Neither vapor chambers nor heat pipes are automatically better for console cooling. A vapor chamber spreads heat across a flat area; a heat pipe carries heat along a tube that can be routed to a heatsink. The better choice depends on the chip’s shape and position, available space, contact with the heatsink, fins, fan, and airflow. Microsoft’s Xbox One X used a vapor-chamber heatsink, while Sony’s PS5 Pro uses copper heat pipes—but those different consoles are design examples, not a controlled comparison showing one method wins.
How vapor chambers and heat pipes move heat
Both are sealed, two-phase heat-transfer devices. A working fluid evaporates near a hot component, carrying heat as vapor toward a cooler region. There it condenses and releases heat. The liquid then returns toward the hot area through gravity or capillary action. This cycle moves heat from the source to a place where a heatsink and airflow can disperse it.

The main difference is shape. AMD describes a heat pipe as an enclosed pipe and a vapor chamber as an enclosed plane. Because of its broad, flat geometry, a vapor chamber can generally spread heat over a larger area. That does not mean it always removes more heat from a console: the result also depends on how well the device contacts the chip and connects to the fins that reject heat.

In practical terms, the two devices solve related but not identical geometry problems. A concentrated hot region can be spread laterally across a chamber’s broad face. A heat pipe instead carries heat along a path designed by the console’s engineers, such as from a chip toward a fin stack. In either design, the component transports heat; it does not make the heat disappear. The heatsink, fan, ducts, and air moving through the chassis still need to reject that heat.

Advanced Thermal Solutions describes the operating cycle in more detail: heat vaporizes the working fluid near the source, vapor moves through the device and condenses at a cooler region, releasing latent heat, and liquid returns through gravity or capillary action. This phase-change process can spread heat with a small temperature gradient, but that general technical description is not a console-specific temperature measurement or guarantee of performance in a particular design.
Vapor chamber: spread heat over a broad surface
A chamber is useful when designers need to distribute heat laterally from a concentrated source across a wider plate. That can help feed heat into a larger fin area or accommodate a compact arrangement in which a conventional heatsink layout would be too tall. AMD notes that vapor chambers generally spread heat better, but are more expensive and harder to control for coplanarity—the flatness and alignment needed for reliable contact with adjoining parts.
That flatness issue is a manufacturing and assembly consideration, not merely a theoretical disadvantage. The chamber has to make appropriate contact with the heat source and connect effectively to the surfaces that reject heat. If the parts do not align as intended, the geometry alone cannot promise good heat transfer. AMD’s guidance therefore points to a trade-off: broad spreading can be valuable, while the chamber’s cost and coplanarity-control demands also matter to the design.
A vapor chamber may be attractive when one broad plate can help distribute heat across the intended fin area or fit within a low-profile arrangement. But whether it is the right answer depends on the whole layout. The source location, contact surface, available space, and path from the chamber into the fins all affect how useful that broad plane is.
Heat pipe: route heat along a designed path
A pipe moves heat along its length, so designers can route it from a chip to fins or another heat-rejection area. Multiple pipes can be arranged around neighboring components. Their geometry can be advantageous when the source and fin locations are separated or the layout favors tubes. AMD characterizes embedded heat pipes as a cost, weight, and performance compromise; that is general engineering guidance, not a claim that pipes outperform chambers in every console.
Routing is the central design flexibility. A pipe can be laid out to connect the heat source with a chosen fin region, while several pipes can be arranged around the parts and spaces in a particular assembly. ASUS describes customizing heat-pipe layouts for component placement and using vapor chambers when broad, even heat spreading is needed. This manufacturer guidance illustrates how geometry can influence the choice, but it does not supply a universal console rule or a direct performance ranking.

In a console, a pipe’s usefulness still depends on whether it can be positioned to make good contact at the source and deliver heat to the intended fins. The shape of the route, the position of nearby parts, and the space allowed by the chassis all constrain the design. A pipe is not automatically the better option just because it can be routed, just as a chamber is not automatically better just because it spreads heat across a plane.
Which method works better in a console?
Choose by the job the cooling assembly has to do, not by the component name. A broad heat source or need to spread heat across a plate may favor a vapor chamber. A layout that needs heat routed from the chip to a particular fin stack may favor heat pipes. The chassis can constrain either choice: a flat chamber may fit a low-profile design, while pipes may be shaped around surrounding parts.
That is the practical answer to “Which cooling method works better in consoles?”: neither method wins in every design. A chamber’s broad plane generally lends itself to lateral spreading. A pipe’s tube shape lends itself to routing heat along a planned path. The design that makes better use of those strengths depends on the size and location of the heat source, where the fins can go, how the cooling assembly fits around other components, and how effectively the complete system moves heat into and out of the console.
It is also important to separate heat transport from heat rejection. A chamber or pipe can move heat inside the assembly, but the fins must receive that heat and the airflow must carry it away. A design with an appealing transport component is not necessarily a better overall cooler if the contact, fin arrangement, fan, ducts, or air path are not effective. The chamber or pipe is one link in a system, not a standalone measure of cooling performance.
| Design factor | Vapor chamber | Heat pipe | Why it matters in a console |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat distribution | Spreads heat across a plane | Transfers heat along a tube | The source size and location, and the area available for fins, affect which geometry suits the design. |
| Packaging | Flat plate geometry | Tube geometry can be routed | The chassis height and component layout may favor one form. |
| Cost and manufacturing | AMD says it is generally more expensive and harder to control for coplanarity | AMD describes embedded pipes as a cost, weight, and performance compromise | Thermal performance is one part of an integrated design decision. |
| Airflow and heat rejection | Requires effective contact, fins, fan, and airflow | Requires effective contact, fins, fan, and airflow | Transporting heat inside the assembly is not the same as carrying it out of the console. |
The table describes tendencies and trade-offs, not a scorecard with a single winner. The evidence supports saying that vapor chambers generally spread heat across a larger area and that pipes route heat along a tube. It does not support saying that every chamber cools better, or that every pipe-based assembly is cheaper or more effective in a finished console. AMD’s descriptions are engineering guidance about design considerations; they are not measurements from a matched console test.

Neither device works in isolation. The heat must pass from the chip into the transport component, reach fins or another heat-rejection surface, and then leave the console through airflow. Contact quality, manufacturing tolerances, fan design, ducts, and air paths all shape the final result. Sony’s PS5 design discussion emphasizes the fan and optimized airflow channels, while ASUS describes heat pipes and chambers as parts of a larger cooling system.

This is why a fair comparison would consider more than a teardown image or the name of a cooling part. It would compare complete systems under comparable workloads and conditions, including temperatures under load, fan noise, and sustained performance. Chassis dimensions and component placement matter too, because the cooling assembly must fit and function in the product that was actually built.
What Xbox One X and PS5 Pro show—and what they do not
Xbox One X: a chamber in a compact cooling design
Microsoft’s October 5, 2017 account of Xbox One X development says the console was designed to deliver True 4K gaming without exceeding the footprint of Xbox One S. An initial approach using a heatsink base, radiator, and stacked fan added too much height, so engineers developed a vapor-chamber heatsink.
The chamber was only one part of the solution. It transferred heat to radiator fins, while a custom centrifugal fan assembly, ducts, and propellers moved air through and out of the console. Microsoft says its team used empirical models to refine the fan design and identify component hotspots. The example shows why packaging and the complete airflow path matter; it does not establish that a chamber would outperform pipes in an otherwise identical console.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Microsoft’s account is useful because it explains a design constraint rather than simply naming a component. The first approach was rejected because it added too much height in the context of the console’s intended compact form. Engineers then developed the chamber as part of a broader assembly, with fins and a custom air-moving system. The choice therefore reflects a product-specific packaging and cooling problem, not a universal conclusion that vapor chambers are superior for all consoles.
Leonardo Del Castillo, GM of Xbox Devices Console Development, summarized the decision this way: “We got innovative and looked at other tech we could use and created a vapor chamber heat sink, like what you’d find in high-end PCs and graphic cards, and we believe this is the first time it’s being used in a consumer electronic.” The statement documents Microsoft’s view of the Xbox One X design at the time; it is not a comparative test against a heat-pipe version of the same console.
PS5 Pro: heat pipes beside the SoC
In Sony Interactive Entertainment’s April 21, 2025 PS5 Pro teardown, mechanical design lead Shinya Tsuchida identifies copper heat pipes beside the system-on-a-chip (SoC) and aluminum heatsink fins divided into two sections. Sony says the Pro has more heat pipes because it needs a more powerful heatsink, and notes that placement affects cooling capability.

The material and placement details help explain what the teardown does establish: the PS5 Pro uses copper heat pipes adjacent to its SoC, and those pipes work with aluminum fins in the heatsink. Sony’s explanation that the Pro has more pipes because it needs a more powerful heatsink is a design rationale for this product. It does not quantify a temperature advantage over another console or show that a pipe arrangement would beat a chamber in the same chassis.

Sony’s original PS5 design story also discusses the role of a large fan and optimized airflow channels in managing heat and reducing distracting noise. That context matters: the presence of heat pipes alone does not explain a console’s temperatures or noise.
The Xbox One X and PS5 Pro are different products, generations, and cooling assemblies. Their official design accounts demonstrate that both approaches are used in consoles; they are not a head-to-head test. No cited controlled console-to-console comparison establishes a temperature, noise, or sustained-performance advantage for either method. The examples show two engineering choices made within different hardware and packaging requirements—not a test in which one device was substituted for the other under the same conditions.

If a comparison claims that one method “cools better,” look for measurements of the complete consoles under comparable conditions. The transport component is just one link in the thermal path, so a product name or teardown photo cannot by itself establish system performance.
- Temperature under load: Check that the same workload, measurement locations, ambient conditions, and test duration are used.
- Fan noise: A cooler result may come with a different fan speed or noise level; temperature alone does not describe the trade-off.
- Sustained performance: Look for evidence that performance is maintained over time, rather than inferred from the cooling component.
- Console constraints: Account for chassis size, component placement, and the fan-and-airflow design that carries heat out of the system.
Those checks help distinguish a meaningful system comparison from a claim based on one component. Comparable workloads and test duration matter because the cooling system operates as an assembly; ambient conditions and measurement locations matter when interpreting reported temperatures; and noise and sustained performance help describe trade-offs that a temperature figure alone may not capture. The cited manufacturer and technical sources do not provide a controlled comparison with named console temperature, noise, or performance statistics, so such figures should not be inferred from the examples.
It is also worth checking what a source actually says. A manufacturer’s explanation of why it selected a chamber or added heat pipes can establish that the part is used and give context for the design. A teardown can show component placement and materials. Neither, by itself, measures how the product compares with a different console. For that, readers need comparable tests of complete systems rather than a general claim about one cooling technology.

Without comparable measurements, it is accurate to say that a chamber is shaped to spread heat broadly and pipes are shaped to route it—not that one is the universal console-cooling winner.
Can owners swap one cooling method for the other?
The sourced examples describe integrated console assemblies designed around their respective chassis, heat sources, fins, and airflow paths. They do not establish that owners can replace a heat pipe with a vapor chamber, or the reverse, as a practical upgrade. The sources do not identify a suitable aftermarket cooling product or support generic recommendations for external coolers or thermal compounds. The useful takeaway is about how manufacturers design console cooling, not a parts-swapping project.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which cooling method works better in consoles: a vapor chamber or a heat pipe?
Neither is the universal winner. A vapor chamber generally spreads heat across a broad plane, while a heat pipe routes heat along a tube. The better fit depends on the heat source, contact quality, layout, fins, fan, airflow, packaging, and manufacturing requirements.
Does a vapor chamber cool better than a heat pipe?
AMD says vapor chambers generally spread heat across a larger area than heat pipes. That is a statement about their geometry and general engineering use, not proof that a chamber delivers lower temperatures in every console. A controlled comparison of complete systems would be needed to establish that.
Which consoles use these cooling designs?
Microsoft’s Xbox One X account describes a vapor-chamber heatsink. Sony’s PS5 Pro teardown describes copper heat pipes next to the SoC and aluminum fins. These official examples show both approaches in consoles, but they are different products rather than matched test systems.
Are the Xbox One X and PS5 Pro examples a head-to-head test?
No. They are different consoles, generations, and cooling assemblies. The cited sources explain design choices, but do not establish a comparative advantage in temperature, noise, or sustained performance.
Can I replace my console’s heat pipe with a vapor chamber, or add an external cooler?
The cited sources describe integrated assemblies designed around each console’s components, fins, chassis, and airflow. They do not establish that this kind of swap is practical or recommend a suitable aftermarket cooler, so they do not support a generic upgrade recommendation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I look for in a claim that one console cooling design is better?
Look for comparable tests of complete systems: the same workload, measurement locations, ambient conditions, and test duration, along with temperature under load, fan noise, and evidence of sustained performance. A teardown photo or the name of a cooling component alone cannot answer the question.
The Bottom Line
Vapor chambers and heat pipes share a two-phase heat-transfer principle but suit different shapes of cooling problem: chambers generally spread heat across a broad plane, while pipes route it along a tube. Xbox One X and PS5 Pro show that both have a place in console design, not that one wins a head-to-head test. Judge cooling by the complete system—contact, fins, fan, airflow, packaging, temperature, noise, and sustained performance—not by the transport component alone.
