vba6mtrt.dll is a legacy 32-bit Microsoft component identified as MT Designer RT, associated with the MTDesigner Runtime Object Library. The safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the older application that needs it, not to download the DLL separately or copy it into Windows system folders.

This error can appear as:

  • “This application failed to start because vba6mtrt.dll was not found.”
  • “The program can’t start because vba6mtrt.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “A required component is missing: vba6mtrt.dll.”
  • “Error loading vba6mtrt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The file vba6mtrt.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “vba6mtrt.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”

The wording is useful, but it does not always mean that this file alone is missing. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by vba6mtrt.dll is unavailable.

Before you begin: identify the application

Do not start by searching Windows for a replacement DLL. First determine which program is requesting it.

Check the error window

The application name may appear in the title bar or in the first line of the message. Write it down exactly. If the message appears while opening a shortcut, right-click that shortcut, select Properties, and check the Target field.

The executable path may look similar to one of these:

C:Program FilesVendorApplicationapplication.exe
C:Program Files (x86)VendorApplicationapplication.exe

The folder and executable name are important. Repairing a different installation will not restore the copy being launched.

Check Installed apps

  1. Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
  2. Search for the program named in the error.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Look for Modify, Repair, or Advanced options.
  5. If the program is not listed, continue with the original installer or installation media.

You can also check the program’s shortcut:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Choose Open File Location.
  4. Note the folder containing the executable.

Check Event Viewer if the message is unclear

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand Windows Logs and select Application.
  5. Select an error recorded at the time the program failed.
  6. Read Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and the application path.

This may identify the executable even when the visible error dialog does not.

Fix 1: repair the application that needs the DLL

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

This is the most reliable fix because vba6mtrt.dll is not identified as a normal Windows system component. It may have been installed with an older engineering, design, business, manufacturing, or other specialist application that bundled a VBA-era runtime component.

Use the Windows repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options.
  7. Follow the repair wizard.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Launch the application again.

Some desktop programs do not expose a Windows repair button. In that case, open the application’s installation folder and look for a maintenance program named something like setup.exe, maintenance.exe, or uninstall.exe. Use only the installer that belongs to the application.

Reinstall from the original package

If repair is unavailable or does not work:

  1. Back up the application’s documents, templates, license files, and custom settings.
  2. Obtain the original installer, vendor-provided package, or trusted installation media.
  3. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Run the original installer as an administrator.
  6. Reboot after installation.
  7. Start the application from its newly installed shortcut.

Do not replace the DLL with one copied from another computer unless the software vendor specifically instructs you to restore a verified backup. Different releases can require different supporting files.

What success looks like

The application should open without the vba6mtrt.dll message. If a different missing DLL appears, record its exact name rather than repeatedly copying files. Several missing files usually indicate an incomplete installation, damaged installation media, or a missing application component.

Fix 2: reinstall the application’s VBA or common-components package

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

Some older applications install shared components separately from the main program. The installer may label the relevant feature:

  • VBA support
  • Common components
  • Core components
  • Runtime files
  • MTDesigner support
  • Application runtime
  • Shared components

Run the application’s original setup program again and choose Modify or Custom if offered. Enable the VBA, runtime, or common-components feature, then complete the installation and restart Windows.

Do not assume that installing the ordinary Visual Basic 6 runtime will restore this file. Microsoft’s supported VB6 runtime documentation does not list vba6mtrt.dll as a standard Windows-shipped runtime file, and the file is not confirmed as part of the normal Windows System32 installation.

Similarly, installing a Visual C++ Redistributable is not a targeted fix. vba6mtrt.dll is associated with the VBA/VB6-era toolchain, not identified as a Visual C++ runtime file. Office repair is also not guaranteed to restore a component installed by an unrelated application.

Fix 3: check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

If the application worked previously and then suddenly began reporting the missing file, Windows Security or another endpoint-security product may have quarantined it.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review detections recorded when the application stopped working.
  6. Expand any relevant detection.
  7. Check the original file path, detection name, and affected file.

Do not restore a file solely because its name is familiar. Confirm that the path belongs to the installed application and that the application itself came from trusted installation media.

The safer recovery method is normally to reinstall the application from its genuine installer. This restores the complete component set instead of restoring one isolated file. Microsoft explains the Protection History workflow in its Windows Security Protection History documentation.

If your security software continues to quarantine the file, stop and contact the application vendor or your security administrator. Do not create an exclusion until the installer and file have been verified.

Fix 4: check the file location and 32-bit architecture

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

vba6mtrt.dll is reported as a 32-bit component. Microsoft states that VB6 runtime files are 32-bit only and run through WOW64 on 64-bit versions of Windows.

That does not mean you should copy a 32-bit DLL into both Windows system directories. On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system binaries and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries, but application DLLs are often expected beside the application executable or in a private shared-runtime directory.

A known installation context places this type of component under a path similar to:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVBAVBA6

That path does not prove that every application uses it. The correct location depends on the installer and the parent program.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect likely locations:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Check the affected application’s installation folder.
  3. Check C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVBAVBA6.
  4. On 64-bit Windows, also check the application’s folder under C:Program Files (x86) if applicable.

You can search both program folders from PowerShell:

Get-ChildItem -Path "C:Program Files","C:Program Files (x86)" -Filter vba6mtrt.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

This may take several minutes. A result is useful only if the path belongs to the application that failed. Finding a copy elsewhere does not prove that it is the correct version.

Distinguish architecture errors from missing dependencies

A message saying the file is “not designed to run on Windows” may indicate a corrupted file, an incompatible binary, or the wrong architecture. A message saying “the specified module could not be found” may indicate a missing dependency.

In either case, reinstall the complete application package. Do not download another copy with the same filename and place it beside the executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s VB6 support policy explains the 32-bit-only status of the VB6 runtime and its operation on 64-bit Windows.

Fix 5: update Windows and restart

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A Windows update will not normally recreate a private application DLL, but updating is sensible if the failure began after an upgrade or if several programs are malfunctioning.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if the system does not immediately require it.
  6. Start the affected application again.

If the program still fails, return to the application repair steps. Microsoft supports the VB6 runtime on supported Windows versions where it ships, but individual legacy applications, controls, and bundled components remain the responsibility of their software vendors.

Fix 6: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

Use these commands when other Windows features are also failing, Windows has damaged system files, or the problem started after a failed update. They are not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns vba6mtrt.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command normally recreates a third-party application’s private DLL.

Microsoft documents these procedures in its Windows repair guidance and DISM repair documentation.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If only this application fails, focus on repairing the application rather than repeatedly running system scans.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through Windows repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair features require the full version.

Fix 7: check drivers only when the failure is broader

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A display, storage, or device-driver problem is not the usual cause of a missing application DLL. Consider drivers only if the application fails alongside device errors, graphics problems, crashes, or hardware warnings.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories with a warning icon.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Read the message under Device status.
  7. Select Driver to view the provider and installed driver details.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.

Do not remove a working device driver simply because vba6mtrt.dll is missing. If the application depends on a specialist hardware device, reinstall the application’s official device package after confirming compatibility.

Outbyte Driver Updater can save time when you are hunting through many devices and unsure which driver is stale; its free scan identifies reported driver issues, while driver installation through the product requires the full version.

Do not use regsvr32 by default

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer or DllInstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents this behavior in its regsvr32 command reference and DllRegisterServer documentation.

A runtime or helper library such as vba6mtrt.dll should not be registered merely because its name ends in .dll. Running this command:

regsvr32 vba6mtrt.dll

may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found, or it may accomplish nothing useful.

Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor’s official instructions specifically require it and identify the file as a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Otherwise, repair the application package.

Avoid random DLL downloads and manual copying

Downloading vba6mtrt.dll from an unverified DLL library is risky because the file may have:

  • the wrong version;
  • the wrong architecture;
  • missing dependencies;
  • altered or malicious content;
  • an unknown installation path;
  • no trustworthy signature or provenance.

Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also create new problems and does not repair the application’s installer records or supporting files.

Use these sources instead:

  • the application’s original installer;
  • a vendor-provided repair or runtime package;
  • trusted original installation media;
  • a verified backup or system image;
  • the application vendor’s support channel.

There is no current dedicated Microsoft download page verified specifically for vba6mtrt.dll. Microsoft’s official VB6 documentation is useful for understanding the 32-bit runtime, but it should not be treated as a standalone download source for this file.

Causes of the error

The most likely causes are:

Cause What usually fixes it
Incomplete or damaged application installation Repair or reinstall the parent application
Security software quarantine Review Protection History and reinstall from trusted media
Shared VBA component removed during cleanup or migration Reinstall the application’s common or runtime components
Wrong application path or multiple installations Repair the installation that the shortcut actually launches
Missing dependency Reinstall the complete package and inspect application logs
Incompatible or corrupted binary Restore the correct installer-provided 32-bit file
Broader Windows corruption Run DISM and SFC
Unsupported legacy application Recover original media, backup, or vendor support

A file with this name has a legitimate legacy-software association, but the filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Treat copies in a download folder, temporary directory, user profile, or unrelated executable folder as suspicious and scan them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error returns after a successful repair

Check whether more than one copy of the application exists:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Record the Target path.
  4. Compare it with the installation you repaired.
  5. Remove obsolete shortcuts or launch the repaired copy directly.

You can also locate an executable from Command Prompt when you know its name:

where application.exe

Replace application.exe with the actual executable name. If Windows finds multiple locations, the shortcut may be launching an older copy.

If the program works under one Windows account but not another, test it with a new local account. A per-user profile, permission, or application-data problem may be involved. Repair the affected profile or application settings rather than copying system DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling produces another missing DLL error

Record every filename in order. A sequence of missing files usually means that the legacy installation is incomplete or that the program depends on several optional components.

Then:

  1. Stop downloading individual DLLs.
  2. Confirm the application name and version from its installer or shortcut.
  3. Run the installer’s Repair or Modify option.
  4. Look for a separate runtime, core, VBA, or common-components package.
  5. Check the installer log if one is available.
  6. Contact the software vendor with the complete error sequence.

If the application is no longer supported, look for original installation media, a vendor archive, a complete system backup, or a working machine running the same application release. System Restore or an image backup may restore application files and registry state, but neither is guaranteed to repair one missing DLL. Back up current documents before attempting a rollback.

FAQ

Is vba6mtrt.dll part of Windows?

It is not identified as a standard Windows System32 component. Available evidence points toward an application-bundled or shared VBA installation.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

It is associated with a 32-bit VBA/VB6-era component. A 32-bit application can run it on 64-bit Windows through WOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual Basic 6?

Not as a first response. The VB6 IDE is not the same thing as the runtime component requested by an individual application, and installing the IDE does not guarantee that this DLL will be restored.

Should I install Office?

Office repair may help only if Office is confirmed to be the application that installed and uses the component. It is not a universal fix for this error.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

No, not without evidence that the affected application also needs a Visual C++ runtime. vba6mtrt.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime file.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Use the original application installer so the file is placed in the location expected by the correct application and architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix it?

Usually not. Use it only when the vendor specifically documents registration for this particular component.

When should I run SFC and DISM?

Run them when several Windows components are failing or Windows system corruption is suspected. They do not normally recreate an application’s private DLL.

What evidence should I send the vendor?

Provide the exact error text, application name and path, Windows edition and architecture, when the problem began, recent updates or security detections, the Protection History result, installer or application logs, and the sequence of any additional missing DLL messages. Do not send an isolated DLL from an unverified source as a proposed fix.
