- “The program can’t start because VB40032.DLL is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “This application failed to start because vb40032.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading vb40032.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because vb40032.dll was not found.”
- “vb40032.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording varies between Windows versions and applications, but the underlying problem is usually the same: an old program built with Visual Basic 4.0 cannot find the 32-bit runtime it needs.
The 60-second answer
vb40032.dll is the 32-bit Visual Basic 4.0 runtime library from Microsoft. It is genuine Microsoft software, but it is legacy application software, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system component.
The safest and most likely fix is to identify the application named in the error, then repair or reinstall that application using its original installer, installation disc, vendor runtime package, or game launcher repair feature. Do not download an isolated copy of vb40032.dll, place it in System32, or attempt to register it blindly.

The file is 32-bit, so it is commonly needed by an old 32-bit program even when that program is running on 64-bit Windows. A supposed 64-bit copy of vb40032.dll is a warning sign.
What is vb40032.dll
vb40032.dll is the Visual Basic 4.0 runtime library. Applications compiled with Visual Basic 4.0 can use it for common programming functions instead of including those functions inside the application itself.
Known file metadata identifies:
- Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Product: Visual Basic 4.0
- Internal name:
VB40032.DLL - Architecture: 32-bit
- Observed versions: 4.0.29.24 and 4.0.24.22
- Approximate file size: 0.69 MB
Those version details are observations from file catalogues, not an official Microsoft compatibility list. A Microsoft name or metadata entry also does not prove that every copy found online is authentic.
vb40032.dll is not the Visual C++ Redistributable, .NET Framework, DirectX, or Visual Basic 6 runtime. Installing one of those packages will not normally replace the Visual Basic 4.0 runtime required by your application.
Microsoft does not currently provide a verified, maintained standalone Visual Basic 4.0 runtime download page. The parent application’s installer is therefore the preferred source.
First identify the parent application
Do not start by searching for the DLL itself. Start with the executable that requests it.
Read the complete error carefully. Windows or the application’s launcher may name the program in the title bar or message. Then check the following locations:
- Open Start and search for the application.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Open file location.
- Right-click the shortcut again, select Properties, and check the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Check the application’s About page, Help menu, readme files, or original installation media for its version and publisher.
Common sources include old Visual Basic programs, check-printing software, CD-ROM applications, utilities, and older games. The exact program matters because its installer may include additional Visual Basic files, ActiveX controls, OCX files, or application-specific components.
Also ask what changed immediately before the error appeared:
- Did you uninstall another old program?
- Did antivirus software quarantine a file?
- Did a cleanup utility remove files?
- Did you move the program to another drive?
- Did you migrate it to a new computer?
- Did you reinstall Windows?
- Did a failed update or reinstall leave the application incomplete?
That history often identifies the cause faster than examining the missing filename.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the definitive fix when the application installation is incomplete or its runtime was removed.
Try Windows app repair
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair may restore missing application-local files without removing your settings. If there is no Repair option, or the error remains, continue with a full reinstall.
Reinstall from trusted original media
- Back up the application’s documents, saved games, templates, or configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Use the original disc, an installer saved from the software vendor, or a trusted vendor-provided runtime package.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Complete the installation without interrupting it.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the application from its normal shortcut.
If the program came from a game launcher, open the launcher and look for Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or a similar command. That process can restore files belonging to the game without requiring a separate DLL download.
If the application was copied manually from another PC, do not assume copying only vb40032.dll is sufficient. Reinstall the complete program so that its runtime files and configuration are restored together.
Check whether it worked
The repair succeeded if the original application opens without the vb40032.dll message. If a different DLL or OCX is then named, the first missing dependency may have been restored and the installation is now revealing another missing component. Reinstall the complete application again rather than downloading each reported file separately.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legacy runtime when it detects a suspicious installer, damaged file, or unusual behavior. Do not restore a file solely because its name is vb40032.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries related to the affected application’s folder.
- Expand an entry to see its filename, detection, and action.
- If the file came from a verified original installer and the application is trusted, follow Microsoft’s on-screen recovery option.
- If the source is unknown, leave the file quarantined.
- Reinstall the application from clean original media instead.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how these entries and actions work.
Restoring a quarantined file may not solve the problem if the installer is damaged or other runtime files are missing. In that situation, remove the incomplete installation and reinstall the full application.
Fix 3: Confirm the application and runtime architecture
vb40032.dll is a 32-bit file. An old 32-bit application can use it on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ 32-bit compatibility infrastructure.
Do not try to solve the error by finding a 64-bit replacement. A legitimate 64-bit variant of vb40032.dll is not expected. Do not rename another DLL to vb40032.dll, either.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To check whether Windows is 64-bit:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
A 64-bit version of Windows can normally run many 32-bit desktop applications. However, the age of the program may introduce other problems, including:
- A 16-bit installer that modern Windows cannot run
- Obsolete copy-protection software
- An old driver
- A missing OCX or ActiveX control
- A program that expects files in a fixed folder
- Permissions or write-access failures
If the error appeared after moving the program, reinstall it into its expected location. Application-local deployment from the original installer is safer than copying a DLL into a Windows system directory.
Fix 4: Run the application compatibility troubleshooter
Compatibility settings can help an old 32-bit application launch, although they cannot recreate missing files or guarantee that obsolete components will work.
- Right-click the application’s shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Follow the prompts and test the recommended settings.
- Apply the settings if the program launches successfully.
- Start the application again.
You can also enable Run this program as an administrator when the application genuinely requires access to a protected folder. Avoid enabling it permanently unless necessary.

If the installer itself will not run, try the compatibility settings on the installer executable. If the application requires obsolete drivers, copy protection, or unsupported system components, compatibility mode may not be enough.
For software that cannot operate reliably on modern Windows, use a supported update from the vendor or an appropriately isolated legacy Windows virtual machine. Keep that environment separate from sensitive files and avoid connecting obsolete software to untrusted networks.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when broader corruption is suspected
vb40032.dll is not normally a Windows component, so System File Checker will not generally recreate it. These commands are useful when Windows itself is damaged and other protected system files are also failing.
First, open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft’s System File Checker instructions cover this sequence. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They generally will not install a third-party Visual Basic 4.0 runtime that was removed by an application uninstall.
When manually hunting through Windows repair commands and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed becomes the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when reinstalling the affected application is the real fix.
Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
Windows updates are not a replacement for the Visual Basic 4.0 runtime, but keeping Windows current can resolve compatibility and system-component problems around older applications.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional update is offered.
- Test the affected application.
If the error began immediately after a Windows or software change, review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. System Restore may help when a recent change removed or altered the application’s installation, provided a suitable restore point exists.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal cause of a missing vb40032.dll message. Consider driver work only if the application also reports graphics, sound, printer, scanner, or hardware errors.
For Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Printers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open Properties > Driver and select Roll Back Driver, when available.
For a clean reinstall, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page, uninstall the device only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, restart, and install the correct driver for your Windows architecture.
Manually hunting through hardware vendors and guessing which of many drivers is stale can take time; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while installation is performed by the full version, but updating a driver will not replace the missing Visual Basic runtime when the old application is the actual cause.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading an isolated vb40032.dll from a random DLL website is not a reliable repair. The file may be:
- Modified or bundled with unwanted software
- The wrong version for the application
- The wrong architecture
- Missing required companion files
- Damaged or incomplete
- Placed in a folder the application does not search
A file that reports Microsoft metadata is not automatically authentic. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, the application folder, or another location unless the original application vendor explicitly documents that deployment.
The safe sources are:
- The application’s original installation disc
- A verified installer supplied by the software vendor
- A vendor-provided runtime package
- A game launcher’s built-in verification or repair process
- A supported replacement version of the application
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 vb40032.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A runtime library does not become usable merely because it is registered. A registration error does not prove that the file is missing or defective.
Use regsvr32 only if the application’s vendor specifically says that this particular build is a self-registering COM component and provides the correct command. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the complete application.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Record the following before contacting the software vendor:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The exact error text
- The executable named by the error
- The application’s installation path
- The application version
- Your Windows version and system type
- Where the installer came from
- Whether Windows Security quarantined anything
- Whether the error names another DLL or OCX
- Whether the program ever worked on this PC
A legacy application may need additional Visual Basic support files, ActiveX controls, OLE components, or application-specific files. If the original installer no longer works on modern Windows, ask the vendor whether an updated application, runtime package, or supported virtual-machine setup is available.
Frequently asked questions
Is vb40032.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
No. It is a legacy 32-bit Visual Basic 4.0 runtime used by applications. Current Windows installations should not be assumed to include it.
Is vb40032.dll safe?
The genuine file is Microsoft software, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is genuine. Use the application’s original installer or a verified vendor package rather than an isolated download.
Does Visual C++ Redistributable fix vb40032.dll?
No. Visual C++ Redistributable packages provide a different runtime. They should not be used as a substitute for the Visual Basic 4.0 runtime.
Will the 64-bit version of Windows run this file?
Usually, a 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit application and its 32-bit runtime. The application itself may still fail because of an obsolete installer, driver, control, or copy-protection component.
Should I place vb40032.dll in System32?
No. Do not copy it into a Windows system folder. Reinstall the application so the correct files are placed where that application expects them.
Can SFC restore vb40032.dll?
Usually not. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not substitutes for reinstalling a legacy third-party application runtime.
Why does the message say the DLL is not designed to run on Windows?
That wording can indicate a damaged file, wrong architecture, an invalid replacement, or another missing dependency. It does not by itself prove that the original Visual Basic runtime is unsupported. Reinstall the complete application and inspect the full error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I use compatibility mode?
It is worth trying after restoring the application from trusted media. Compatibility mode can help with some old programs, but it cannot guarantee that obsolete installers, drivers, copy protection, or missing components will work.
What if another DLL is named after I fix this one?
That usually means the application has additional missing or damaged dependencies. Reinstall the complete program or obtain its full runtime package instead of downloading each DLL separately.
