Valve’s New Steam Hardware Lineup: Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller Explained

Valve’s three-device Steam hardware strategy is taking shape—but the Steam Machine, Steam Controller and Steam Frame have different prices, schedules and trade-offs.

Valve announced three connected hardware products on November 12, 2025: the Steam Machine, a living-room SteamOS gaming PC; the Steam Frame, a standalone and PC-streamed VR headset; and a new Steam Controller built around trackpads, gyro aiming, and Steam Input.

They are not one simultaneous console launch. As of August 18, 2026, the Steam Controller has launched, Steam Machine reservations are shipping in batches, and Steam Frame still lacks a confirmed final US price and broadly established retail availability. Together, the products show Valve trying to make SteamOS and Steam Input the software foundation for portable, living-room, and VR gaming—although the cost and availability of that ecosystem remain significant questions.

Valve’s three-device hardware strategy

Valve has not formally described the move as going “all-in” on hardware. That is an editorial characterization. The more precise description is that Valve is expanding Steam beyond the Steam Deck into several coordinated form factors:

  • Steam Deck: portable SteamOS gaming.
  • Steam Machine: a compact PC for television and living-room play.
  • Steam Frame: standalone VR combined with wireless PC streaming.
  • Steam Controller: a configurable input device for SteamOS and PC games.

The strategy is not to create a closed platform like PlayStation or Xbox. Valve presents Steam Machine as an open, PC-oriented device without a subsidized-console business model, mandatory subscription, or locked storefront. The ambition is instead to make Steam a convenient operating environment across more hardware categories.

Valve’s original announcement promised all three products for 2026. Component shortages and higher memory and storage costs later forced the company to revisit pricing, production quantities, and schedules. The products have therefore followed different paths rather than arriving as a single ecosystem launch.

Steam Machine: a $1,049 living-room PC

The Steam Machine is best understood as a compact, prebuilt SteamOS gaming PC with a console-like interface—not as a conventional closed console.

Valve opened reservations for four US configurations on June 22, 2026:

Configuration US price
512GB $1,049
512GB with Steam Controller $1,128
2TB $1,349
2TB with Steam Controller $1,428

The 2TB versions include red fabric and solid walnut faceplates. The published prices include VAT where applicable; the figures above are the relevant US prices supplied for this lineup.

Valve said the first reservation batch would begin shipping on June 29. Reservations used a randomized queue intended to reduce bots and scalping. The initial signup window was scheduled to close June 25 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. Customers needed a Steam account in good standing and a Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026.

Valve’s reservation and shipping information

Why the Steam Machine is not a console bargain

At $1,049, the Steam Machine is materially more expensive than the optimistic expectations that surrounded a new Valve living-room box. That price makes comparisons with small-form-factor PCs and equivalent prebuilts more useful than a simple comparison with a subsidized PlayStation or Xbox.

The premium buys a compact, turnkey SteamOS system and Valve’s software integration. It does not buy access to console-exclusive libraries, and it does not guarantee that every Steam game will work perfectly. SteamOS still involves PC-style compatibility questions involving launchers, anti-cheat systems, mods, and Windows-only software.

Storage is another practical concern. A 512GB drive can fill quickly with modern PC games, making the 2TB model easier to live with but significantly more expensive. Buyers should also avoid interpreting Valve’s “up to six times more powerful than Steam Deck” positioning as a universal sixfold frame-rate increase; performance varies by game, settings, resolution, and compatibility layer.

SteamOS beyond Valve’s own box

The Steam Machine matters strategically because Valve says SteamOS 3.8 can run on a user’s own living-room PC. The current official support information identifies AMD GPUs as the supported path for the described installation, with broader support planned. A self-built or third-party SteamOS system could cost less or deliver more performance, but the buyer takes on hardware compatibility, setup, troubleshooting, and warranty responsibilities.

SteamOS 3.8 support information

Steam Controller: more than an Xbox-style gamepad

The new Steam Controller is designed around Steam Input rather than a fixed console control layout. Its hardware includes two trackpads, a gyroscope, capacitive sensing on the trackpads and sticks, wireless operation, and capacitive Grip Sense sensors in the handles.

Those features have practical uses:

  • Trackpads can emulate mouse movement for strategy, simulation, older, and mouse-heavy games.
  • Gyro aiming can supplement sticks or provide finer camera control.
  • Steam Input supports per-game remapping and community layouts.
  • Grip Sense can activate or suppress gyro, open menus or weapon wheels, or trigger an action when fingers leave the grips.

The controller’s official US price is best described as $79 implied by Valve’s bundles: $1,128 minus the $1,049 base Steam Machine price, and $1,428 minus $1,349. That is a bundle-derived price rather than a directly quoted standalone MSRP in the supplied material.

Demand exceeded Valve’s initial expectations. Reservation pages showed estimated order windows of September 2026, December 2026, and 2027, with new reservations receiving a 2027 estimate. That makes the Controller a poor choice for anyone planning an immediate multi-controller living-room setup.

The learning curve is part of the product

This is not simply a replacement for a conventional console controller. Its advantages appear when a player is willing to tune layouts and learn a different relationship with trackpads, gyro, and capacitive inputs. A buyer who only wants familiar analog-stick controls may get less value from it than from a standard gamepad.

Valve documents several configuration paths. To adjust Grip Sense sensitivity:

  1. Open Steam or Big Picture Mode.
  2. Go to Steam > Settings > Controller.
  3. Select Details for the controller.
  4. Open Calibration & Advanced Settings.
  5. Choose Grip Sensors.

To use grip sensors for gyro activation, open a game’s controller layout editor, set gyro behavior to Gyro to Mouse, open the gyro behavior settings, select the desired activation inputs, and choose the grip sensors, trackpads, triggers, or capacitive stick sensors. Multiple inputs can use Any or All behavior. To make Grip Sense behave like a button when fingers lift, open the relevant assignment and enable Invert Input.

Mixed mouse-and-controller input can also produce confusing prompts, UI flicker, or camera stutter in some games. Steam Input can mitigate many problems, but it cannot make every game’s input handling equally polished.

Valve’s Steam Hardware documentation and updates

Steam Frame: Valve’s streaming-first VR headset

Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset, but “standalone” should not be read as “a complete replacement for a gaming PC.” Valve’s design combines local software with wireless streaming from a more powerful PC. For demanding PC VR games, streaming is expected to be central to the experience.

Standalone mode

In standalone mode, compatible VR and non-VR software runs locally on the headset. That makes the experience independent of a computer for supported titles, but local performance is constrained by the headset’s mobile, ARM-class hardware. A demanding PC VR game should not automatically be assumed to run locally at full quality.

Wireless PC-streaming mode

Streaming requires a capable gaming PC and a suitable wireless network. Router placement, interference, bandwidth, latency, and host-PC performance all matter. Poor conditions can introduce delay or compression artifacts. Valve’s wireless adapter is part of its effort to make that link more reliable, but preliminary adapter support in SteamOS beta software is evidence of development and launch preparation—not proof that the consumer product has broadly launched.

Eye tracking is intended to support foveated streaming, potentially reducing the amount of image data that must be rendered at full detail. That benefit depends on software support and should not be assumed for every title.

Hardware and compatibility details

Specifications reported from Valve-provided information include dual 2160×2160 LCD panels, configurable refresh rates from 72Hz to 120Hz, and an experimental 144Hz mode. The front box is approximately 185 grams, while the complete system with the default facial interface, speakers, strap, and rear battery is approximately 440 grams. The headset uses four onboard grayscale tracking cameras, monochrome passthrough, eye tracking, a replaceable battery strap, and a rear 21.6Wh battery.

These are Valve-provided or Valve-supplied specifications, not independent measurements. Battery life, comfort, lens clarity, field of view, and tracking quality should not be presented as settled until final retail specifications and independent testing are available.

Steam Frame’s GDC 2026 developer material distinguishes standalone compatibility from streamed play. Its “Steam Frame Verified” standalone targets include VR titles at 90 frames per second, 2D titles at 30 frames per second at 1280×720, legible UI, and full playability with Steam Frame controllers. A game being available on Steam is therefore not the same as being natively compatible with Steam Frame.

What launched, and when?

  • November 12, 2025: Valve announced Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and the new Steam Controller for 2026.
  • February 4, 2026: Valve said pricing and scheduling needed to be revisited because of memory and storage shortages and higher costs.
  • May 2026: Steam Controller reservations opened.
  • June 22, 2026: Steam Machine reservations opened.
  • June 29, 2026: Valve said the first Steam Machine reservation batch would begin shipping.
  • August 18, 2026: Steam Frame’s final US price and broadly confirmed consumer availability remained unresolved in the available official material.

The confirmed issue is that Valve cited component cost and availability problems affecting RAM and storage. It is not established that one particular company, market, or cause alone created those shortages.

Valve’s February hardware update

Who should buy each device?

Choose Steam Machine if:

  • You want a compact, turnkey SteamOS PC for a television.
  • You already own a substantial Steam library.
  • You prefer a console-like interface but want PC storefront flexibility.
  • You do not want to build or configure a small-form-factor PC.

Look elsewhere if you need Windows-only applications, extensive modding tools, non-Steam launchers with minimal friction, easy component upgrades, or the lowest possible price. A faster existing gaming PC may also make the Steam Machine redundant.

Choose Steam Frame if:

  • You are a PC VR enthusiast interested in both local and wireless-streamed play.
  • You value self-tracking without external base stations.
  • You already own, or plan to own, a capable gaming PC and strong wireless network.
  • You are comfortable waiting for final pricing and retail availability.

Wait if you need a confirmed price, immediate availability, or a headset that can run every demanding PC VR game locally. For a cheaper and more established standalone VR ecosystem, Meta Quest remains the relevant alternative to evaluate; Steam Frame’s differentiator is its Steam and PC-streaming focus.

Choose Steam Controller if:

  • You want gyro aiming, trackpad mouse control, or deep per-game remapping.
  • You play strategy, simulation, older, or mouse-heavy games from the sofa.
  • You use Steam Deck or SteamOS and want a living-room controller.
  • You are willing to configure layouts and tune sensitivity.

Choose a conventional controller instead if you want immediate plug-and-play controls, dislike profile configuration, or need several controllers now. The reservation backlog may be the decisive issue even for interested buyers.

How the lineup compares with the alternatives

Steam Deck remains the direct Valve alternative for portable SteamOS gaming. It is less suited to high-end living-room performance or dedicated VR, but it offers the simplest lower-cost entry into Valve’s hardware ecosystem.

Meta Quest offers a more established standalone VR route and broader consumer availability. Steam Frame is aimed more directly at users who want SteamOS, native Steam software, and wireless PC VR streaming.

ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go are Windows handheld PCs. They offer broader launcher and application compatibility, but less of SteamOS’s console-like integration.

PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X remain simpler closed-console choices with their own platform libraries and services. Neither provides the open PC-style access to a Steam library that Steam Machine is designed to offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A self-built or third-party SteamOS living-room PC may provide better value or more performance, but current official guidance for the described installation path specifically identifies AMD GPU support. The trade-off is configuration and support responsibility instead of Valve’s turnkey experience.
