Valve announced its new Steam Machine on November 12, 2025, with a 2026 release window and no price. That price uncertainty is now resolved: Valve opened randomized reservations on June 22, 2026, listing the 512GB model at $1,049 in the United States. Valve’s “over 6x more powerful” comparison with Steam Deck describes hardware capability—not a guarantee of six times the frame rate in every game.
Update: Valve announced U.S. pricing and opened reservations on June 22, 2026. The original announcement did not include a price.
What Valve announced
Valve’s November 2025 hardware announcement introduced three products: the Steam Machine, a next-generation Steam Controller, and the Steam Frame VR headset. The Steam Machine is a compact PC designed for TV and living-room gaming, not a handheld or a Steam Deck successor. Valve initially said it was aiming to release the hardware in 2026, without giving an exact date or price. Valve’s announcement video and its Steamworks announcement describe the product and its intended role.
It runs SteamOS and is meant to bring Steam’s controller-friendly Game Mode to a TV or monitor. Like a PC, it also offers access to a desktop environment. That makes it closer to a small SteamOS gaming computer than a closed console, even though Valve is aiming for a simpler, console-like living-room experience.

What “over 6x more powerful” means
Valve describes the Steam Machine as approximately six times as powerful as Steam Deck. The company’s Steamworks material presents this as a hardware-performance comparison; a Valve hardware talk at GDC 2026 also labels the performance comparison “6x Steam Deck.” Neither establishes that every game will run at six times the frame rate.
Frame rates do not scale in a fixed ratio between two systems. A game may be limited by its graphics processor, CPU, engine, shader compilation, or an imposed frame-rate cap. Resolution and graphics settings matter too: comparing a demanding game at one resolution on Deck with a lower internal resolution and upscaling on Steam Machine would not be an apples-to-apples result. Valve’s multiplier is best read as a broad indication of the hardware gap, not a per-game benchmark.

- RYZEN 7 H 255 CPU - The Ryzen 7 H 255 is a chip from the Hawk Point family and is an upgraded version of the older Ryzen 7 8745H and has 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) that run at up to 4.9 GHz, together with the powerful Radeon 780M iGPU. Unlike Zen 3, Zen 4 offers AVX512 support along with other improvements such as larger caches/registers/buffers across the board.
- GAMING PC - The Radeon 780M (12 CUs / 768 shaders, up to 2,600 MHz) can drive multiple displays simultaneously with a resolution of up to 8K. Hardware encoding and hardware decoding of the most common video codecs (AV1, AVC, HEVC) is also no problem; playing the latest games on FSR settings without issues.
- WHY CHOOSE DDR5 5600MHz DUAL CHANNEL (2×16GB): With a 5600MHz clock—a 17% frequency uplift over 4800MHz—this kit delivers massive bandwidth gains that elevate real-world performance. Gamers enjoy higher minimum FPS and less stutter in open-world and sim titles for a smoother competitive experience. Video editors and 3D creators benefit from faster 4K/8K timeline scrubbing, quicker renders in DaVinci Resolve and Premiere, and swifter asset loading. For AI/LLM workloads, the superior throughput reduces I/O bottlenecks, cuts token generation latency, and accelerates model fine-tuning by keeping processing cores fed with data—so you wait less and create more.
- 32GB DDR5 RAM + 512GB SSD - The K12 mini computer is equipped with Dual 16GB (Total 32GB) SO-DIMM DDR5 5600MHz memory sticks. 512GB PCIE 4.0 SSD Drive with 3x M.2 2280 Expansion slots. Each slot capable of reading up to 8TB. (24TB MAX)
- QUAD SCREEN 4K DISPLAY SUPPORT - K12 Mini PC support 4-screen 4K/8K output via HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K@60Hz), and USB Type-C Transfer speed (supporting PD3.0/DP1.4/DATA). Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Specifications and performance targets
Announcement-era reporting describes a custom AMD-based system with a six-core, 12-thread Zen 4 CPU, 16GB of system memory, and 8GB of GDDR6 graphics memory. Reported connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The compact, cube-like enclosure measures approximately 152 × 162.4 × 156mm, according to Engadget’s specification summary; Windows Central’s announcement coverage reports the CPU and memory configuration. Valve’s custom hardware should not be treated as exactly equivalent to a conventional desktop graphics card with a similar-sounding specification: power limits, drivers, cooling, and software all affect performance.
Valve has described the system as capable of targeting 4K gaming at 60 frames per second in suitable titles, using AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and other reconstruction technologies, and has cited ray-tracing support. These are capabilities and targets, not a promise that demanding games will render natively at 4K and hold 60 fps. Upscaling renders a game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution output; a game may need that approach, reduced settings, or a lower frame-rate target to run well. The original announcement’s 4K target and caveats were also reported by Ars Technica.

Steam Machine Verified and game compatibility
Valve established a separate Steam Machine Verified label for games tested for their out-of-the-box experience on the hardware. The criteria cover default controller behavior, default graphics settings, performance without user configuration, readability and usability on a living-room display, and operation with SteamOS and Proton. The Steam Machine documentation explains the program.
- A Verified badge is not a promise of native 4K, maximum graphics settings, ray tracing, or a fixed frame rate.
- A game without the badge may still work; verification indicates Valve’s tested default experience, not the only playable configuration.
- SteamOS uses Proton to run many Windows games, but compatibility can still depend on anti-cheat systems, launchers, DRM, middleware, and other game-specific requirements.
Valve says games that already run well on Steam Deck should generally run well on Steam Machine, while titles held back by Deck’s CPU or GPU may benefit from the stronger hardware. That is not a guarantee that every Deck-compatible game will work flawlessly or that its behavior will be identical on the two devices.

Price and availability: from no price to $1,049
The original “no price yet” description applied to Valve’s November 12, 2025 announcement. Valve initially targeted 2026 and said pricing would be more in line with comparable PC hardware than with an aggressively subsidized console. Early-2026 reporting described uncertainty over timing and price amid changing component costs, particularly for memory and storage. Valve’s eventual U.S. prices, announced June 22, 2026, are:
| Configuration | U.S. price |
|---|---|
| 512GB Steam Machine | $1,049 |
| 512GB Steam Machine plus Steam Controller | $1,128 |
| 2TB Steam Machine | $1,349 |
| 2TB Steam Machine plus Steam Controller | $1,428 |
Valve announced randomized reservations rather than a conventional guaranteed retail purchase. The figures above are official U.S. prices; Valve’s Steam Hardware announcement is the primary source for pricing and reservation details. Prices and availability can differ by region and may change. The base configuration does not include the Steam Controller; the listed controller bundle costs $79 more than its matching machine-only configuration.

It may suit you if…
- You already have a substantial Steam library and want to play it from the couch.
- You want a compact system with a controller-first interface and are willing to pay for SteamOS and living-room convenience.
- You want PC-like flexibility, including desktop mode, without setting up a full-size gaming desktop.
Look elsewhere if…
- Your priority is the lowest cost per frame, or you already own a capable gaming PC.
- You need dependable support for every Windows game, launcher, anti-cheat system, or mod.
- You want portability: Steam Machine is a stationary living-room system, while Steam Deck is Valve’s handheld option.
- You expect demanding games to run at native 4K with high settings and a locked 60 fps, or you mainly want console exclusives.
A conventional gaming PC can offer broader Windows compatibility and upgrade choices, while a PlayStation or Xbox offers a more fixed console experience and its own exclusive games. Those are different trade-offs, rather than direct equivalents: the Steam Machine’s distinct appeal is combining a compact form factor, SteamOS, and access to a user’s existing Steam library.
