Valve’s ROG Ally SteamOS support is real—but it’s not the same as a Steam Deck

Valve’s ROG Ally SteamOS support is real, but it is not the same as turning the Ally into a Steam Deck. Here’s what works, what you lose and who should install it.

Yes, Valve really did confirm SteamOS support for the ASUS ROG Ally. Valve designer Lawrence Yang confirmed the plan in August 2024, but that announcement was a commitment to future support—not an instant, polished SteamOS replacement for Windows.

As of August 18, 2026, Valve documents SteamOS installation on the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X, with ongoing fixes for Ally-family controls, TDP management, audio, SD cards, power management and crashes. The important qualification is that “installable,” “compatible,” “actively developed” and “officially supported” are not identical categories.

What Valve actually confirmed in 2024

The original story was published on August 14, 2024. Valve designer Lawrence Yang confirmed to The Verge, in comments reported by OSNews, that Valve intended to support the ASUS ROG Ally with SteamOS.

That mattered because the ROG Ally was one of the Steam Deck’s most direct competitors, but it shipped with Windows. Valve’s statement pointed toward SteamOS becoming usable on hardware beyond Valve’s own handheld.

  • [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.

It did not mean that:

  • a finished general-purpose installer was immediately available;
  • every ROG Ally model had already been fully validated;
  • the Ally had become a Steam Deck;
  • ASUS utilities and firmware features would automatically work in Linux;
  • Valve would provide the same hardware troubleshooting and warranty support it provides for a Steam Deck; or
  • ASUS would begin shipping the Ally with SteamOS preinstalled.

The confirmation followed SteamOS release-note references to support for the Ally’s additional hardware keys. In other words, it was a genuine development commitment, but it was not an announcement that owners could replace Windows immediately with a finished Valve-supported experience.

What changed between 2024 and 2026?

Valve’s position is considerably more concrete now. Its SteamOS installation and recovery documentation lists the ASUS ROG Ally and ROG Ally X among additional AMD-powered PCs that can receive SteamOS.

Valve’s release notes also show continuing work on third-party handhelds, including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • controller support for the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally series;
  • TDP control improvements;
  • speaker-audio fixes;
  • SD-card reliability improvements affecting ASUS ROG Xbox Ally hardware;
  • a fix for power consumption caused by the fingerprint reader while an Ally was shut down; and
  • crash fixes affecting international ASUS ROG Xbox Ally models.

Those updates are evidence of meaningful hardware support, not proof that every hardware revision behaves identically. The original ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X should not be treated as one interchangeable device. Their processors, memory configurations, wireless hardware, sensors, controls and firmware can differ.

Valve’s August 18, 2026 release information identifies SteamOS 3.8.16 as the latest stable release, while SteamOS 3.8.25 remains on Beta/Preview channels. That distinction matters: a fix documented in a beta build may not yet be present in the stable installation most users receive. Check the current SteamOS release notes before changing channels or troubleshooting a specific feature.

Is the ROG Ally officially supported?

The answer depends on what “supported” means. Valve’s installation documentation explicitly describes installing SteamOS on the Ally, but it also warns that Steam Support may have limited ability to troubleshoot hardware-specific problems on devices outside its officially supported hardware category. Valve directs users with problems on additional PCs toward the SteamOS GitHub and community troubleshooting.

Valve’s general SteamOS page separately says that the officially supported devices “right now” are Steam Deck and Legion Go S, while broader compatibility with other AMD-powered handhelds is a work in progress. It also explains that companies shipping devices with SteamOS require licensing for the Steam Client, SteamOS branding and Valve trademarks.

That produces several useful support tiers:

Term What it means
Installable Valve provides an image or instructions that can be used on the hardware.
Compatible Core components such as graphics, display, controls and audio work to some degree.
Actively developed Valve is adding support and fixing bugs for the hardware or wider AMD handheld category.
Officially supported Valve accepts the device as a supported troubleshooting target with a defined support path.
Powered by SteamOS The manufacturer ships a licensed, officially branded SteamOS product.

The Ally clearly benefits from documented installation and ongoing compatibility work. That does not automatically make every Ally model a certified “Powered by SteamOS” device or guarantee the same support experience as a Steam Deck.

How to install SteamOS on an ROG Ally

Valve’s documented process is broadly straightforward, but it is still an operating-system replacement and should be treated as such. A mistake during recovery can erase Windows and the files stored on the internal drive.

  1. Back up your data. Copy personal files, game saves and any device-specific configuration you may need later.
  2. Prepare recovery media. Valve requires a USB drive with at least 8GB of capacity. The drive will be formatted when the recovery image is written.
  3. Download the current SteamOS recovery image from Valve’s installation documentation.
  4. Write the image to the USB drive. On Windows, Valve recommends using Rufus. Use a reliable drive rather than one already showing errors.
  5. Connect the recovery media to the Ally. A USB-C hub or adapter can be useful if the handheld also needs power, a keyboard or other peripherals.
  6. Boot from the recovery media and select the appropriate recovery or installation option.
  7. Reboot and complete SteamOS setup after the installation finishes.

Valve may change recovery-menu labels or installation choices, so use the current instructions rather than relying on an old video or guide. Before selecting an option, confirm whether it reinstalls the operating system, preserves existing partitions or restores the entire internal drive.

Before replacing Windows

  • Keep the Ally connected to power.
  • Save the original Windows recovery media or make sure you know how to create it.
  • Record the current BIOS and firmware versions and note any unusual settings.
  • Do not assume that a dual-boot configuration will remain intact after future OS updates.
  • Keep a Windows installer or ASUS recovery route available if you later need to restore the original setup.
  • Expect to troubleshoot hardware-specific issues yourself if Steam Support classifies the Ally as outside its official support scope.

SteamOS does not make the Ally’s original Windows software disappear from the universe, but a full installation can remove access to it until Windows is restored. Dual boot is possible in some configurations, but it adds partitioning and bootloader complexity and should not be treated as risk-free.

What SteamOS can improve on the Ally

SteamOS is Linux-based and designed around a controller-first gaming experience. Valve’s SteamOS overview describes a system optimized for gaming that still includes a desktop mode for other software.

On a compatible Ally, the main benefits can include:

  • a console-like boot and library interface;
  • faster access to Steam Input, performance controls and the gaming overlay;
  • a more integrated suspend-and-resume workflow;
  • less Windows desktop friction on a small screen;
  • Steam library integration without building a handheld launcher setup yourself; and
  • access to Windows games through Proton when the game and its supporting software are compatible.

Valve says Proton enables many Windows games to run on SteamOS and reported more than 18,000 checked titles on its SteamOS page at the time of that update. That is a dated Valve figure, not a permanent guarantee that every title will continue to work or that every game will provide a good handheld experience.

SteamOS may make the Ally feel more like a console, but it does not give the hardware Steam Deck controls. The Ally’s lack of trackpads can still matter in games designed around cursor movement, desktop interaction or mouse-like input.

What you give up compared with Windows

Windows remains the safer choice for users who want the broadest PC compatibility. Installing SteamOS can make Steam-focused gaming more cohesive, but it can also complicate or remove access to parts of the Windows ecosystem.

Category SteamOS Windows
Steam interface More tightly integrated and controller-focused. Usually requires more launcher and desktop setup.
Steam library Broad Proton coverage, but compatibility varies by game. Native Windows support is generally the baseline.
Xbox Game Pass Major limitation; it is not equivalent to the native Windows experience. Native PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store access.
Anti-cheat Depends on the game and provider’s Linux/Proton support. Generally broader compatibility.
ASUS utilities Some features may lack complete Linux equivalents. Full Windows vendor software is available.
Sleep and power controls Handheld-focused, but Ally-specific behavior can vary by release. Familiar but often less console-like.
Support path May involve Linux, Proton, GitHub or community troubleshooting. More conventional ASUS and Microsoft support routes.

Features such as RGB lighting, fingerprint-reader behavior, gyro controls, rear buttons, fan profiles, charging limits, docking, external displays and sleep behavior can vary by model and SteamOS release. A release note fixing one Ally-family device should not be read as a guarantee for every other revision.

Game compatibility is separate from hardware compatibility

A game can run on SteamOS while still offering a poor experience on a particular Ally. Hardware support answers questions such as whether the display, controls, audio and graphics work. Game compatibility adds another layer: Proton, launchers, DRM, codecs, anti-cheat, controller prompts and the game’s own settings all matter.

  • Play All Your Games – The ROG Ally supports all Windows-compatible games across platforms such as Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, GOG, and more.

  • Play the Way You Want – Embrace versatility with the ROG Ally. Game on-the-go with handheld mode, or share the fun with friends and family by hooking it up to your TV and connecting multiple controllers.
  • Incredible Power – Equipped with AMD’s Z1 APU with RDNA 3 graphics and 2.8 TFLOPs, the Ally makes playing any game on the palm of your hand possible.
  • Stunningly Beautiful Visuals – On the Ally, games are crisp and clear thanks to its 7” Full HD touchscreen display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium technology.

Valve’s Steamworks compatibility documentation describes testing criteria including controller support, text input, launchers and interface glyphs. A Steam Deck Verified label is useful evidence, but it does not guarantee identical behavior on every ROG Ally. The Ally may have a different display resolution, refresh rate, power limit, firmware, input layout or driver state.

Before moving a Steam-first library to SteamOS, check:

  • whether the game requires kernel-level or unsupported anti-cheat;
  • whether its launcher authenticates correctly under Proton;
  • whether cutscenes, voice chat and video codecs work;
  • whether mods and third-party middleware are compatible;
  • whether the game expects trackpads or a mouse-like control scheme; and
  • whether recent reports refer to the same Proton and SteamOS versions you intend to use.

Valve specifically notes that some anti-cheat providers and media codecs may be unsupported on SteamOS-compatible hardware. “Runs on SteamOS” is therefore not the same claim as “works exactly like it does on Windows.”

Common problems after installation

Potential failure modes include:

  • the system boots but some controls are missing;
  • TDP controls are absent or report unexpected values;
  • speakers or audio stop working after suspend;
  • SD cards behave unreliably;
  • Wi-Fi or Bluetooth needs a later update or workaround;
  • a recovery choice erases Windows or existing partitions;
  • dual-boot entries disappear after an update;
  • a game launches but fails on its launcher, cutscenes, audio or anti-cheat;
  • a dock or external display fails to negotiate correctly; or
  • a hardware fix exists in Beta/Preview but has not reached stable SteamOS.

When the device is outside Valve’s officially supported hardware category, Steam Support may have limited ability to resolve these issues. The practical support route can instead involve Valve’s SteamOS issue tracker, the relevant hardware community and the release notes for the exact device family.

SteamOS, Windows, Bazzite or a Steam Deck?

Choose SteamOS on the Ally if:

  • most of your games are on Steam;
  • you want a console-like interface and handheld-focused suspend/resume;
  • you do not depend on PC Game Pass or Microsoft Store games;
  • you accept occasional Proton and Linux troubleshooting; and
  • you are comfortable backing up data and restoring an operating system if necessary.

Stay with Windows if:

  • Game Pass is central to how you use the handheld;
  • you rely on several Windows-only launchers or applications;
  • you play competitive games whose anti-cheat may not support Linux;
  • you need ASUS’s complete software suite; or
  • you want the lowest-risk support and recovery path.

Consider Bazzite if:

Bazzite is a Fedora-based immutable Linux distribution with a Steam Deck-like handheld experience. It can appeal to users who want customization, community guides or an alternative to Valve’s image. It is not SteamOS, however, and it does not turn an Ally into a Valve-certified SteamOS device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider a Steam Deck if:

The Steam Deck remains the clearest choice for someone who wants the most tightly integrated Valve experience, established SteamOS hardware support and minimal installation work. The trade-offs are lower performance in some workloads and less native access to Windows software, Game Pass and certain anti-cheat games.

Consider a Legion Go S or another Powered by SteamOS device if:

A third-party device sold through Valve’s licensed SteamOS ecosystem may suit buyers who want non-Valve hardware without installing the operating system themselves. It will still have its own screen, controls, battery and ergonomics, so “Powered by SteamOS” does not mean it is identical to a Steam Deck or Ally.

The verdict

Valve’s 2024 promise was genuine, and it has developed into substantial SteamOS support for ROG Ally hardware by 2026. Valve now documents installation on the ROG Ally and Ally X, and its release notes show ongoing work on Ally-family controls, power management, audio, storage and stability.

But the careful conclusion is not that every ROG Ally is now a Steam Deck or an officially certified Powered by SteamOS product. Treat the Ally as a documented and increasingly supported installation target with ongoing third-party-device development. Install SteamOS if a Steam-first, console-like experience is worth giving up some Windows compatibility and accepting additional troubleshooting. Stay with Windows if Game Pass, anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer, ASUS utilities or broad application compatibility matter more.
