For a small private Vault Hunters 3rd Edition server, plan on about 8 GB of RAM for two to four players, then add roughly 2 GB for each additional player online at the same time. Three players therefore needs about 10 GB under the common planning rule, while a five-to-10-player server is often assigned around 12 GB by hosting guides.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The official guidance is not perfectly consistent. The Vault Hunters Official Wiki lists 6 GB plus 2 GB per concurrent player as a minimum and 8 GB plus 2 GB per player as its recommended formula. The official how-to-play page instead says 4 GB plus 2 GB for every simultaneous player. Both formulas put three players near 10–12 GB, but the wiki figure is the safer basis for a dedicated server.

Quick RAM guide by player count
Use the following as a planning starting point for Vault Hunters 3rd Edition. “Concurrent players” means players connected at the same time, not the total number of people on a whitelist.
| Concurrent players | Official wiki minimum | Official wiki recommendation | Practical planning guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8 GB | 10 GB | 6–8 GB may work for a lightly used private world |
| 2 | 10 GB | 12 GB | About 8 GB is commonly targeted for a small private server, but the wiki formula is more conservative |
| 3 | 12 GB | 14 GB | About 10 GB under the official site’s rule; 10–12 GB is a safer real-world range |
| 4 | 14 GB | 16 GB | 8 GB is frequently quoted by community setup guides, while 12–16 GB gives more headroom |
| 5–10 | 16–26 GB | 18–28 GB | Many hosting tables quote about 12 GB, but official per-player formulas call for substantially more |
| 10 | 26 GB | 28 GB | Use roughly 26–28 GB if all 10 players may be online together |
The table exposes an important distinction: community hosting recommendations are often lower than the official wiki calculation. A server can run below the formula in a quiet world, but that is not the same as having enough capacity for exploration, several active vaults and sustained peak usage.

What the official Vault Hunters requirements say
Official wiki formula
The Server Install page on the Vault Hunters Official Wiki gives two formulas:
- Minimum: 6 GB base memory plus 2 GB for every concurrent player.
- Recommended: 8 GB base memory plus 2 GB for every concurrent player.
Under that guidance, three simultaneous players require 12 GB at minimum and 14 GB as the recommended allocation. The formula is deliberately conservative and is the best starting point when you are buying or renting a machine for predictable performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOfficial how-to-play rule
The official how-to-play page uses a lower base: 4 GB plus 2 GB for every player who will be online at the same time. Its example of three players equals 10 GB. The same page warns that you need additional memory when the server and your game client run on the same computer.
These pages are not necessarily describing identical operating conditions. The 4 GB rule is a simple general guideline, while the wiki’s 6–8 GB base leaves more room for mod overhead, world activity and temporary vault allocation. If the two sources disagree, use the wiki’s higher figure for capacity planning and treat the lower number as an optimistic floor.

The installation page’s Forge and manual-install sections are marked as unfinished, and its reference to version 3.18.3 in the CurseForge files tab may no longer match the newest pack release. Vault Hunters changes between editions and versions, so check the current server package and its bundled instructions before installing. Do not assume that a command written for an older 3rd Edition build applies unchanged to a later release.

Player count is only the base load
Every connected player adds more than a login slot. Exploration loads chunks, entities and block data; combat creates additional activity; and several players moving in different directions can keep more of the world active at once. A server that is stable for four players standing in one base may struggle when those same players split up and generate new terrain.
Active vaults create temporary spikes
A Space-Node hardware guide estimates that each active vault can add approximately 1–2 GB of temporary memory use. That is why a server may appear healthy during normal overworld play and then run out of memory when several players enter vaults together. The same guide recommends limiting simultaneous vaults to roughly three or four when the machine has less than 12 GB available.
Vault concurrency matters more than the number of people on your community’s roster. If eight people are registered but only three ever play together, size for three players. If five players routinely enter vaults at the same time, size for that peak rather than the weekly average.
Different guides measure different assumptions
Third-party hosting and hardware guides are not official pack requirements, and their numbers conflict:

Some providers publish 6–8 GB as their production-based recommendation, explicitly saying it is not a pack-author minimum. A fan FAQ lists 6 GB as a minimum and 7 GB or more for hosting friends or a public server. These figures are useful as lower-cost starting points, but they should not override the official formulas when you need reliable peak capacity.
How much RAM should you allocate for common server sizes?
Two to four private players
For a small group, start around 8 GB only if you accept limited headroom and moderate vault concurrency. A 10–12 GB allocation is more comfortable when players explore separately or run vaults together. The official wiki’s arithmetic is higher still: 14–16 GB recommended for three to four players.
Five to 10 players
Community tables often advertise 12 GB for this range, but the official wiki gives 18–28 GB recommended depending on whether five or 10 players are online concurrently. If 10 players are a genuine peak rather than a theoretical maximum, plan for about 28 GB under the wiki formula. Choosing 12 GB in that situation may work only with restrained activity and few simultaneous vaults.
More than 10 players
Apply the formula rather than relying on a single hosting tier. For example, 15 concurrent players equals 36 GB minimum and 38 GB recommended under the wiki’s equations. At this scale, test your actual modpack build, monitor memory and tick time, and consider splitting peak activity across more than one server if your design permits it.

Self-hosting versus a managed server
On a dedicated machine, the full RAM figure can be assigned to the Java process while the operating system retains the remainder. On a desktop that is also running the game, voice chat, a browser and other applications, the server allocation competes with the client. The official site specifically says to add memory for this arrangement and recommends allocating at least 8192 MB to the game client in the launcher.

Managed hosts often sell fixed memory tiers and publish simplified bands such as 8 GB, 10 GB or 12 GB. Those tiers may be based on typical usage rather than the official per-player formula. Ask whether the advertised amount is dedicated heap memory, whether the host permits changing Java flags, and whether backups or monitoring consume resources on the same container.
CPU, disk and network requirements
CPU speed affects TPS
More RAM cannot fix a slow game loop. Minecraft’s main simulation loop is largely single-threaded, and Prism Nodes notes that single-core clock speed sets the practical tick-per-second ceiling. A fast modern core can therefore matter as much as adding several gigabytes of memory. If players report delayed block updates, mobs freezing or rubber-banding while memory remains available, investigate CPU saturation and server tick time.
Disk performance and free space
The wiki calls for at least 5 GB of free disk space, but that is a floor for the documented installation rather than a complete lifetime budget. World data, logs, backups and crash reports grow over time. Leave additional capacity, use reliable storage, and keep backups outside the live world directory so a full disk does not stop the server from saving.

Bandwidth requirements depend on view distance, world activity and the number of players exploring new terrain. A wired connection and stable upload latency are more important than a high headline download speed for a self-hosted private server. If players disconnect during heavy exploration but the server console is healthy, check upstream stability and firewall or port-forwarding configuration.

-Xms8G -Xmx8G
Set -Xms and -Xmx to the same value so Java does not repeatedly resize the heap during play. Replace 8G with the allocation appropriate to your machine. These flags are tuning examples, not additional official requirements.
Leave room for the operating system
Do not assign every gigabyte of physical RAM to Java. The operating system, file cache, launch scripts, monitoring tools and the game client (when co-hosted) all need memory. If the machine begins swapping, performance can collapse even though the Java heap number looks sufficient.

Change one variable at a time
- Record the current heap allocation and player count.
- Observe memory use while players are in the overworld and while vaults are active.
- Increase the heap only when the process is actually constrained and physical RAM remains available.
- If memory is available but ticks are slow, profile CPU and loaded entities instead of blindly adding RAM.
- Restart after changing Java flags and confirm the startup log reports the intended maximum heap.
Symptoms of too little RAM and what to do
Out-of-memory crashes
Raise the allocation only if the host has unused physical memory. Also reduce simultaneous vaults, close other applications and verify that the Java version matches the server package. If the machine cannot provide the required headroom, move the server to a larger host rather than forcing an oversized heap onto a small system.
Severe lag when entering vaults
Compare performance with zero, one and several concurrent vaults. A sharp decline as vaults open is consistent with the estimated 1–2 GB temporary cost per active vault. Schedule vault runs so fewer players enter at once or upgrade memory before increasing the player cap.
Lag despite plenty of free memory
Check single-core CPU utilization, tick-time reports, entity counts and chunk-generation activity. RAM is not a substitute for CPU throughput, fast storage or a stable network path.
A practical sizing decision
Choose the highest number of players you expect online together, then add the number of simultaneous vaults you want to support. Use the official wiki’s 6 GB minimum or 8 GB recommended base plus 2 GB per concurrent player as the conservative calculation. Compare that result with your machine’s total physical RAM, subtracting room for the operating system and any game client. If the result is unaffordable, reduce peak concurrency or vault concurrency rather than treating a lower allocation as guaranteed.
For most small private groups, that means budgeting 10–12 GB for three players, 12–16 GB for four players, and substantially more when five or more players routinely connect or enter vaults together. Verify the pack version before installation because requirements and server files can change between editions and releases.
