Valve has confirmed the product and a summer 2026 shipping window; it has not confirmed a retail price. The often-repeated $1,200 figure came from a February 2025 leak, while Valve previously said it aimed to price Steam Frame below the $999 Valve Index full kit. That earlier target was later subject to revision.
What happened to the Deckard rumor?
“Deckard” was the reported codename for Valve’s next headset, not its announced retail name. Valve revealed the product as Steam Frame on November 12, 2025. The company’s Steamworks documentation now describes Steam Frame as a standalone SteamOS headset that supports SteamVR and OpenXR.
The name change matters: this is no longer an unrevealed device that might eventually appear under the Deckard name. Steam Frame is the announced product. The rumor that remains unresolved is its price.
Where did the $1,200 figure come from?
On February 26, 2025, UploadVR reported a claim from leaker Gabe Follower that Valve was targeting an end-of-2025 release for a wireless standalone headset at $1,200 for a full bundle. The reported bundle was said to include first-party games or demos, and the leak claimed Valve might sell it at a loss. Valve did not confirm those details. The figure was a reported target, not a published price or verified bundle specification. UploadVR’s account of the leak remains useful as a record of what was claimed, not as a current price listing.

When is Steam Frame expected, and what is still unknown?
Valve initially described Steam Frame as an early-2026 product when it announced the headset. Valve later confirmed a summer 2026 shipping window. As of the latest reporting available in August 2026, the exact public launch date and final retail price had not been announced. UploadVR reported the revised window and pricing uncertainty.
A report dated July 29, 2026 said Steam Frame received FCC equipment authorization in the United States. That is a regulatory milestone, not a retail launch announcement or proof that units are available to buy. The FCC authorization report does not establish an exact on-sale date.
What has Valve confirmed about the headset?
Steam Frame runs a VR version of SteamOS and is built around two use cases: running supported software on the headset itself and wirelessly streaming more demanding PC games. Valve lists support for SteamVR and OpenXR. Its documentation describes native ARM64 and Android application support, alongside compatibility approaches for some other software. Valve’s Steam Frame developer documentation outlines the supported development and execution models.

These details are reported in UploadVR’s announcement and specification coverage; Valve’s official Steamworks documentation is the primary reference for supported software standards and development.
Does Steam Frame need a gaming PC?
No PC is required to use supported standalone applications, but that does not mean Steam Frame can run the full PC VR library locally. It uses a mobile-oriented ARM chipset and supports native ARM64 and Android software as well as selected compatibility-layer experiences. The most demanding PC VR games, including titles such as Half-Life: Alyx, should be approached as gaming-PC use cases rather than guaranteed native headset games. UploadVR’s coverage of Valve’s announcement describes the gap between standalone capability and high-end PC VR.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Steam Frame is standalone in hardware, but it is not intended to replace a gaming PC for the most demanding PC VR software. Owning a Steam Deck does not guarantee the same compatibility: Steam Deck uses x86 hardware, while Steam Frame uses ARM hardware and different compatibility technology.
How wireless PC VR works
For PC VR, an included USB adapter creates a dedicated 6GHz Wi-Fi 6E link between the headset and host PC. The headset’s ordinary Wi-Fi handles internet and general network traffic. This separates the PC-to-headset stream from routine network use, but does not eliminate compression, latency, radio interference, or the limits of the host PC. Distance, obstructions, nearby wireless devices, and local radio conditions can all affect performance.
Steam Frame does not accept DisplayPort or HDMI video input. Buyers who require a wired, uncompressed video connection should consider a conventional PC VR headset instead. The wireless design and absence of a video input are described in UploadVR’s product coverage.

How credible is a $1,200 price now?
$1,200 remains possible as a premium full-bundle estimate, but there is no confirmed Steam Frame MSRP. Valve previously said it aimed to sell the headset for less than the $999 Valve Index full kit. Later, the company said memory shortages meant it needed to revisit exact pricing and timing. The earlier sub-$999 objective was a goal, not a guaranteed price, and the leak’s $1,200 figure may have referred to a bundle rather than the headset alone. UploadVR’s report on the summer 2026 schedule covers Valve’s earlier price ambition and its subsequent reassessment.
Those two signals do not establish a likely retail price on their own. The $1,200 leak is old and unverified; the sub-$999 goal is also not a final commitment. Comparisons will only be meaningful once Valve specifies what is included, the storage tier, regional pricing, and applicable taxes.

| Valve Index | Steam Frame | |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | PC-tethered DisplayPort headset | Standalone headset with wireless PC streaming; no DisplayPort or HDMI input |
| Tracking | External Lighthouse base stations | Inside-out tracking; no base stations required or supported |
| Primary use | PC VR | Wireless access to PC VR plus standalone VR and non-VR software |
| Price status | $999 full-kit benchmark cited in Valve’s earlier Steam Frame positioning | Final price not announced in the latest reporting |
Steam Frame is not simply an Index with newer screens. Index uses a wired PC architecture and Lighthouse tracking; Steam Frame emphasizes standalone operation and wireless streaming. That shifts the trade-off toward convenience and Steam ecosystem integration, rather than preserving a direct, uncompressed wired connection. The product details are covered by UploadVR and the report on Valve’s pricing and schedule statements.

What does “Steam Frame Verified” mean?
Valve introduced a verification program to signal whether software meets performance and usability thresholds when run on Steam Frame itself. UploadVR reported that VR titles must reach at least 72 frames per second at 1728 × 1728 during normal play, while flat-screen games shown on a large virtual screen must reach 30fps at 1280 × 720. These are reported standalone thresholds, not a promise that every Steam game will run natively or that streamed PC versions will meet the same criteria. See UploadVR’s explanation of the verification program.
Who should consider Steam Frame—and who should wait?
It may suit you if
- You already have a capable gaming PC and want a wireless way to play PC VR.
- You value Steam library integration and are comfortable with a headset that also supports selected standalone apps.
- You prefer inside-out tracking and do not want to install Lighthouse base stations.
- You are willing to wait for a confirmed price, availability, and launch software details before deciding.
It may not suit you if
- You need lossless wired DisplayPort video or a conventional tethered PC headset.
- You do not own a gaming PC and expect demanding PC VR games to run locally at high fidelity.
- You want an inexpensive standalone headset or a mature, broad standalone catalog from day one.
- You expect color mixed-reality passthrough; Steam Frame’s default passthrough is monochrome.
Its gamepad-oriented controller input may also be useful for some non-VR games, but that does not guarantee every flat-screen Steam title will be comfortable or fully compatible in a headset. Resolution and refresh rate alone cannot settle the comfort question either; fit, lens clarity, weight distribution, and individual IPD remain important.
