Cannot find VBRUN300.DLL.Cannot find VBRUN300.DLL. Windows needs this file to run C:Project1.exe.Cannot find file C:Project1.exe (or one of its components). Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.- “The program can’t start because vbrun300.dll is missing from your computer.”

- “vbrun300.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
The executable path in the message depends on the application attempting to start.
The 60-second answer
vbrun300.dll is the Microsoft Visual Basic 3.0 runtime library. It is used by applications compiled with Visual Basic 3.0, and it is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file.
First, identify the application named in the error and repair or reinstall that application from its original installer. If the vendor confirms that it is a Visual Basic 3.0 program, the relevant historical Microsoft runtime package is VB3Run.exe. This is an old download path, so do not replace it with a random DLL download sites website.

The important compatibility check comes next. Visual Basic 3.0 software is from the 16-bit era. Microsoft states that 64-bit Windows does not support 16-bit Windows applications or components. Therefore, copying vbrun300.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 will not make the original program run directly on normal 64-bit Windows 11.
What is vbrun300.dll?
vbrun300.dll is a runtime engine for Microsoft Visual Basic 3.0. A Visual Basic application may contain its own program code but depend on this shared runtime for common functions. If the runtime is absent, damaged, incomplete, or unavailable to the operating system, the application can stop before its main window opens.
The file may also appear as VBRUN300.DLL or VBRun300.dll. Windows file names are generally case-insensitive, so these spellings refer to the same expected runtime name.
Microsoft’s historical Visual Basic documentation identified VB3Run.exe as a self-extracting package containing the runtime required by Visual Basic 3.0 applications. The documented extracted runtime was approximately 389 KB. Microsoft also documented a later corrected build identified as version 03.00.0538.
This is not a modern Windows component supplied through Windows Update. It is also not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX file, .NET component, or ordinary device driver.
Is vbrun300.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Do not rely on file-indexing pages that label this file as “64-bit” or report version 0.0.0.0. Those descriptions do not establish the binary’s real compatibility.
vbrun300.dll belongs to 16-bit-era Visual Basic software. It should not be described as a 64-bit DLL. Microsoft explains that:
- 64-bit Windows cannot run 16-bit Windows applications or components.
- NTVDM supports 16-bit applications only on x86 versions of Windows.
- x64 and ARM versions of Windows do not provide that direct 16-bit support.
You can check your Windows architecture before spending time replacing the file:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
If it says 64-bit operating system, the original Visual Basic 3.0 executable may be fundamentally incompatible. If it says ARM-based processor, the same warning applies. A 32-bit operating system on an x86 processor has a better chance of running the original program, although other dependencies may still be missing.
Compatibility mode does not convert 16-bit software into a 64-bit application. It can adjust selected compatibility behaviors, but it cannot add processor support that Windows does not provide.
Why the error appears
The filename in the message identifies an expected dependency, not necessarily the complete cause. The most common possibilities are:

| Windows itself is damaged | Protected Windows components are corrupted | Use DISM and SFC as secondary repairs |
A newer launcher or installer can also report vbrun300.dll while depending on a legacy helper component. Do not assume that every application displaying this name is a pure Visual Basic 3.0 executable.

This is the safest and most likely repair because the application installer knows where its files belong and may install additional VBX controls or supporting libraries.
Find the program that is failing
Look at the full error message. The path may identify the executable, such as:
C:Program FilesOldAppOldApp.exe
You can also check:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select Storage.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the program by name.
If the error occurs when opening a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the path in Target.
- Use that application name when searching for the original installer or vendor package.

- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Locate the affected application.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Select Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if available.
- Complete the wizard and restart the application.
A successful repair usually restores the file alongside the program or in the location expected by its installer. If the same message returns, use the original installation media or vendor package to uninstall and reinstall the application.

Before uninstalling, back up the program’s data files and confirm that you still have its license information and installer.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete original package
Do not install only a replacement DLL if the application originally came with several files. Visual Basic 3.0 programs may require VBX controls, database components, configuration files, or vendor-specific libraries in addition to vbrun300.dll.
Use this sequence:
- Close the affected program.
- Back up its documents and saved data.
- Uninstall it through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or through Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator if the vendor instructs you to do so.
- Start the application from its installed shortcut.
- If another missing file is reported, record its full name rather than downloading it independently.
If the application has a launcher, use its Verify files, Repair, or Scan installation function before manually replacing anything.
If the program was removed immediately before the error appeared, reinstalling that program is more relevant than running Windows repair commands.
Fix 3: Use the historical Microsoft runtime only when appropriate
If the original application installer is unavailable and the vendor confirms a Visual Basic 3.0 dependency, Microsoft’s historical runtime package is the relevant source:
Download the historical Microsoft VB3Run.exe package
The download path is historical and its present availability should not be assumed. The original Microsoft documentation was written for older Windows versions, and its instruction to place the extracted DLL in a system directory should not be mechanically applied to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If you obtain a verified package:
- Save it to a folder you can identify.
- Scan it with Windows Security.
- Extract it according to the package instructions.
- Prefer the application’s own folder if the original installer expects the runtime beside the executable.
- Do not overwrite unrelated files in
C:WindowsSystem32. - Do not place it in
C:WindowsSysWOW64as a generic workaround. - Start the original program and note the exact result.
A restored runtime can solve a missing-file error on a compatible x86 system. It cannot overcome the 16-bit limitations of x64 or ARM Windows.

A legitimate old runtime can be quarantined because it is an uncommon legacy binary. That does not mean it is safe to restore every copy.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the result.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the detection involving
vbrun300.dll. - Check the file path, detection name, source, and application that installed it.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from a trusted, verified installer or the original Microsoft package.
If you restore a quarantined file without allowing it, Defender may detect and quarantine it again. If the source is unknown, leave the file quarantined and obtain a clean copy through the application vendor or original installation media.
A security warning should not be bypassed merely because the program is old.
Fix 5: Determine whether the program can run on this Windows installation
If the application itself is 16-bit, a missing runtime is only part of the problem.

On 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11
The original 16-bit Visual Basic 3.0 executable cannot run normally on x64 Windows. No placement of vbrun300.dll in System32, SysWOW64, the application directory, or the Windows search path changes that limitation.
Use one of these supported directions:
- Obtain a newer version from the software vendor.
- Ask the vendor whether a 32-bit or 64-bit replacement exists.
- Run the program inside a properly licensed, isolated older x86 Windows environment.
- Use a compatible emulator where appropriate and lawful for the software.
Do not treat compatibility mode as an architecture converter.

On 32-bit Windows 10
Microsoft documents NTVDM as the Windows feature used for 16-bit application support on x86 editions. To check whether the feature is available:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Look for NTVDM or a related 16-bit application support entry.
- Select it if present.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application again.
NTVDM is not available on x64 or ARM editions, and Microsoft recommends moving away from this obsolete technology. If the feature is not listed, do not try to copy it from another Windows installation.
Windows 11 normal editions should be treated as incompatible with the original VB3 executable when they are 64-bit, which is the usual configuration.
Fix 6: Replace a corrupted or incorrect historical build
A damaged extraction or incompatible historical build can cause messages such as “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error.”
Do not combine random copies from different websites. Instead:
- Remove the questionable copy from the application’s folder only after making a backup.
- Run the application’s repair option.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the original application.
- If the vendor confirms VB3 and provides a runtime package, use that package.
- Test the application before adding any other DLLs.
Microsoft documented a corrected Visual Basic 3 runtime build, version 03.00.0538, for a historical runtime problem. That does not mean every program should receive an arbitrary copy of that build. The application’s original package remains the best match.

Do not use regsvr32 for this runtime
regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is commonly relevant to certain COM and ActiveX components.
vbrun300.dll is a Visual Basic runtime library, not normally a self-registering ActiveX or COM component. Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 vbrun300.dll
It may produce an entry-point or module error and does not solve 16-bit incompatibility.
Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor specifically identifies a separate self-registering component and provides the correct command for that component.

Standalone DLL download sites sites are risky because the file may contain malware, be incomplete, come from an unknown build, or be the wrong binary type. Even a clean file may not fix the actual problem if the application also needs VBX controls or cannot run on 64-bit Windows.
Manual copying is reasonable only when all of these conditions apply:
- The file came from the original application installer or a verified Microsoft package.
- The application is known to be compatible with the operating system.
- The application vendor expects the runtime beside the executable.
- You preserve the application’s original directory structure.
Do not use System32 or `SysWOW64 as a general DLL repair location for this file.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only if Windows itself is damaged
vbrun300.dll is not a protected modern Windows system file. SFC and DISM are not expected to download or restore it. They are useful when Windows has broader corruption, such as broken system features, failing services, or multiple unrelated application errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. If both commands complete successfully but vbrun300.dll is still missing, return to the application installer and compatibility checks.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not manufacture a Visual Basic 3.0 runtime that was never part of Windows.
When manually hunting through system components and repeating SFC/DISM does not show what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected legacy application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the dependency.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the error names a driver
A graphics, printer, storage, or motherboard driver is not a normal provider of vbrun300.dll. Driver updates are relevant only if the same failure also names a driver-specific component or Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select Driver and then Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the problem began after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if available. Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not reinstall drivers merely because vbrun300.dll is missing. Fix 9: Use System Restore for a recent system change
System Restore may help if the problem began immediately after a software installation, uninstall, or system change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the affected application.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally restore personal documents, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point. Back up important data before proceeding.

What to do if the runtime repair does not work
Use the result to identify the real branch:
- The application works after repair: the installer had omitted, removed, or damaged the runtime.
- A different DLL or VBX is now missing: restore the complete original application package rather than collecting individual files.
- The same error remains on 64-bit Windows: the executable or one of its components is probably 16-bit and incompatible.
- The file exists but Windows says it is not designed to run: suspect an unsupported binary type, corruption, or a bad replacement copy.
- Windows Security blocks the file: verify its source before restoring it.
- The application opens but behaves incorrectly: contact the vendor or move it to an isolated compatible environment.
- The application is discontinued: preserve its data, identify its licensing requirements, and use a properly licensed older x86 environment rather than weakening modern Windows security.
Windows Update, Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET do not normally install vbrun300.dll. Install those components only if the application separately documents them as requirements.
FAQ
Is vbrun300.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a Microsoft Visual Basic 3.0 application runtime. It was used by legacy programs, but it is not a normal protected component of current Windows.
Can I download vbrun300.dll by itself?
Avoid random DLL download sites websites. Use the original application installer, the software vendor’s package, or the historical Microsoft VB3Run.exe package when the dependency has been confirmed.
Should I put vbrun300.dll in System32?
No, not as a general fix. The original runtime is from the 16-bit era, and System32 copying cannot make a 16-bit application run on 64-bit Windows.

Can Windows 11 run a Visual Basic 3.0 program?
Normal 64-bit Windows 11 cannot directly run the original 16-bit executable. Look for an updated application or use a properly licensed isolated older x86 Windows environment.
Is antivirus software always wrong when it quarantines this file?
No. Old files can trigger detections, but an unknown copy should not be restored blindly. Verify the installer and source first.
