Local or online co-op: which should you use?
| Feature | Local co-op | Online co-op |
|---|---|---|
| Players | Up to four | Up to four |
| How players connect | Play together locally on one device; players share the local play experience. | Each player uses their own device and copy of the game; players can roam independently. |
| Setup | Start a co-op run and connect an input device for each player. | Choose Online, then host a room and share its code or join a friend’s room. Xbox players can also use platform invites. |
| Platforms stated by poncle | Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, Android and iOS. | PC and supported consoles; mobile is not supported for online play according to poncle’s current FAQ. |
| Cross-play | Not specified in the Local Co-Op FAQ. | Supported within some ecosystems: Xbox Series X|S with PC using Microsoft Store/Game Pass, and PS4 with PS5. Cross-play between different ecosystems, such as Xbox and PlayStation or consoles and Steam, is not supported. |
| DLC | A player who owns DLC can play it in local co-op. | DLC is not required to join online co-op, but every player needs the relevant DLC to access its content together. |
Platform support and cross-play can change. Check poncle’s Online FAQ for the current online platform list and pairings, and its Local Co-Op FAQ for local platform support. The FAQ does not specify local cross-play behavior.
How to start local co-op
- Connect an input device for every player before starting the run. Poncle’s PC guidance requires one controller or other input device per player. The Steam listing also identifies controller support.
- On Android or iOS, connect Bluetooth controllers for additional players and use landscape orientation.
- Choose co-op before the run begins. You can switch between single-player and co-op before each run without starting a new save.
- Select characters and begin the run. Duplicate copies of the same character cannot be selected in one run.
Local co-op is available on the formats poncle lists as Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, Android and iOS. Check that each controller is compatible with the device you are using.
How to start an online game
- From the main menu, select Online.
- Choose whether to host or join a game. If you host, the game gives you a room code to share with friends; if joining, use the host’s code.
- On Xbox, you can also invite friends through the platform’s invite system. Other listed platforms use room codes.
- Start the run once your group has joined. Each player needs their own device and copy of Vampire Survivors.
Online co-op is designed for inviting people you know; there is no random matchmaking. Players do not need to stay together on one shared screen, and the session cannot include a mix of online and local co-op.

Cross-play, subscriptions and DLC
Cross-play is limited to listed ecosystems
Poncle’s Online FAQ lists Xbox Series X|S cross-play with PC players using Microsoft Store/Game Pass, and PS4 cross-play with PS5. It says cross-play is not available between different ecosystems, citing Xbox-to-PlayStation and consoles-to-Steam as examples. These details are version-sensitive; confirm the current FAQ before organizing a session across platforms.
Online play and platform subscriptions
Poncle says online play is free on its side. Console players may still need the standard online subscription required by their platform, so check the relevant platform’s current rules.

DLC access depends on ownership
You can enter online co-op without DLC. To play a particular DLC’s content together, every player needs to own that pack. For local co-op, poncle says a player who owns the DLC can play it in co-op.
What changes during a co-op run?
Local co-op
- The Friendship Amulet can give every player a level-up, assigning it to a random weapon—or a passive item if that player’s weapons are maxed.
- A downed player can revive after a countdown in a coffin, though enemies can interfere.
- Players have fewer weapon slots per player in co-op. Poncle says it adjusted local co-op balance to keep runs challenging.
- Unlocks earned in local co-op carry over to the single-player save.
Online co-op
- Each player brings characters and unlocks from their own save. The host’s save determines the stages and items available to the session.
- Pickups, gold and achievements are collected as a group. At the end, each player chooses whether to save progress to their own file.
- Enemies do not scale by player count, according to poncle.
- If the host disconnects, the session ends. If a client disconnects, that player’s weapons are redistributed and the run continues; the disconnected player cannot rejoin until after the run.
Can you play local co-op remotely?
Poncle does not officially support playing its local co-op mode online. On PC, it points to Steam Remote Play Together as an unofficial workaround. This streams a local co-op session rather than using the game’s native Online mode, and poncle notes that third-party remote-play issues are outside its control. Since the game also has native online co-op, use Remote Play Together only if you specifically want to run the local mode remotely.
