. It did not remove account security or make the phone irrelevant: it integrated Steam Guard authentication into a quicker flow. Users still needed to protect the phone, keep the Steam app secured, and reject login requests they did not initiate.

The official iOS listing also describes Steam Guard authentication and QR login.
Other improvements included in the redesign
- Improved Library access: The redesigned app made it easier to view a Steam Library and related game information from a phone.
- Modernized Store browsing: The Store was redesigned for mobile screens, with better access to games, wishlists, and personalized content.
- Smarter notifications: Notifications became more useful and more configurable instead of treating every alert the same way.
- Multiple Steam accounts: The app added support for switching between accounts, which is useful for households, shared devices, and users with separate personal or work-related accounts.
- Steam Guard and confirmations: The app continued supporting mobile authentication, trade confirmations, and Market-related confirmations.
- Updated navigation: The new framework and customizable main tabs gave Valve a more flexible base for future changes.
The redesign therefore addressed more than the login screen. QR authentication was the headline feature, but the broader goal was to make Steam’s mobile client easier to navigate and maintain.

Android
Android users joined through Google Play’s testing program. Valve directed participants through the Steam Mobile App beta group and its Google Play testing route.

iPhone and iPad users joined through Apple’s TestFlight system after receiving Valve’s invitation. Valve initially limited the iOS beta to 10,000 concurrent participants, with the possibility of adding capacity later.
Steam Client Beta requirement
Some QR-login testing also required the Steam Client Beta on the desktop computer. This was a requirement for the 2022 testing flow, not a general statement that today’s public Steam app requires the desktop beta.
The old TestFlight invitation and Google Play testing links may no longer represent an active program. Readers installing the app now should use the normal Google Play listing or Apple App Store listing.
When did the redesigned Steam app launch?
Valve’s beta did not remain a permanent experiment. The redesigned Steam mobile app was released publicly in October 2022, bringing the new interface and QR-code login to the standard Android and iOS apps. The public-release follow-up was reported by Engadget.

| August 2022 | Valve opened the beta for the rebuilt Steam mobile app on Android and iOS. |
| October 2022 | Valve released the redesigned app publicly. |
| 2025–2026 | The Android and iOS listings continued to show subsequent maintenance and feature updates. |
Google Play lists the Android app as updated March 5, 2026. Apple’s version history also includes updates through March 2026. This contradicts the idea that Valve abandoned the app, although the current build is not necessarily identical to the 2022 beta.

What the current Steam mobile app can do
Current official store listings describe Steam Mobile as a free app developed by Valve. Depending on platform and version, it can be used to:
- Browse and buy PC games.
- Manage wishlists and Store notifications.
- View personalized game news.
- Use Steam Guard mobile authentication.
- Scan QR codes to sign in.
- Review and confirm trades and Steam Community Market transactions.
- View the Library and game-related content.
- Start remote downloads to a computer.
- Access friends, groups, discussions, guides, broadcasts, Workshop content, the Market, screenshots, inventory, and wallet functions.
- Review authorized devices.
- Use multiple Steam accounts.
- Customize the app’s main tabs.
Android and iOS do not always receive updates at the same time, and labels or workflows can differ between builds. The safest expectation is that the app provides the same broad Steam mobile experience across both platforms, while individual features may behave differently.
Who should install it?
The app is particularly useful if you:
- Use Steam Guard or want a faster desktop sign-in process.
- Frequently browse, buy, or wishlist games from a phone.
- Trade items or use the Steam Community Market.
- Want to start remote downloads while away from your computer.
- Manage more than one Steam account.
- Need mobile access to Steam notifications, Library information, or community features.
It is less essential for someone who plays only on a PC, never uses Steam Guard or trading features, and has no interest in remote downloads or mobile Store access.
Security considerations
QR-code sign-in primarily improves speed and convenience. It should not be treated as an automatic security upgrade in every situation.
- Do not scan a QR code or approve a login you did not initiate.
- Keep the phone locked and use a secure device passcode or biometric protection.
- Review authorized devices if you suspect that someone accessed the account.
- Never share Steam Guard codes or approve unexpected authentication requests.
- If the phone is lost, secure the device and begin Steam’s account-recovery process promptly.
A compromised or unlocked phone can expose important Steam authentication functions. The security of QR sign-in still depends on protecting both the Steam account and the device running the app.

- Confirm that the phone has a working internet connection.
- Update Steam Mobile through Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Check for a Steam service outage before repeatedly changing passwords or credentials.
- Make sure the phone’s date and time are set automatically.
- Restart the app and then restart the phone.
- If Steam Guard was moved to a new device, use Valve’s authenticator-transfer or account-recovery process rather than deleting the app impulsively.
- Contact Steam Support if the authenticator, phone number, or account access is lost.
Exact menu names can change between Android and iOS releases, so instructions should be checked against the current build. Do not assume that uninstalling the app will safely transfer an authenticator or restore account access.
What the original coverage got right—and what it missed
The 2022 reporting correctly highlighted the rebuilt framework, redesigned interface, QR login, improved Library, notifications, and account support. Early testers also reported typical beta problems such as sluggishness and bugs. Those comments describe the beta period; they are not evidence that the current 2026 app has the same defects. Engadget’s original report provides that historical context.
Several distinctions are important:
- It was a client rebuild, not a new Steam platform. The Store, Library, authentication, and community tools were reorganized inside the existing Steam ecosystem.
- QR login was not the whole redesign. Navigation, notifications, account switching, and the mobile Library were also central changes.
- The beta links are not the current installation path. Normal users should install the public app from the official store listings.
- App availability is not identical to feature parity. Android and iOS may differ in labels, timing, and behavior.
- The app is not automatically a replacement for every communication workflow. Steam has historically offered a separate Steam Chat app, and chat capabilities can change. Check the current build rather than assuming the main app handles every chat function.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the redesigned Steam mobile app still in beta?
No. Valve began the beta in August 2022 and released the redesigned app publicly in October 2022. The current Android and iOS apps are maintained public releases.
Does Steam Mobile support QR-code login?
Yes. QR-code sign-in is a major feature of the redesigned app, though the exact flow and labels may vary by platform and app version.
Do I need the old 2022 beta links to install Steam Mobile?
No. Install the current public app from the official Google Play or Apple App Store listing. The original TestFlight and Google Play testing instructions are historical.
Is QR-code sign-in safer than entering a password?
It is faster and incorporates Steam Guard authentication, but it is not automatically safer in every situation. Protect your phone and never approve an unrecognized login.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Valve’s redesigned Steam mobile app was a meaningful 2022 modernization, not a current 2026 beta. It later shipped publicly with QR sign-in, improved Store and Library navigation, smarter notifications, multi-account support, Steam Guard tools, and remote-download features. Install the current public app if you need mobile authentication, trading confirmations, Steam shopping, or remote access—but judge Android and iOS features against the exact build on your device.
