Valve’s rumored Steam console is no longer a rumor. The company officially announced the Steam Machine on November 12, 2025, and the new SteamOS gaming PC began launching in 2026. U.S. configurations start at $1,049 before adding a controller, while the most expensive listed bundle reaches $1,428.
It is a legitimate living-room alternative to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X: it is designed to sit under a TV, use a controller, resume games quickly, synchronize saves, and present a console-style Steam interface. But it is not a conventional subsidized console, and it is not the inexpensive PS5 or Xbox killer that early rumors implied.
The most accurate description is a premium, console-shaped gaming PC built by Valve. It brings an existing Steam library to the living room and preserves PC flexibility, but its high launch price, variable SteamOS compatibility, and performance compromises make it a specialized alternative rather than an obvious replacement for every PS5 or Xbox owner.

The original Steam Machines launched around 2015 and 2016 as a broad initiative involving multiple hardware manufacturers. Those systems had different specifications, prices, and levels of support. They were not one standardized Valve console.
A separate rumor in 2024 claimed that Valve was preparing a direct PlayStation and Xbox rival. That report was publicly described as debunked at the time, so it should not be used as evidence that the current product had already been confirmed. The background to that earlier rumor is documented by Insider Gaming.
The current product became official on November 12, 2025, when Valve announced the Steam Machine alongside the Steam Controller and Steam Frame. Unlike the first Steam Machine initiative, this is a single internally designed platform with Valve-controlled hardware and software targets. That unified approach also makes features such as the Steam Machine Verified program more meaningful than they could have been across a collection of unrelated partner PCs.

Valve itself has resisted calling the device a traditional console. Its stated position is that Steam Machine is an extension of PC gaming rather than a closed console platform. That distinction matters: Valve is selling a prebuilt PC-like product inside an open Steam ecosystem, not relying on the usual console model of subsidized hardware, exclusive software, and platform lock-in.
Price, configurations, and availability
These are the listed U.S. configurations:
| Configuration | U.S. price | Controller included? | Other details |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512GB Steam Machine | $1,049 | No | Base unit |
| 512GB Steam Machine plus Steam Controller | $1,128 | Yes | The controller is a bundle add-on |
| 2TB Steam Machine | $1,349 | No | Includes two additional faceplates |
| 2TB Steam Machine plus Steam Controller | $1,428 | Yes | Includes red fabric and solid walnut faceplates |
These are U.S. prices and should not be mixed with VAT-inclusive European pricing. The $1,049 headline figure also does not represent a complete couch-gaming setup if the buyer needs Valve’s new controller. For the most console-like comparison, the relevant starting point is therefore $1,128.
Valve said in February 2026 that memory and storage shortages forced it to revisit its earlier pricing and shipping expectations. That helps explain why pre-launch speculation about a much cheaper device did not survive into the retail announcement. The final price is not simply a premium for the Valve logo; it also reflects the cost of building a compact PC during a period of tight component supply.
The initial launch used reservations rather than ordinary open retail
Valve announced pricing and reservations on June 22, 2026. Reservation sign-ups closed on June 25, after which Valve randomized the reservation and waitlist order. The first purchase invitations began going out around June 29–30, with June 30 reported as the launch date.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction is important. A product can have a launch date while many interested buyers still cannot immediately purchase one. For the initial North American program, eligibility required a Steam account in good standing and a Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026. Sign-ups were limited to one per household, and customers receiving an invitation had 72 hours to complete the purchase. Valve said it expected to work through the reservation queue during the rest of 2026.
Valve later clarified that waitlisted customers would not leapfrog people who already held reservations. As of August 10, 2026, the Steam Machine is real and shipping, but availability remains dependent on reservation queues, production capacity, region, and the particular storage configuration. The official reservation terms are the right place to check eligibility and purchase-window details before assuming a unit is available.
What the Steam Machine actually is
The Steam Machine is a compact PC built around SteamOS 3, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. SteamOS is based on Arch Linux and includes KDE Plasma for desktop mode. In the living-room Game Mode interface, the experience is intended to feel closer to a console: connect the machine to a TV, pair a controller, select a game, and avoid the usual Windows desktop during normal play.
In Desktop Mode, however, it remains much more PC-like. Users can install applications, access files, configure software, and potentially install another operating system. That flexibility is one of the product’s biggest differences from a PS5 or Xbox, but it also means the Steam Machine cannot promise the same uniform experience across every game.

The specifications are summarized in Valve’s announcement and detailed in launch coverage from Tom’s Hardware and GamersNexus.
A small but important memory variation
Not every launch unit may have an identical memory layout. Depending on component supply, Valve’s machines can ship with either one 16GB DDR5 module or two 8GB modules. A single module operates in single-channel mode and can reduce CPU-side memory performance.
Valve has said its own gaming tests did not show a major difference, but this is still a meaningful hardware variation to disclose. It is another reason not to treat every review benchmark or every retail unit as perfectly interchangeable.

Valve says the Steam Machine has more than six times the horsepower of Steam Deck and is designed for 4K gaming at 60 frames per second with FSR upscaling. That claim describes Valve’s comparison with its handheld, not a direct benchmark against the PS5 or Xbox Series X. It should not be converted into a claim that the Steam Machine is six times as powerful as either console.
The hardware is substantially more capable than Steam Deck’s low-power integrated design, but the useful question is how it performs in actual games. Independent testing points to a more nuanced answer:
- 1080p is the safest general target. Many games can reach 60 frames per second at that resolution with sensible settings.
- 1440p is viable in some games. The result depends on the title, graphics preset, upscaling mode, and frame-rate target.
- 4K output is possible, but not universal native 4K. Demanding games may render internally below 4K and use FSR, dynamic resolution, reduced settings, or a combination of those techniques.
- Native 4K at high settings and a stable high frame rate is not a realistic expectation for every modern PC game.
- CPU-heavy games can expose the six-core processor and its power limit. Busy scenes, simulation-heavy titles, and high frame-rate targets can be more demanding than a simple resolution comparison suggests.
- The 8GB VRAM pool is a significant constraint. Texture quality, ray tracing, and future demanding games may require compromises, particularly at higher resolutions.
Reviews from WIRED, Tom’s Hardware, and GamersNexus broadly support that positioning. The Steam Machine can produce a 4K signal, but output resolution is not the same as internal render resolution. Buyers should distinguish native rendering, upscaling, dynamic resolution, frame generation, and the actual frame rate delivered by a specific game.
There is also an interface limitation worth noting. HDMI output is handled through HDMI 2.0, even though the advertised capability reaches up to 4K/120Hz. DisplayPort supports higher stated output modes, but HDMI is generally the easier connection for a TV. A 4K/120Hz television setup may therefore depend on the television’s ports, the chosen connection, display settings, and the game itself.
Steam library access is the main reason to buy one
The Steam Machine’s strongest advantage is continuity. A user signs into the same Steam account used on a desktop PC or Steam Deck and can access eligible purchases without buying those games again simply because they are being played on a different Steam device.
Supported games can synchronize saves through Steam Cloud. Steam Input provides extensive controller remapping, while the living-room interface is built around a controller-first experience. Valve also positions the Steam Machine as a possible host for streaming games to a Steam Deck, Steam Frame, or Steam Link client.
That does not mean every game in a Steam account behaves like a console game. Steam is a PC platform, and SteamOS depends heavily on Linux support and Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games.
What can go wrong with a Steam game?
Potential problem areas include:
- Multiplayer games whose anti-cheat systems do not support Linux or Proton.
- Windows-only launchers, middleware, or intrusive DRM.
- Broken video codecs, launchers, controller handling, or graphics features.
- Games that boot but perform poorly or require manual graphics changes.
- Mods and third-party utilities designed only for Windows.
- Games that require kernel-level drivers or specialized peripherals without Linux support.
- Missing features, unusual graphical bugs, or incompatibilities introduced by a game update.
Valve is expanding its compatibility labeling with Steam Machine Verified. The badge should be treated as a useful screening tool, not an absolute guarantee of identical performance. An officially unsupported game may still launch, while a game marked playable may need settings changes. WIRED encountered that kind of behavior in testing, which is why recent community reports and game-specific testing remain valuable alongside the badge.
Before buying, check the game’s Steam Machine Verified status, search recent community reports, identify whether it uses anti-cheat or a separate launcher, and confirm that local multiplayer accessories work. If one or two specific games matter most, those games should determine the purchase decision rather than the size of the overall Steam library.

Steam Machine versus PS5 and Xbox Series X
The comparison is valid at the level of use case. All three products compete for the same TV, sofa, controller, gaming time, and household budget. The Steam Machine offers a game-focused interface, suspend and resume, cloud saves, and a living-room setup that resembles a console.
The comparison becomes misleading when it treats them as identical platforms. The Steam Machine has no Valve-exclusive game catalog, no disc drive, no universal compatibility guarantee, and no closed storefront designed around platform lock-in. It can run desktop applications and another operating system. Its performance is affected by PC settings, Proton, drivers, upscaling, and individual game optimization.

Sony’s current U.S. pricing comes from the PlayStation Blog. Microsoft’s official Series X page and recent August 2026 reporting do not show the same figure, so the Xbox price should be checked directly before publication or purchase. Xbox’s official page also documents support for thousands of games across four Xbox generations and Smart Delivery for supported titles.

At Sony’s April 2026 U.S. recommended prices, the $1,049 Steam Machine is about $399 more than the standard PS5 and about $449 more than the PS5 Digital Edition. It is also $149 more than the $899.99 PS5 Pro before adding a controller. Even using the reported $799.99 Xbox Series X price, the base Steam Machine remains more expensive.
That does not automatically make the Steam Machine bad value. Its price includes a full PC platform, access to a buyer’s existing Steam library, Desktop Mode, broad input support, expandable storage, and the option to install another operating system. But it does make the device difficult to sell as a mass-market console replacement. A PS5 or Xbox buyer is paying less for a more closed, more predictable experience; a Steam Machine buyer is paying more for flexibility and library continuity.
The 512GB model has a storage problem
The base model’s 512GB SSD is a poor match for users who plan to keep a large modern PC library installed. The operating system, shader caches, updates, and other system data reduce the amount of space available for games, while individual PC releases can consume a substantial portion of the drive.
The 2TB model is the convenience option, not a faster-performance option: both configurations use the same CPU and GPU. Buyers who are comfortable managing storage can instead use the high-speed microSD slot or replace the internal SSD. The 2TB model’s extra faceplates are a cosmetic bonus, not a performance upgrade.
SteamOS makes the Steam Machine simpler—but not entirely console-like
Game Mode, controller pairing, Steam Cloud, Steam Input, and suspend/resume give the Steam Machine a polished living-room workflow. That is the part of the product most likely to appeal to console players who do not want to sit at a desk.
Still, the underlying operating system retains PC behavior. Troubleshooting can involve changing Proton versions, selecting different FSR modes, lowering texture quality because of the 8GB VRAM limit, disabling ray tracing, adjusting resolution or frame-rate targets, installing a launcher through Desktop Mode, or leaving a beta SteamOS channel for the stable release.
Valve’s SteamOS 3.8 series also broadens the DIY alternative. Valve’s hardware FAQ says users who do not obtain a Steam Machine can build or repurpose a living-room PC and install SteamOS. At that stage, AMD GPUs were supported, with broader hardware support planned. Valve released SteamOS 3.8.10 as a stable update on June 17, 2026, followed by later 3.8.x updates including 3.8.16 in July. Because SteamOS changes frequently, readers should consult the current SteamOS release notes before choosing hardware for a DIY installation.

Build a small Windows gaming PC
A small-form-factor Windows PC can offer broader launcher, anti-cheat, and Game Pass compatibility, easier NVIDIA support, more component choices, and potentially better performance per dollar. It can also be upgraded more flexibly.
The trade-off is setup. Buyers must choose and assemble—or pay someone to assemble—components such as the CPU, GPU, memory, storage, case, cooling, power supply, and operating system. A Windows PC also brings desktop clutter, updates, and more launcher friction to the TV. Small cases can make parts expensive or difficult to source.
Use an existing gaming PC with Steam Link
Steam Link and Remote Play can provide a TV interface without purchasing another gaming computer. The host PC can remain upgradeable, and the living-room device only needs to receive the stream.

This approach depends on network quality. Compression, latency, wireless interference, and the need to keep the host PC powered on can make it less consistent than local rendering on a Steam Machine or console.
Buy a PS5 or Xbox
A PS5 or Xbox remains the safer choice for buyers who want a lower hardware cost, predictable game compatibility, mainstream local multiplayer, disc support where available, and platform-specific services or software. The downside is a closed ecosystem: Steam purchases do not transfer to PlayStation or Xbox, and the buyer gives up much of the desktop flexibility offered by a PC-based device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Who should buy the Steam Machine?
Buy it when most of these statements describe you:
- You already own a substantial Steam library.
- You want that library on a television without building and configuring a PC yourself.
- You value Steam sales, mods, Desktop Mode, and open software more than console exclusives.
- You mainly play controller-friendly single-player games, indie games, strategy titles, or older releases.
- You are comfortable adjusting graphics settings when a game needs it.
- You want the Steam Machine to host streaming to a Steam Deck, Steam Frame, or Steam Link client.
- You do not need physical discs, PlayStation exclusives, Nintendo games, or guaranteed access to Xbox Game Pass.
- You accept paying a premium for Valve’s integrated hardware and software experience.
Choose a PS5 instead when you want the simplest plug-and-play experience, PlayStation software, a conventional console performance target, a disc-drive option, or a system for local multiplayer without PC-style compatibility research.
Choose Xbox instead when you want Xbox first-party software, Game Pass, backward compatibility, Smart Delivery, or continuity with an existing Xbox library and accessory collection.
Choose a DIY PC instead when you want maximum performance per dollar, Windows compatibility, broad launcher and anti-cheat support, or a system designed for future CPU and GPU upgrades. The DIY route is better for technically confident buyers than for someone who simply wants a no-maintenance console.
A practical buying checklist
- Check the live price and stock for your region. U.S. launch pricing and reservation rules do not automatically apply to Europe, Japan, or other markets.
- Budget for a controller. The $1,049 base Steam Machine does not include the new Steam Controller; the listed 512GB bundle costs $1,128.
- Decide whether 512GB is enough. If you want a large installed library and do not want to manage microSD cards or replace the SSD, the 2TB version is the easier choice.
- Check your most important games individually. Look for Steam Machine Verified status, recent community reports, anti-cheat requirements, launchers, and peripheral support.
- Set realistic display expectations. Treat 1080p as the dependable target, 1440p as game-dependent, and 4K as an output mode that may use FSR or dynamic resolution.
- Confirm your TV connection. HDMI 2.0 can output up to 4K/120Hz under the advertised conditions, but HDMI 2.1-style assumptions should not be made.
- Consider Windows before buying. If a particular game, launcher, anti-cheat system, or subscription service is essential, a Windows PC may be the less frustrating option.
- Compare the complete setup, not just the box. Include the controller, extra storage, display requirements, subscriptions, and the cost of replacing games you already own on another platform.
Verdict: a real living-room PC, not a cheap console replacement
Valve has accomplished the important part of the original rumor: it has built and launched a real Steam gaming device for the television. The Steam Machine gives PC players a more polished console-style interface, lets existing Steam purchases follow them to the living room, and keeps the flexibility of a PC underneath SteamOS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBut the product’s launch price and performance profile change the conclusion. At $1,049 without a controller, it costs substantially more than a PS5 and more than an Xbox Series X even using the recently reported higher Xbox price. Its reliable performance target is closer to 1080p or 1440p than universal native 4K, and its Steam library advantage is tempered by Proton, anti-cheat, launcher, DRM, and game-specific compatibility issues.
So yes, Steam Machine competes with PS5 and Xbox for the living-room gaming audience. It does not compete with them as an identical closed-console platform. It is best understood as a premium Valve-made gaming PC for Steam users who value convenience and openness enough to pay for both.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Steam Machine play every game in my Steam library?
No. Steam Machine gives you access to your Steam account and library, but individual games can still fail or require adjustments because of Proton, anti-cheat, Windows-only launchers, DRM, mods, peripherals, or poor optimization. Check the Steam Machine Verified label and recent community reports for important games.
Does the $1,049 Steam Machine include a controller?
No. The 512GB base unit is listed without the new Steam Controller. The 512GB Steam Machine plus controller bundle costs $1,128 in the United States.
Recommended Free Tools
Can the Steam Machine really run games at 4K and 60 frames per second?
It can output a 4K signal and use FSR upscaling, but that does not mean every game renders natively at 4K/60. Independent testing found 1080p to be the safer general target, with 1440p and 4K depending heavily on the game, settings, upscaling, and frame-rate target.
Is the Steam Machine more powerful than a PS5 or Xbox Series X?
The available information does not support a simple universal winner. Valve’s claim that it has more than six times Steam Deck’s horsepower is not a direct PS5 or Xbox benchmark. The Steam Machine is a separate PC platform with different power limits, settings, drivers, and compatibility behavior, so game-by-game comparisons are more meaningful than marketing multipliers.
Should I buy the Steam Machine instead of a PS5 or Xbox?
Buy it if you already own many Steam games and want a compact TV PC with Desktop Mode, mods, flexible inputs, and SteamOS. Choose PS5 or Xbox if you prioritize lower hardware cost, predictable compatibility, physical media, platform exclusives, or services such as Game Pass.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Valve’s Steam Machine is real and has launched, but it is not a conventional PS5 or Xbox replacement. It is a premium, console-shaped SteamOS PC whose best audience is an existing Steam user who wants PC gaming on a TV and accepts higher cost and more variable compatibility.
