vaultcli.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by the Credential Vault and Credential Manager infrastructure, not a normal game or runtime download. If Windows says it is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first and identify the program that called it instead of copying a replacement DLL into a system folder.
What this file actually does
vaultcli.dll is associated with the Windows Credential Vault Client Library. Windows Credential Manager stores saved credentials in the secure Windows Vault, while Windows applications can use Credential Locker and the PasswordVault APIs to access credentials. Microsoft documents these systems through its pages on Windows Credential Manager and Vault, Credential Locker, and PasswordVault.
It is a native Windows DLL. It is not a .NET assembly, Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX package, or universal add-on that you should download separately.
On a normal installation, look for it here:
C:WindowsSystem32vaultcli.dllC:WindowsSysWOW64vaultcli.dllon 64-bit Windows
The folder names are confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains the 64-bit system binaries used by 64-bit processes, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries used by 32-bit processes. Do not choose a file based only on its folder name. Check which executable reported the error.

Historical file indexes show Windows 10-era versions such as 10.0.14393.0, 10.0.10586.162, and 10.0.10586.0, but those are not universal current versions. The correct version, size, architecture, and hash depend on your Windows build, edition, servicing level, and architecture.
Cause-by-symptom guide
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Several programs or Windows features fail | Corrupted or missing Windows component | Run Windows Update, then DISM and SFC |
| Only one game or application fails | Damaged application files or a missing dependency | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The problem started after an antivirus detection | Quarantine or removal | Review Protection History and verify the file |
| The error began after manually copying a DLL | Wrong architecture, version mismatch, or tampering | Remove the replacement and repair Windows |
| The message says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency may be missing, not necessarily vaultcli.dll |
Identify the calling executable and its dependencies |
| The file appears beside a game executable | Suspicious private copy or DLL search-order issue | Check its signature and scan the system |
| Windows updates or upgrades recently failed | Incomplete servicing or damaged component store | Run DISM and SFC, then consider an in-place repair |
Common messages include “The program can’t start because vaultcli.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because vaultcli.dll was not found,” and “There was a problem starting vaultcli.dll.” The wording varies between Windows and the application displaying the error.
Fix 1: Check the file path and the failing program
Before changing anything, find out whether the file is missing and which executable is trying to load it.
- Press Windows key, type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
where vaultcli.dll
- Check the expected Windows locations:
dir %windir%System32vaultcli.dll
dir %windir%SysWOW64vaultcli.dll
The second command can report that the path does not exist on a 32-bit Windows installation. That is normal.
If where returns a copy in a game or application folder, do not assume it is legitimate. Right-click that file in File Explorer, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, and check whether it has a valid Microsoft signature. A copy beside an executable is unusual for this Windows component and can indicate a bad replacement or DLL search-order hijacking.
Also identify the executable named in the error, crash dialog, or Windows Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Record the Faulting application name, faulting module, and application path.
If the file is present in the correct Windows directory and only one program fails, skip ahead to the application repair section. If multiple programs fail, continue with Windows servicing.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending update can contain the matching system component or repair files needed by Windows servicing.

- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the affected application again.
If Windows Update fails, note the error and continue with DISM. Do not repeatedly retry an update while the component store is damaged.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the safest general repair when vaultcli.dll is missing, corrupt, incorrectly replaced, or failing across multiple programs. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which gives System File Checker a trustworthy source for restoring protected files. Microsoft documents this sequence in its guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage while servicing the component store.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC repaired files, restart before testing. If it says some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
When Windows Update cannot provide the required repair files, Microsoft documents using matching installation media as a source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to matching Windows installation files. The source must correspond closely to the installed Windows edition and build.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the issues behind the manual repair process; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct repair path for a damaged system DLL.
Fix 4: Repair the application that reports the error
If vaultcli.dll exists in the correct Windows directory and only one game or application fails, the application may have damaged files, a missing dependency, or a broken launcher configuration.
First check whether the program has a repair function:

- Restart the application and test it.
If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its developer’s official installer or launcher. Back up local saves, profiles, and configuration files first if the program stores them outside cloud synchronization.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity command before reinstalling the entire game. Do not copy vaultcli.dll into the game directory unless the developer explicitly supplies a private, signed copy as part of its own installer. A Windows system file in the wrong directory can create version conflicts and may be loaded before the protected Windows copy.
If the application installer also fails with a missing runtime message, install only the runtime named by the developer or installer. Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is responsible for vaultcli.dll.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined a file after detecting a suspicious replacement. A false positive is possible, but do not restore a DLL merely because an application stopped working.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
vaultcli.dll. - Check the full file path, detection name, and time of the action.
- Restore or allow the file only if it is in the normal Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft signature.
- If the path is an application folder, a temporary folder, or an unfamiliar directory, leave it quarantined.
- Run DISM and SFC instead.
Microsoft explains these decisions in its guide to Protection History. If the file repeatedly disappears, run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan or a reputable second-opinion scan. Malware or tampering becomes more likely when other system files are also changing, signatures are invalid, or the file returns outside System32 and SysWOW64.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the timing points to a driver
A driver update is not the normal solution for a missing credential DLL. It becomes relevant when the error began after a hardware change, a failed graphics or chipset update, a storage problem, or a Windows upgrade that left devices in an unstable state.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, Network adapters, and System devices.
- Right-click the device associated with the timing of the failure.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after installing a driver.
- If the issue began immediately after an update, open Properties → Driver and use Roll Back Driver, when available.
Avoid driver packages from unofficial download pages. Use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel, and do not replace vaultcli.dll as a substitute for repairing a driver.
Hunting through Device Manager and matching driver packages one by one is tedious when several devices are stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers need attention in its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace application reinstallation when one program is the actual cause.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the problem started immediately after a driver, application, cleanup operation, or update, System Restore can return system files and registry settings to an earlier state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if you want to review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can remove programs, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.

Fix 8: Perform an in-place Windows repair
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, use matching official Windows installation media and choose the option to keep personal files and applications. This refreshes Windows system files without the destructive result of a clean installation.
Use Microsoft’s official Windows 10 download page or Windows 11 download page. Start the setup from within Windows, confirm that the edition matches, and select Keep personal files and apps when that option is offered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBack up important files before starting. If setup does not offer the keep-apps option, stop and check the edition, language, architecture, and media source rather than proceeding with a clean install.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax in the regsvr32 command reference.
There is no evidence that vaultcli.dll should be registered manually. Running commands such as these can produce entry-point errors without repairing Windows:
regsvr32 vaultcli.dll
regsvr32 %windir%System32vaultcli.dll
Do not use regsvr32 as a general missing-DLL fix. DISM and SFC repair the Windows servicing state instead.

There is no legitimate universal “latest vaultcli.dll” download independent of the Windows build. A downloaded file can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, altered contents, or malware, and placing it in System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder can make the problem harder to diagnose.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, System Restore, or the affected application’s official installer. Microsoft-signed files in protected Windows directories are safer evidence than a filename obtained from an unknown source.

FAQ
Is vaultcli.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system component associated with Credential Vault, Credential Manager, Credential Locker, and Password Vault functionality.
Should I download vaultcli.dll?
No. Restore it through Windows servicing or official Windows installation media. Do not use a generic DLL download as the first repair.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Windows chooses the appropriate system component for the calling process. Manual copying can create architecture and servicing mismatches.
Does a missing message prove that the file itself is gone?
No. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by the DLL or the calling application is missing.
Is vaultcli.dll related to my game?
It may be loaded by an application or game that uses Windows credential APIs, but there is no reliable evidence connecting it to one particular title. Identify the failing executable before blaming the game.
Will deleting saved credentials repair it?
No. Credential Manager data is separate from the Windows DLL. Recreating credentials may help a sign-in problem, but it does not restore a missing or damaged system component.
What should I do if the error remains?
Record the exact message, failing executable, Windows version and build, returned DLL path, digital-signature result, and whether other applications fail. Then use an in-place Windows repair or contact the application developer if only that program is affected.
