Choose Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines if you want an exploratory action RPG with combat, vampire disciplines, character builds, side quests and Los Angeles spaces you can revisit. Choose Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong if you want a newer, investigation-first narrative RPG in which three playable vampires navigate dialogue, social manipulation and consequential decisions.
Neither game is simply a newer version of the other. Bloodlines prioritizes systemic role-playing and freedom to approach problems through a build. Swansong prioritizes authored characters, detective work and branching outcomes. The better starting point depends on whether you want to play a flexible vampire in a city or follow several defined protagonists through a tightly directed crisis.

Bloodlines and Swansong at a glance
| Question | Bloodlines | Swansong |
|---|---|---|
| Original release | 2004 | 2022 |
| Developer | Troika Games | Big Bad Wolf |
| Primary setting | Modern-day Los Angeles | Boston and its Camarilla society |
| Core format | Action RPG with exploration and combat | Narrative RPG focused on investigation and social encounters |
| Playable structure | One player character shaped by clan and discipline choices | Three main playable vampires with distinct perspectives |
| World structure | Areas can be revisited; optional quests sit beside the main story | Directed scenarios whose decisions determine later consequences |
| Best for | Build experimentation, side content and active combat | Dialogue, detective work and consequence-driven storytelling |
This contrast matters more than release date. Bloodlines is older, but its design gives you more control over how your character handles encounters. Swansong is newer, yet its freedom is concentrated in interpretation, evidence gathering and social decisions rather than in roaming a large, reusable map.
What kind of RPG is Bloodlines?
A systems-led action RPG
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is Troika Games’ 2004 role-playing game set in modern-day Los Angeles. Its campaign combines a main story with optional side quests, revisitable areas and vampire clan and discipline systems. Those systems make the character you build a practical tool for solving problems, not just a set of dialogue labels.
#1 Best Overall
Combat is a central part of the experience. You make decisions about how your vampire is developed, then use that build while moving through hostile encounters and story situations. A player who enjoys choosing abilities, testing what a character can do and seeing a build open or close approaches will find the game’s appeal in that feedback loop.
Exploration and optional content
The Los Angeles structure supports detours. You can leave the immediate objective, investigate another lead or return to an area for a side quest. That arrangement makes the campaign feel like a city-based journey rather than a sequence of isolated missions. Optional content is not merely a checklist: it gives your build more situations in which to matter and lets you spend time with the setting outside the critical path.
Revisitable spaces also change how you plan. You do not have to treat every location as a one-time scene. If a new ability, quest development or piece of information changes your priorities, the game’s structure allows you to go back and act on it. That flexibility is a major reason to choose Bloodlines when “freedom” means movement, experimentation and the ability to pursue your own order of activities.

Bloodlines gives you the classic PC RPG sensation of making a character and inhabiting that character across a connected campaign. Clan and discipline choices establish the broad identity of the vampire, while your decisions in play determine how you use that identity. The result is a role-playing experience built around agency: the game presents a problem, and your character’s capabilities influence the available response.
That design is also why the game can feel less approachable than a modern, highly directed narrative title. You are asked to understand the relationship between your choices, your abilities and the situations in front of you. Players who want the game to explain a single ideal route may find the open-ended structure demanding; players who enjoy discovering their own route usually regard that demand as the point.
What kind of RPG is Swansong?
An investigation-first narrative RPG
Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is Big Bad Wolf’s 2022 narrative RPG. Its story follows three playable vampires and the fate of the Boston Camarilla. The official Steam description emphasizes that every choice can determine what happens to the characters and the wider vampire society, with consequences arising in both investigation and social interactions.
In practical terms, you spend more of your time examining situations, interpreting information and deciding what to say or do in encounters with other characters. The central question is not simply whether your build can win a fight. It is whether you have understood the scene well enough to make a decision whose effects may become clear later.

Switching among three main vampires gives Swansong a different kind of role-playing perspective from Bloodlines. You are not shaping one avatar across every situation. Instead, the game uses several protagonists to present different positions within the same larger crisis. Their viewpoints let the narrative examine events from more than one angle while making each decision part of a broader chain of consequences.

- Living world reacts to your character by clan, gender, allegiance and other choices
- Team-based online gaming -- choose to be a vampire or a vampire hunter
This structure suits players who like authored character arcs and want a story to test their judgment. It is less suited to someone whose main pleasure comes from inventing a personal build and using it to roam freely. The game’s identity comes from how the protagonists read evidence, negotiate with people and respond to pressure.
How consequence-driven play works
Choices in Swansong are consequential in two connected arenas. During investigations, the way you interpret information can affect what you learn or what you miss. During social interactions, dialogue and manipulation can change relationships and outcomes. The emphasis is therefore on attention and decision-making rather than on constant action.
That does not make the game passive. Investigation asks you to decide which details matter, while social scenes ask you to commit to a position without knowing every result in advance. If you enjoy narrative games in which a conversation can be as important as a battle, Swansong is designed around that priority.

Player agency
Bloodlines offers systemic agency. Clan, discipline and character-development choices affect how you approach the game’s problems, and optional quests give you room to set your own priorities. Agency is expressed through the combination of build, exploration and action.
Swansong offers narrative agency. You control how the three protagonists investigate, converse and respond to dilemmas, but the campaign is arranged around authored scenarios. Agency is expressed through interpretation and consequences rather than through free movement and combat approaches.
| If you want agency to mean… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing abilities and testing different approaches | Bloodlines | Clan and discipline systems support build-based problem solving. |
| Deciding what evidence to trust | Swansong | Investigations and social encounters turn judgment into the main mechanic. |
| Setting your own route through a campaign | Bloodlines | Revisitable areas and optional quests allow detours. |
| Shaping the result of a directed story | Swansong | Choices affect the protagonists and the Boston Camarilla. |
Action versus investigation
Bloodlines is the clear choice if combat is a requirement. Its action-RPG identity puts vampire abilities and active encounters alongside exploration and quests. You spend time doing things in the world, not only deciding what those things mean.
Swansong is mostly about investigation, dialogue and social interaction. Its official description specifically presents consequences in those areas. It is not designed as a combat-led alternative to Bloodlines; choose it when reading a situation and managing a conversation sounds more appealing than fighting through it.

Pacing and campaign structure
Bloodlines has the rhythm of a city campaign. A main objective can coexist with side quests, and revisiting locations lets the player pause, explore or return to unfinished business. The pace is consequently more self-directed.

Swansong is more directed. Its scenarios focus your attention on a particular investigation or social problem, and the consequences of your decisions give the campaign forward momentum. That makes it easier to follow a narrative arc, but it provides less of the “where should I go next?” freedom that defines Bloodlines.
Build depth and role-playing identity
If your definition of an RPG begins with character construction, Bloodlines is the stronger match. Clan and discipline systems let you think about what kind of vampire you are building and how that identity will function in play. The game’s side content and combat give those decisions repeated opportunities to matter.
Swansong is still an RPG, but its role-playing is centered on inhabiting three established protagonists and making consequential choices through them. The emphasis is on perspective, investigation and social conduct rather than on freely designing one character from the ground up. Calling it less of a role-playing game would be inaccurate; it is a different expression of the genre.
Freedom and replay value
Bloodlines has the broader form of freedom. You can revisit areas, pursue optional quests and see how a different build changes your solutions. A second playthrough can therefore feel different because you are not only making different story decisions; you may also be playing a differently capable vampire.
Swansong has replay value through outcomes and perspectives. Replaying can reveal how another decision changes an investigation, a social encounter or the fate of the wider Camarilla. Its value comes from comparing consequences in a directed narrative, not from turning the same city into a new sandbox.
| Replay question | More likely answer |
|---|---|
| Can I try a different character build? | Bloodlines |
| Can I pursue optional activities in another order? | Bloodlines |
| Can I see different consequences from key decisions? | Swansong |
| Can I experience the same crisis from multiple protagonists? | Swansong |
Which game is better for beginners?
Choose Bloodlines first if you are new to Vampire: The Masquerade but enjoy classic RPGs
Start with Bloodlines if you want your first exposure to the setting to come through exploration, combat and a character you shape yourself. It introduces the fiction through a traditional PC RPG framework: you have a city to move through, abilities to develop and optional work to discover. This is a good entry point for someone comfortable learning systems by playing.
Expect an older design philosophy. The game dates from 2004, so its appeal is tied to its cult-classic PC RPG identity and its willingness to let systems and side content carry the experience. If you prefer to experiment rather than follow a tightly signposted route, that age is less of a barrier.

This is the more approachable format for players who do not want to manage a combat-oriented build. You still need to pay attention and accept uncertainty, because the game’s consequences depend on what you discover and how you handle people, but the core task is easier to describe: investigate, converse and live with the result.
Should you play Bloodlines or Swansong first?
Play Bloodlines first when your priority is understanding the series through player freedom. It gives you the strongest sense of creating a vampire identity, exploring a city and deciding which problems deserve your attention. Choose this order if you want to compare Swansong later as a more focused narrative interpretation of the same broader setting.
Play Swansong first when your priority is a modern, investigation-led introduction. It lets you begin with three defined characters and a consequence-driven crisis, then move to Bloodlines if you want a more open campaign with combat and build experimentation.
There is no required story order established by the comparison itself. The games share the Vampire: The Masquerade universe, but their structures and casts are different enough that your preferred style is the sensible deciding factor.
Does Swansong have combat?
Swansong should be approached as mostly dialogue, investigation and social interaction rather than as an action game. The official product description puts the emphasis on consequences in investigations and conversations. If you are specifically looking for frequent combat and the satisfaction of developing a combat-capable build, Bloodlines is the safer choice.
That distinction does not mean Swansong lacks tension. Its pressure comes from incomplete information, social risk and the possibility that a decision will affect later events. The game asks you to manage what you know and how you present yourself, not to replace every investigation with a fight.
Availability and what to check before buying
Bloodlines has a cited listing on GOG, where it is included in the GOG Preservation Program. Swansong has cited listings on Steam and GOG, and release information reports broader console availability. Storefront catalogs, prices and regional editions can change, so confirm the current page for your country and platform before purchasing.
| Game | Cited digital availability | What is not fixed by the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Bloodlines | GOG listing; included in the GOG Preservation Program | Current price and regional availability |
| Swansong | Steam and GOG listings; broader console availability reported in release information | Current price, platform edition and regional availability |
Neither game has a defensible physical-product recommendation established here. If you want a boxed copy, verify the seller, edition and platform separately rather than assuming a marketplace listing represents a current or supported release.
A decision checklist
Use the following checklist if both descriptions sound appealing:
- Pick Bloodlines if you want combat to be a regular part of play.
- Pick Bloodlines if you want to build one vampire around clan and discipline choices.
- Pick Bloodlines if optional quests and revisitable Los Angeles locations matter more than a tightly directed campaign.
- Pick Swansong if detective work and reading situations are your preferred activities.
- Pick Swansong if you want three playable vampire perspectives instead of one customizable protagonist.
- Pick Swansong if you want dialogue and social manipulation to carry as much weight as exploration.
- Choose based on availability only after checking the current regional Steam, GOG or console storefront page, since prices and listings are not permanent.
The bottom line
Bloodlines is better for players who define an RPG by freedom, builds, combat, side quests and exploratory world design. Swansong is better for players who define an RPG by inhabiting characters, investigating uncertain situations and making choices with visible or delayed consequences. For a combat-and-exploration playthrough, start with Bloodlines; for a dialogue-and-detective playthrough, start with Swansong.
